Well DS#3 is NOT pleased. We have to leave for his physical shortly. I asked if he had on clean underwear. He said yes - and then asked why? So I told him they'll be checking his "junk" (I use the real word cause that's the kind of mom I am) He's now appalled and already 4 shades of red. His brothers are teasing him mercilessly.

I made sure to tell him that at least I requested one of the male Doctors - our family doc is a female but there are 11 residents in their group right now. I've assured him I step out for the actual "checking" though a nurse will still be in the room. Yea, not a happy camper.

DS#1 & 2 have their appts next week.

As we're getting out of the car I assured him that I would not be in the room for that part of his exam. I also let him know that the Dr would talk to him about tobacco use, smoking, drugs and sex and that I would NOT be told what he said to the Dr - just in case he had any issues or anything to discuss.

He replied: So I can say YES to all of them?! and started laughing hysterically. (face palm) See what I have to deal with here? After his exam the Dr came out chuckling - apparently he told the Dr the same thing. Silly boy. He's never away from me for very long at this point in his life. I told him I was getting back at him by making them give him 3 shots (which he got) HA! Mess with mom will you!

When I came back in for his shots he looked at me and said "Hey I passed the exam"

All soap is made with lye. Castile is made with the majority if not all of the oils being Olive oil. I cheat if you want to call it that. Wood ash makes potash. Potash makes a soft soap. I use Sodium Hydroxide and use a mix of coconut, olive, palm, shea and soybean oils..

I don't really call it cheating even if someone is just melting castile pellets and pouring it in a mold--I just like to pretend to be snobby about some things because I have so little to be snobby about. And because I generally find snobs amusing

I grew up learning a lot of "pioneer ways," and when we made soap it generally started with the fire to make the ash. The first time I heard about someone using castile pellets to "make" soap I was actually surprised there was such a monkey. And the first time I heard about someone dissolving pre-packaged lye, I felt stupid for never having thought of it before...

Apparently you know something about making soap. I'm lucky if I can make a bowl of cereal.

Well, for starters you need to make sure your grain is not genetically altered, coz the GA stuff will really clog up a millstone...

Waiting 2 weeks for the ash to soak and then filtering it out is just a bit too much work for me So I use store bought lye and the rest I do myself. I do have some glycerin melt and pour stuff around somewhere but prefer formulating my own soap so I can control the outcome. What ever way a person does it, it's an art form all to itself

We use the real words too. I have never seen such a lovely (or funny) shade of red as the one my mother turned when she asked Rhianna if her pants were too tight and her (at the time) three-year-old grand-daughter turned to her with a look of utter disdain and proclaimed "No--my vulva itches."



Edit: I hope "vulva" is not so vulgar as to be offensive here. I will be glad to edit to obscure the word if it is...

I hear ya. 'Swhy I haven't made soap in 30 years. Though I may get around to trying the dissolving lye (or melting pellets) method soon for a craft night with the munchkin. When I was a kid, though, the wait time didn't seem so long--I had kid things to do to fill the time, as well as carding, spinning and dying wool, digging clay and making pottery, dipping or molding candles, etc.

the glycerin melt and pour stuff is probably the way you want to go. Working with Lye around kids is just a bit more dangerous than I would want to mess with. Even the adults I have sit at the island and don't move when I work with it.

That's what I was planning, if for no other reason than being able to embed things in it (she loves that kind of thing).

I don't think I'd trust my daughter or wife to be in the house if I was working with lye--my wife is "very clumsy" (in her words) and Rhianna has been known to trip over her own feet while standing still.
