Today's Darwin Award goes to my neighbor Robert (who insists on being called Robert).
I came home from Busch Gardens with a note on my door from Robert's wife Dagny. The note read "Magnus, please come to our house and help. Robert is going to get us all killed."...
I go in, change, get Ceridwen changed, and we both start walking down the street. As I get to their driveway I see the garage is open and Robert is squatted in front of the AC condenser and air handler inside. And *POP* there are sparks and a brief fireball. And Robert careens backwards into his car and Dagny screams and Ceridwen bursts into tears from the commotion.
Robert is a Plastic Surgeon. And a very wealthy man. Yet he insists on DIY for everything and to my knowledge has not done anything right. Ever.
After I get Dagny to tell me where the circuit breaker is and I confirm it has been tripped I go back out to check on Robert. Who is now using a screwdriver to separate out the melted mess of wires inside the AC block. Even Ceridwen realized this was a bad idea and is hiding behind the car bent over into an inverted V looking from under the car.
Robert is totally ignoring me and I'm not saying a word because I'm fairly sure he can't get anybody hurt at the moment. Then I notice a few things:
1) The safety switch that makes sure the panels are on before running the AC is taped into the on position.
2) It is awfully clean looking inside that panel and everything is wet.
3) There is a squirt bottle, a toothbrush, and WD-40 sitting at Robert's side.
What was he trying to do?
REPLACE THE AIR FILTER THAT WAS THE BIG BOXY UNIT THAT SAID "AIR FLOW DIRECTION" OVER TO THE SIDE.
The bloody dolt didn't even know what the air filter was, bought some screen air filter from Target that was made for I think a small apartment sized unit, and came home to proceed to "fix" the AC. Brushing and cleaning WITH WATER AND WD-40!!!
On the upside Robert's wife is quite nice, engaging, and attractive. And she invites me over a lot when he is not home. Maybe she is already planning for his imminent death. *sigh* -Magnus
