You guys are both on deck, but not quite up to bat just yet.

I would love to see a billet or block of the Ti grade 5 side by side with a similar piece of 6061 or 7075 aluminum just to get a feel for the difference in color. Ever thought of using magnesium? Super light, strong enough in this format I would think. Personally I believe a block of clear polycarbonate would be awesome as well. That would be awesome for you Vapefest display

A few titanium facts I discovered: courtesy of Wikipedia:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanium_alloy

Generally, Ti-6Al-4V is used in applications up to 400 degrees Celsius. It has a density of roughly 4420 kg/m3, Young's modulus of 115 GPa, and tensile strength of 1000 MPa.[8] By comparison, annealed type 316 stainless steel has a density of 8000 kg/m3, modulus of 193 GPa, and tensile strength of only 570 MPa.[9] And tempered 6061 aluminium alloy has 2700 kg/m3, 69 GPa, and 310 MPa, respectively.[10]

Loosely translated: Ti grade 5 is half the weight of stainless by volume but almost double the weight of 6061 aluminum. The Reo is made of 6061 for comparisons sake. I need to look up a comparison between 7075 and Ti now.

Here's another great resource for just about any metal that would work..

I too would love to see the Ti and both grades of aluminum side by side. Magnesium definitely should be considered. Wonder what would be the result of anodizing it? ;)

You can't tell the difference in the aluminum unless your really familiar with it.If you are familiar with it you'll maybe notice that it's s but heavier fit it's size if you picked up a chunk of it but prolly not and only if you wet paying attention. If you had two pieces in front of you, one of each aluminum, you'd have to feel the weight of each of them to tell the difference, it looks the same. . . With the titanium you can tell it's not aluminum by looking at it but if your not familiar with titanium it would be hard to guess as to what it was. The titanium really shines when you anodize it. I'll see if I can get a video of the process, it's a trip, just when you think it's not going to do anything it pops and you get color; gold, purple, blue etc. It's hard to guess at and easy to screw up. . . When I start cutting up titanium I'll put some pics up with different colors on em. .
I'm gonna try to get some variation in the patterns on the flat bar a couple different ways, I'm not sure what's gonna work the best yet, maybe it won't work at all but I'm gonna find out.

Would TiNi coating be possible? The gold coating used on shock absorber shafts to stop stiction. I think that over bead blasted would look awesome. I'm not into heat treated titanium.

I can tell... The 7075 feels more dense and colder.

I suspect the one or two type batches would be prohibitively expensive.

I thought the tiger stripe was going to be a water transfer printing (aka hydrographics) place ;)

The engine turned or plate patterns would be cool

Or even a carbon fiber https://www.mydipkit.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2

And for some reason the thought of metal box with a burl wood grain is appealing

Maybe even stone? https://www.mydipkit.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=14

I used titanium stiffeners for years when flow soldering printed circuit boards. Hit with acid flux and 440+ degree solder bath and pressure wash for years. Never changed color, warp or change shape. Fiberglass was the only other material that could withstand the abuse.

I really dig that TiAIN coating but I'm still holding out for the blasted blue.

You never know though. Sounds like Tom might have some cool surfacing ideas.
