But I haven't verified yet if 18650 protected cells will fit though.

Most Protected 18650s will fit but the battery cap won't screw down all the way and there will be a gap due to the protection circuit adding a little length to the battery. Check out steeljan's video review of the LT if anyone wants to see it as she show it using a protected 18650.
