meter reads 1.5 so I guess I'm doing it right then
To be as accurate as possible move the plugs back and forth while touching the meter leads together. This cleans the oxidation from the plugs and jacks and allows you to get a repeatable reading when you measure. An auto-ranging voltmeter costs a little more, but is worth the one time cost down the road just in terms of accuracy and ease of use. If yours reads more than zero when you touch the leads together, just subtract the reading from the result you measure on the coil.
I use doubled 2mm silica rope on my Kanger
tanks because I need the thickness. Doubling makes the ends bow, so I just wrap 32 gauge Kanthal around the wick and then use an eye loupe to view the
coils and make sure I don't have shorts from loops that touch before installing it. It's not as neat as winding around a nail, but it works fine. 5 wraps around double 2mm silica rope is around 2.1 ohms after breaking off half inch ends once the silica plugs are installed. I start with a length that measures about 2.5 ohms to allow for break off loss.
If you have loops that touch, the resistance goes down. Too many
coils makes for higher resistance unless you reduce the gauge of the wire.
