I watched a review and the 2 coils that come with the kit used together (in parallel) is just under 4 0hms so I assume 1 of these coils would be around 7 ohms. How would this do at 30 watts? Most review using both coils were running at least 50 watts.
If 2 coils need at least 50w, then only one, should only require 25.

As I mentioned, my mod only has limited choices of wattage... nothing between 18 and 30. I did notice in the first review I watched, the guy installed the coils with one lead through top hole and the other lead through bottom hole (makes more sense because the leads tend to be offset anyway) all others just used both top holes/both bottom holes. It shouldn't matter, but looked like they just fit better (coil sits more level) I will do my homework and use "steam engine" to design coil builds (so not constantly asking questions) but one last thought: Assume 30-35 watts, what makes more sense... a single coil or 2 coils (total resistance similar)? I am going to use these as RDA (no tank) to test my juice flavors (changing wicks for each flavor)

I would try one coil at 30 watts. When you install it, try the 18 watts first. If 30 watts is too hot, but 18 too cool, then try the two coils at 30.
As far as coil placement in the holes, I guess that's up to you, one top and one bottom does make you have to manipulate them a little more. Ideally, you will have a small screwdriver or rod that you would put through the coil to keep it from deforming while you put it in.
I use one top and one bottom in velocity style decks because they are both placed exactly the same. Not a requirement.

@vaper1960 , you may find this article and video useful with your coils. It's from the owner Advanced Vape Supply. There are 2 videos on that page that are helpful. One is on getting long life out of your claptons and the other is on proper dry burning for ss316L coils. Plus some rather useful tips.
Stainless Steel Coil & Wire Instructions and Tips
He has a series of some pretty decent videos on YT.

AVS carries some really nice clapton wire you would probably like. I get all my wire from AVS, Lightning Vapes and TEMco. All offer high quality wire. TEMco is the lowest cost for spools of ss316L, kanthal etc (they don't carry clapton wire).

Good luck and happy building!!! ;)
Cheers

My first variable wattage mod was an Istick30. A friend gave me a Velocity clone with one .5 microcoil in it. Used it for a short time, then installed a second coil he gave me. These were .25 to .3 together, and I ran then at the full 30 watts I had available. It worked. These were single wire 24g Kanthal, so ramped up very quickly.

I'd say just the one coil for now:thumb:

Just to clarify... my question about one coil versus two was relating to my own coils that I will make, not the coils that came with the kit. So what I meant was one coil that would work at 30 watts or two coils that would work at 30 watts. Also, if you look at a coil from a sideview, one lead comes from the top of winds, the other lead from the bottom of winds, so it made sense to line up one lead with a top hole, the other with a bottom hole, and the opposite for the other coil (I know it's hard to visualize)

Yeah, dry burn at the 18

If you designed the 2 coils to work together at 30w, there should be no issue.

As for leads, top and bottom is easier to sit, esp. in dual coil setups in a two post vertical line the quad flex. Aligning the coil again after the set screws are tight.
    Dry burn, then tighten again.
Wick, then make sure they are still tight, then prime, and a final adjustment, mostly just wick, then pop the barrel on and enjoy the fruits (or custard In your case) of your labor.

Yes, that's what I meant. I already understand about straightening/aligning coils. The RDA comes with two tops... bottom airflow or top airflow. Any opinions on that? I don't need RDTA (with tank) for testing juices, but will play with that later. Not interested in "squonking" so don't bother bringing that up. Thanks again... you are always so much help.

Your loss on the squonk, but I kid...

If you're not squonking, and just using for flavor testing, bottom air will be best. The drawback is less capacity, and easily flooded air channel, both of which won't be an issue.

You may not even need to use a wick, if your coil can hold enough juice for a quick puff.

Oh, I get it now... top airflow in case you tilt it and juice might leak out. And yes, I actually considered not needing a wick, but will use one anyway (just doesn't need much extra hanging out of the coil)
Get some rayon, as it doesn't hold flavor after changing juice. It's 8$ or about on Amazon for 40 feet.

2.5 should be fine for ID, and the width seems good to me too, but be careful the coil doesn't contact the barrel
No worries, the "barrel" has a plastic insert (part of the aiflow adjustment) that prevents electrical contact. I'm playing with the quadflex kit right now... Love it! Also going to try the nautilus X tank.

I'd imagine contacting the plastic wouldn't be much better, imo. I didn't notice that on mine, I'll dig it out and play around with it a bit.

BTW, it's the barrel with bottom airflow.
Top air has that to, it seems.
