Cleaning the black gunk off may not make a difference....when I look at the evo coils they are wound so close to each other that they must have an insulation coating...and it might well be that it's that coating that has burnt off and they start getting colder as they gradually start shorting across the coils and the resistance gets less.

New information.

I have been reminded that there is a fairly significant level of phosphoric acid in cola. I knew this but didn't even consider it because, for some reason, I was tunnel-visioned on carbonic acid. Now...this particular acid is actually stronger than carbonic acid AND more adept at breaking up oils and biological materials so it's probably this that's doing the trick.

Also, I did some research on brands and have discovered that the strongest of all of the soda-pops is RC Cola with a pH of 2.39, then regular Pepsi, with a pH of 2.49 followed by Coke Classic with a pH of 2.63 (with pH 7 being neutral and sulfuric acid having a pH of .7 to .3 depending on concentration).

So.. RC looks like the do-er.

Thanks to Gravity_Tester for the heads up.

EDIT: Changed the winner to RC Cola.

Yeah...I'm going to get an ultrasonic cleaner, too.

Not sure what I'll use for cleaning fluid yet (it will have to be something relatively inert and I think the agitation of ultrasonic vibration would make cola go supernova) but I'll figure something out.

Yea Cola might make it go a lil crazy. There is different liquid you can get. I was thinking of using a liquid that is used for cleaning cell phones and other electronics in ultrasonic cleaners and then when its done just rinse it off with water and dry it. Im gonna google more info. What im not sure about is how high I should set the machine.

if phosphoric acid is the "cleaning power" of cola, it is something that can be found in bottles from garden shops or where fertilizer is sold.

Ok , I am going to drop one in with 2 denture cleaner tab's but not realy sure what to do after I take it out. Just flush with water ? Not sure of the next step ..

Yea I think rinsing it would do the job after.

I think I will be dropping a tablet of denture cleaner in with some water in a ultrasonic cleaner and then just rinse it and hope for the best :)

Yeah these tab's work on all kind's of stuff. Drop a few in the tolit and it clean's itself..and so on..
EDIT: I am just lost about heating it up afterward's.

I would think running it under some warm or slightly hot water would do the trick. how long do you think it would be good to leave it in the denture cleaner?

I know when cleaning dentures in a ultrasonic cleaner that after you run it in the denture solution you can run it again in just plain water to ultrasonic rinse it. But maybe Ill try it in the denture cleaner only first. Maybe I wont need the ultrasonic cleaner.

Terraphon,

I've got an rn4072 pen style atomizer soaking in a dixie cup of rc cola right now. It's ironic that rc cola has the highest phosphoric acid content, that's just what my roommate had in the fridge. The atomizer is almost totally clog, drag is really hard and even when it seems like i've gotten a good hit, barely any vapor.
I'll report back at 11 oclock after a 2 hour soak, and tell my findings.
