Well, it finally happened. Mrs E is home by herself until the kids get home from school. She called me a minute ago and said she was freaked out. Some lady in a Ford Expedition pulled in the driveway with three other people in it. Walked up to the door and knocked. She handed Mrs E a bottle of Dawn dish soap then asked if she could come in to vacuum one of our carpets (keep in mind carpet and rug are synonymous in the south). Anywho, Charli and Cocoa are both going NUTS trying to get through the door. And neither one of them are like that with most of our guests. Mrs E finally said "Look, I dont think you really WANT to come in here..." Then when she called, she said she was freaked out about it. One of the things being done with break ins around here was for on person to distract the homeowner while another person walked around to either a back or side door to gain entry into the house. I told her to lock the doors (which she had already done) and get the gun out of the safe and keep it within reach until I got home. Even when the kids came home, to leave it out, just tell them to not touch (after all, if its within her constant reach, they shouldnt be able to touch it without her knowing about it). She was going to put it away when they got home and I had to tell her "NO! If anything, thats all the more reason to have it out!"
So, after she gets it out, and I tell her its loaded, dont touch the trigger unless shes going to shoot someone, I realize that until today, shes never picked it up. She detests firearms. I mention taking her to the range at least once a week, but she always says no. I wasnt going to push her to do it. If shes nervous around them, making her do anything with it will only make it worse.
If we can get someone (hoping for my sis in law) to watch the kids for a couple of hours, Im taking her to the range this Saturday morning. Assuming, of course, that my range has target rounds in stock...
