I started smoking in 1959, in New York City, and the price of a pack was 13 cents.
My first car was a 1948 Buick Roadmaster straight eight which I purchased used for $40.00. Instead of power steering we used 'ARMSTRONG POWER". My first New car was a 1965 Pontiac Catalina with a 389 and gas was 23 cents a gallon. You could drive all day for $2.00.

My Mom had a Catalina - around the same year and if I remember right, it had a big 400 in it - I do know it ran like a scolded dog - for being such a big car. We used to sneak it out at night and burn rubber for miles - we were such bad kids back then. Those were fun days though - I have to admit.

In 1973, in San Antonio, they were 50 cents, I think. Gas was 33 cents a gallon.

My first car was a Pinto too. It was an old blue one with a blown transmission. Lucky I had a good friend who replaced it for me for 50 dollars.

I tell you what. That Pinto wasn't much of a looker - but in all honesty - it was a GREAT car. Can't remember exactly how much I sold it for - not much less than I bought it for - I went in the service 3 weeks after graduating high school in 72. There was another car that was basically the same car ( seems like it was called a Capri - cool looking car - way better looking than the pinto - but basically the same car, motor, tranny, etc... )

proimage1 that's so funny, my first car was a 1971 Pinto right out of the showroom, but was Blue with the larger engine, radio and automatic - cost $2300. I welll remember $2.50 a carton cigs and gas wars in the late 60's when regular was as low as 13.9 cents a gallon.

My first job was for .25 an hour when I was 12 working in the fields for the local canning company during the summer.

I was thinking again about your post - yep, had I gotten that bigger engine and a great luxury like an AM radio - it would have run around the same.

I had a best buddy that bought a brand new Toyota Corolla - paid $1600 but he paid cash for it. Heck, $1600 cash would have been something like a million to me back then ( and more or less that right now to by the way 8-o ) I also remember having the FIRST 8-track tape player in my car - the first in our high school - it got quite the crowd in the parking lot before school every day - geeeshh - I still a couple of working 8-track tape decks and a boatload of 8-track tapes - yep, I'm a throwback. I like all that old stuff )

About $1.50 a pack (California - which has it's own taxes besides the fed tax) back in 1984 or so. I quit for 8 years, then picked it up again in 2000 for about 3.75 a pack... and that only lasted a couple years. Now it's approximately $6.00 a pack, which is what inspired me (along with my almost-religious-convert friends) to try this concept out. ;)

In the early 90's premiums were about a $1.20 and generics were as low as 89 cents a pack. I was a broke college student so it was mostly Basics with the occasional treat of Camels before I graduated with a full time job and fulltime Camels. One of my main motivations for quitting (over a week ago!) was how expensive they had gotten. $5.40 for a pack of Camels. outrageous. Luckily about a year ago I had cut back to a ultra lights after a failed Zyban attempt which I am measure made the vaping transition much easier.

Strangely, e-cigs are a freaking miracle for me. I had tried everthing to quit from patches to Zyban and it never took but with ecigs I could care less about smoking. And vaping is just great fun experimenting with different flavors.

When I first started cigs were about .65 per pack. I remember saying that when cigarettes reached 1.00 a pack I was quitting. When we were low on cash we used to buy Winchesters. Little cigarette sized cigars that tasted like crap, but they were only 25 cents for a pack of 20. I also remember there were certain stores that sold 'loosies' (single cigs from a pack) for .05 each.

LOL, thats kind of funny. My first car was a 74 Pontiac Grand Ville 455 ci with a turbo 400 tranny. It was the only thing I could afford when I was 16. I wanted to make it look cool, so I went to the junk yard and got some truck springs for it that lifted the rear end about 12" and the front about 8". Got some L-60-15's on the back and some G-60-15's on the front, (i wanted to put some M-50-15's on it but could not fit them without some major wheel well mods), then went burning rubber everywhere. Those cars were gigantic compared to cars these days. I don't remember just how long it was, but I would guess that they were about the length of an Escalade, or pretty close to that.

1983 in Scottsdale Arizona my friends and I would buy smokes from our local Mobil station on the way to school. When the attendants weren't looking We would buy them quickly from the vending machines for $.90 a pack. We were only 13 years old so we got chased off from time to time. Back then I think they were only like $.75-$.80 in the stores. Ahhhhh the good old days.

32 cents a pack!!! I remember when everyone flipped out when they went up to 65 cents a pack. All I heard was "robbery", "time to quit". Everyone bought a Laredo machine and rolled their own...haha. NY wants another buck a pack these f@#ckin crooks. Glad I'm vaping now, that's all I can say. We used to get them in the machine at the POLICE STATION "for our mom"
