Smoking is fairly cheap here in California. Top priced brands are still in the mid $4 range per pack.

I was spending a good $225 for Camel Blue 99s every month.

vaping my DIY juice + the overhead for vaping gear (+trial & error costs) is 10-20% of the smoking cost I used to pay.

As a cost-effective measure, the choice for vaping is a no-brainer. If you can't resist the impulse to buy stupid gadgets then vaping can put you into the hole pretty quick.

HAHA! I have this problem between me and my wife with Anything that costs money!
Especially if it is a matter of what she spends as opposed to what I spend... LOL!

I can honestly say that Vaping has significantly cost me less.
Even though the average pack of cigarettes around me costs $3.00 to $4.50, I was
spending much less because, for at least the last 10 years, I was making my own with filter
tubes and bulk tobacco. Doing it that way, I was spending around $12.00 a week = about
1 carton because there are 200 tubes per box and I would only have about 15/20 cigarettes
worth of tobacco left but it couldn't be used because it will turn to a powder by that time
due to settling and exposing it to air to often. So I was also throwing away the equivalent
of about $3.00 would it have been ready made.
Also, there was recently a huge markup in taxes on ANY kind of cigarette making machine.
Even though I had a small plastic one that originally cost me $4.50... the same ones now are
over $9.00, and they break so I had to buy a new one a couple years ago.

Even at that low of a cost, I am still saving money because I was smoking about 1 1/2 packs
a day. With Vaping, I am using about 15ml per week which is only around $8.00 - so I am still
saving about $4.00 a week.

I really don't count the hardware because it can pay for itself if used and cared for properly.
Also, with the hardware, I sort of consider that part a Hobby because it allows you to learn
about how it all works and lets you "Try new things" in the same area of enjoyment. It is also
sort of a collection of gadgets that is pretty cool to look at (especially my etched Dragon
Battery, oh and the 400mah black battery with the Clear Blue Vision CE4 on it) :)
I am going to get a nice looking Drip Tip Atty soon so I can have something to test flavors in.

So... if one eGo Battery costs $15.00 to $20.00 and can last 6 months to a year - that is a drop
in the bucket compared to most things.

I think I have about $95.00 in hardware right now and it has only been 22 days.

My Hardware consists of:
Starter eGo CE4 Kit = $34.00
Extra 400Mah Battery = $18.00
1 Vision 2/3 Clearomizer = $10.00
1 Vision 2/3 Blue Clearomizer (on sale) = $6.00
3 Replacement heads @ $2.50 ea = $7.50
1 eGo Hard Shell Zip case = $14.00
1 AC to DC USB Wall Adapter = $4.50
Total = $94.00

22 days x 1 pk per day = $66.00

So, in just a few days from now, it will have already paid for itself and will work well beyond
the cost of it.

The e-liquid is not included because that can be calculated as an avg at the end of a month
after the hardware pays for itself... and it will still be significantly less than using cigarettes.

The same could be said for any other hobby that requires "Consumable Items" - Painting,
Model Building, RC Vehicles, etc.
All hobbies require consumable items to make a keeper, which will eventually deplete over
time anyway. Paintings Yellow, Models break or fall apart, RC Vehicles require repair parts
and batteries, and the list goes on. :)

So... Shop Smart and cut costs where you can and it will most definitely save you money...
And best of all - Possibly save your Life!

The best way to look at it is:
Your Health is far more valuable than money, which it would cost a ton of if you have to be
hospitalized or go to a doctor for lung problems. One set of Chest X-Rays can cost $300.00
or more.
My Vaping may cost some money but Cancer Treatments or a funeral would cost WAY More
and now, you can't even get life insurance if you smoke!

The benefits of Vaping are Far more than the none you get from smoking :)

So... the cost is a minor sacrifice if it keeps you alive for her :)

The initial startup costs on buying a PV (multiple PVs... oooppppsss), tanks, tips, and a wide variety of juices to find your favorite is a bit high compared to just $5/day for a pack of smokes... But once you get settled down, you should just have e-juice and maintenance tank parts to replace... Look around at some of the signatures used here in the forums... Some just base your cost on the not smoking ciggies perspective but some, like the gotvapes one and a couple others actually let you formulate in the cost of the toys...

Of course, you could always go at it from the angle of not "smoking" and tell her you are not doing it to save money as much as you are trying to "provide HER with an ashtray taste free kissing experience"... :p

It also depends on where you live, most people running those signature banners can apparently buy smokes barely above free... Take the one a few posts above me for example, it says $110 saved 2840 analogs avoided, well here I would have saved ~$1400 instead of $110. Considering that and the price of PV hardware, it's understandable that some people can't see the savings involved!

Wow I guess I'm lucky to have a brick and mortar near home, so I can try before I buy.
I can see how it would add up quickly if I was shopping on the internet and buying to try.

I haven't had to trash a bottle of juice or bought a carto, atty, clearo that didn't work for me.
since January I've bought two Map tanks a boat load of cartomizers for the tank, 3 Kanga t2's, one vivi mini, one vivi nova, one kanga t3, probably 6 ego batteries and an itaste pen and maybe 100 bottles of e-juice. I think that amortizes out to maybe $20 or at the most $30 a week vs $14 or $16 a day.
I will add I never have more than two bottles of e-juice at home and I am going to buy a provari. but I will still be way under what I would have spent on fire based cigarettes!!!

In 4 months I have bought from about 15 vendors including direct from China Thru Alibaba and spent about $700. I've narrowed down what works for me except the batteries. Got 10 of those! I will save for and buy a mod type eventually. I think $75 a month will be my tops. Unless I start making my own juice. It all works out in the end unless you become a hobbyist. To each his own. I love love love ecf for help and see I would have bought a lot of stuff without reading on here what those things are about really. On the other hand I would never bother with the mod idea if it weren't for ecf either sooooooo

With three months vaping I have spent more than if I had kept smoking analogs. Lots of trial and error! Two hundred bucks a month on analogs! However, I started with a Blu starter kit, moved to Joyetech 510 Premium Kit and now am happy with my Ego Twists.
Both the Blu kit and the JT 510 have been loaned to friends to get them acquainted to e-cigs. One friend has converted to vaping and two people are still on the fence. So loaning these early modes of vaping has at least helped one person to quit analogs. I believe my loaners will get at least one more convert. I will then loan my early kits to more people. I could possibly help many people see the benefit of vaping as opposed to smoking. This leaves the cost of my initial purchase a none issue. I've done good - for myself and others! :)

Over time I expect my costs for my "entertainment" will decrease to about $50/month as opposed to $200. Steep learning curve but well worth it. Thank you ECF for your support!

Pay it forward! I live for that saying and I just might live a little longer too. :)

Yeah, I couldn't believe it when I saw one member say they paid about $15 per pack! - That
is Insane! I would just have to go nuts and stop cigarettes Cold if I had to pay that for cigarettes
and couldn't get some other means to replace them. - Get me a Straight Jacket Boys, I'm going
Cold Turkey!

I agree there... as I have said, the reason my avg savings is a bit higher is because I put the amount
of cigarettes I used as if I was buying by the pack all the time, which for me was 1 to 1/2 a day @ $3
avg.

But, since I had been using bulk tobacco and filter tubes and a small plastic machine that fills the tubes,
a carton of smokes was actually costing me an avg of $11.50 to $12.00 a week:
Rounded: The Tobacco = $8.00 and the Tubes = $3.00, then adding tax came to $11.50/$12.00.
I am still saving a little though even at only a savings of $4 a week... That could be a toy for my son, a
Rose for my wife, lunch for a day, etc. :)

I too have been pretty lucky I have not had much Error in my Trial. I have only had one juice that I cannot
use... but I will still use it if it is absolutely necessary. I was given an offer to have a different one added
to my next order to replace that one though.
I have only ordered from 2 online companies and have one local vender and I will most likely stay with them.
The online venders are very reasonably priced and I have found at least one juice I like from each, My local
vender is also good with some juices and some hardware but I don't really foresee me buying much hardware
now that I have what I really need and like. I am going to get a Drip Tip Atty for my eGo so I can try flavors on
occasion though.

Great Job! :toast:

I never really thought of doing that... I just might borrow that idea because I know a few people who I might
be able to introduce to a better way of life. I might just get a couple of the "cheapy" eGo type starter kits just
for that.

:)

i try to stay "breaking even" but i'm broke this month. so i've saved about $100 this month alone and have 2 months of juice on its way, and if i had to, i could also vape the 3 month supply of "oops" juices i have piled up. the other good thing is that this replaced my $100 per month online gaming "hobby" so in one month i could potentially save $250 if i don't buy anything new

At first, you will most likely spend as much, if not more, then you would on cigs. But when you do find what works for you and settle on a juice and setup, it will probably save you some cash. The first few months are expensive, because you are trying to learn and may be a bit obsessive about the new world you have entered, having to buy and try all the latest toys and juices. It becomes a hobby rather than a habit.
Now that I have found my flavors, my setup, and my mods, it is all about re-up on juice and cartos, maybe a new mod here and there...so maybe I am starting to save a little cash. And I don't smell like cigarettes...and I can breathe and taste food. To me, that is worth it.

well you gotta stop buying stuff.
You can only save money if you aren't buing mods and new / different clearomizers..
Right now I"m about about 50% or more savings now that I've got the equip that I need
4 heads = 10 bux (Probably last 1-2 months)
2-3 months juice - 20bux.
I was spending about 40-50 a month on smoking @ $10 a pack.
