I've visited Costa Rica twice since I started vaping. On both occasions I had many people ask me what I was using as none of them had ever seen an ecig before and were entirely clueless as to what I was using. It irritates me more then I can express to hear of a possible ban based again on misleading information :grr:

It's the power of lobbying money. Tobacco companies in many countries have a lot of power.

On a side note, there are some countries that have banned trans fats. In NYC, the mayor wanted to outlet sodas over 32 ounces.

All of this will inevitably lead to a speakeasy where I can vape, eat foods fried in trans fat, and drink Big Gulps.

Am I getting this straight: They are banning e-cigs because they believe that the FDA is lying about them being harmful?

This comment was about the FDA vs NJOY court case where the FDA did a study on E-cigarettes and found about the same amount of cancer causing chemicals in them as are in all of the patches, gums and other NRT products sold by Big Pharma. They then sent a press release out claiming that they caused cancer and it is still on their web site.

Rolygate has a post, http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/legislation-news/261778-fda-threads-everything-relevant-njoy-vs-fda-case.html, that leads to the threads on the case. It's worth reading through some of it to get history on the fight we are in with the FDA and BP.

My comment is awaiting moderation:

It’s bad enough that the Ministry of Health bought into the FDA’s partial truths, but it is even worse that they exaggerated what the FDA said! Let’s start with the exaggeration. The FDA did NOT state that electronic cigarettes “eject nicotine.” Their propaganda experts managed to make it sound as if the miniscule traces of some chemicals detected in the liquid would cause cancer or poison users. But a) the chemicals are not present in the vapor, and b) even if the same quantities were in the vapor, the amounts detected are not hazardous. For example, the “carcinogens” that FDA’s press release made such a big deal out of are present in FDA-approved nicotine patches and gum–in an equivalent quantity. If nicotine patches and gum don’t cause cancer, why would e-cigarettes do so? Two studies were published recently and, like the FDA, did not find harmful quantities of any chemical in the vapor. It’s interesting that Costa Rica would prefer that people continue inhaling all the toxins and carcinogens in cigarette smoke instead of switching to a low-risk alternative.
