Honestly...I wouldn't touch unprotected bats. The size difference is so small it makes no sense to take the risk. Protected bats aren't 100% safe but as long as you ensure there is no damage to the casing they are still infinitely safer than the unprotected.

I love unprotected batteries...but I think two unprotected batteries end to end to get greater than 3.7v is kinda playin roulette with your face. I've blown up several batteries back when i was tinkering frankenstein's monster flashlight mods, each and every time it was my fault...like the time i tried to run 5x q5 led emitters on a single 18650. That was the day i learned about the drill, and it's power to prevent detonation of aluminum tubes containing lithium ion batteries.

I've had CR2's short circuit and all they seem to do is get very hot and expand. Anyway, I thought protection didn't help with short circuits. Lifepo4 is the solution to this right?

From what I've read, it cuts the circuit if it detects a short.

If the battery shorts internally you're screwed!

Your mom said not to say...
Just to clear the record, Yes there are still CR2 batteries available on the market, I saw that someone had stated this and nobody bothered to correct that error. They are readily available from many places but I truly would not recommend that you use them. I got rid of my Magnum mod because of not wanting to use CR2 batts.

He was talking about protected RCR2's - Which you won't find for sale anywhere (unfortunately). :)

Does this only happen with mods running at 5v's or higher with unprotected batteries? Can this happen at 3.7v's?

It's a rare occurance but does have a greater chance of happening when vaping at higher voltages when using two (2) batteries stacked in series.

Less likely at 3.7V when using a single cell.
