Ya they are curious.. and love anything shiny. Growing up we made traps for them using shiny tin cans. They would refuse to let go of it..simply all they had to do. But if its shiny.. its theirs! But there are surprising clean like the Grammie sad above.. ive seen them take crawdads out of the creeks, shell it, then wash it before eating it. They are very interesting.

Michigan, yearning for home
When I was a little kid (3-4 years old) my grandparents had racoons that would come up onto their deck, and I would feed them bread out of my hand. It was always fun when I was little.

Then I grew up and found out how nasty they could be and thought "how in the world could they let me do that?"

Most people hate them, but thanks to my grandparents, I have a soft spot for 'em.

Actually, they "clean" their food because they don't produce saliva. The "cleaning" is how they get enough liquid to digest the food they eat. That's why you can't tell if a raccoon has rabies, because since they don't produce saliva, they don't foam at the mouth the way other rabid animals do.

I happen to really love raccoons. I know they can be very mean but that's their defense mechanism. I've often "run into" them on my front porch and when they see me they go running. I've never had a run-in with one but I know that they can be vicious when cornered or protecting their young. I would be too.

How interesting. Cool story son. Most people would not realize, but the OP is my son. Heck, I didnt realize it. We are
from Va, and he and his family are currently stationed in Cali. I had read this post earlier and didn't even put two and two together (I blame tapatalk) and even was going to post how I used to take my son coonhunting. Then he called and was telling this story to his mom! Wait a sec, I read that story today and checked the OPs username and sure enough...

Now gotta figure out how to friend him via tapatalk :D

okay. that was funny.

I would have enjoyed watching that just as much as your neighbors did. Too bad they didnt video tape it. lol

I asked the neighbors if they happened to video tape it, and unfortunately they didn't. They didn't realize he stole my PV though. They were asking me what that poor little raccoon did to me. HA! poor raccoon..

Don't be so sure. Looks like someone is releasing stills from the video already. :D (Checking YouTube in another browser window as I type...)

under the blue sky
Realizing he dropped his new shiny object, he turned to face me. So here I am facing off to the death with some malevolent raccoon. .

I feel for you. Raccoons and crows just can't be trusted.

My advice - Connibear 220 + Square 5 gal bucket + a mixture of Clam juice and Cat Food. Search "bucket set for raccoon" on youtube.
