That's a great story gpeake13j!
My wife and I used to do a lot of camping and there were always a lot of critters around. One night we were roasting hot dogs on spits over the fire and I dropped a piece of one at the edge of the fire close to my foot. I left it there thinking it would just burn up and be gone by morning. It was cold out and I was wearing winter gear including jeans, long johns and boots. Well, about an hour later after my wife had gone to bed this raccoon came out of the bushes and slowly made his way over to the hot dog and me.
I saw him when he was maybe 10 feet away and I didn't move. I was real close to the fire with my boots right at the edge. He must have really wanted that hot dog, because he came right up to the edge of the fire and he repeatedly tried to reach for it and then backed away from the heat. At one point he actually nudged my boot a few times. I eventually felt sorry for him so I moved my foot slightly a couple of times to let him know I wasn't a tree and he moved to the edge of the campsite. I picked up the hot dog and tossed it to him. I think he was one happy camper that night
The next day we were siting around the fire again and heard something behind us. It was a raccoon, no doubt the same one from the night before, on our picnic table with a can of mixed nuts in his hands that we had left there. I saw where this was headed so I clapped my hands hard and got up. Well, he was already off with the can and gone in a flash.
My wife still kids me that a raccoon once stole my nuts
And after I had given him a good snack the day before
