I despise those people that say, "well you quit smoking but you're still on those things!" I just shake my head in wonder. Apparently they have very little understanding, not only of ecigs, but of the effort we as ex-smokers put forth to get away from cigarettes to begin with. Makes me wanna throw a two year old temper tantrum, but I resist.

One of the benefits of being older (retired) is that I just do whatever I want to these days and that's that. So far I have been vaping happily for 3 weeks and the only person who knows I did it even ONCE is a friend who smokes and I told her she should give it a try. I have never smoked "in public," so I am just kind of waiting for someone to say hey you don't stink anymore, and then I am just going to say yep, I quit smoking. No need to go further unless it is another smoker and for them I will suggest they give vaping a try. BTW, I had a kind of negative mother, too--the good news on that front is that it makes you a "nicer" parent!

Perhaps even a "nicer" person in general. Some parents guide us into what we should be...others in what not to be.

Wonder if it is people in the south who have the biggest issues. I've gotten little support from most people at first. A good bit of skepticism from both smokers and non smokers. I've converted my moms opinion mostly, but she did ask me if I could get arrested if a cop saw me with it. I just laughed because my hubby's a police officer and she knows their are B&M shops. She was afraid they'd think it was a drug pipe of some kind.

I think the worst ones are people who say "you didn't quit, you just switched delivery systems." After almost 20 years of smoking, that one really bothers me. Yes I still get my nicotine, but that doesn't mean it was easy. Sorry, guess I'm a bit over sensitive too!

I've gotten nothing but good reactions from people. Every single time I break out my PV in front of someone I haven't seen for awhile, they ask me when I quit smoking. There's no "what is that" to go through. They instantly know what it is and what it means - that I'm inhaling vaporized nicotine in a liquid instead of burning it in leaf form, and in their minds (mine too) I quit smoking.
It's pretty common here in Hawaii, and most of my friends range from mid30s to 60s, so I don't think it's much of a generational thing. There isn't a big public education campaign, and in fact we have some of the more stupid anti-vaping laws being proposed. Maybe it's just because we all hate cigarette butts on our beaches so much. I don't know what it is, but I can tell you from experience, when vaping isn't something people only heard about on the news, when their uncle and friend's cuz and the cute girl from Foodland all vape.... when it becomes a normal thing that normal people do, people stop being so scared and start congratulating you on quitting smoking. ;)

My dogs are small. They have the…Let me at 'em, I'll rip 'em to shreds….attitude. I try to explain they would be an appetizer for a coyote but they disagree.

Lol. My 23# female Pug beats up on my 85# Pit bull all the time, and he just takes it. Considering that MY head fits in his mouth easily, I think that's a good thing.

Too bad they don't understand that at least you're no longer inhaling the 30 to 70 (depending on source) KNOWN carcinogens in cigarette smoke. Some people listen, some you just gotta walk away from.

Ah, the car. I can't seem to get it through my head that the window no longer needs to be wide open.

Yeah but make sure you roll it down when you exhale, Vape tends to fog up windows bad, especially high VG vape, lenses of glasses too. lol.

The most negative responses I've ever gotten was from a current smoker, "they say, puff puff, hack, that those are more dan, hack cough, gerous than cough hack, these things you know", and ex-smokers, "oh you mean the things I finally gave up years ago". "why don't you just totally quit, I did". That's just 2 people out of 100 though, the 98 other people were curious, asked questions, which I answered, but basically were cutting into my vape time, so now I make sure I have the ear buds on and the volume cranked while reading a book, hate it when they cut into my vape time at work. lol

I have gotten mainly support and much interest from family and friends, they quickly latch on to my enthusiasm wanting to learn more in hopes that they can help a smoking friend or loved one. Plus they always let me vape in their homes and often ask me to blow some vape their way so that they can get a better whiff of my custom DIY blends. ahh, that smells greatl, what are you vaping today? Even had a suit at work say, Damn, your breath smells wonderful!!, that never happened when I smoked. lmao

Ignorant idiots I ignore, open minded people I'll inform and educate, as long as it doesn't cut into my vape time. lol

Vape long and prosper!!

Does anyone else still feel cigarette defensive? I'm only wrapping up day 6 so I'm sure my attitude will change with time but I still hesitate to share my significant news. Not because I fear failure but negativity instead of support. Don't get me wrong, I'm so very excited to be a non-smoker after 40+ years that I want to shout it from the rooftops but I still don't want to hear the inappropriate comments. I've already heard things like…now that you're not smoking you can…or I've heard e-cigs are bad…or but you're still on nicotine. Really? Really? They are well meaning but…really? You still feel the need to point out to me why it's good that I quit or the benefits of quitting? It makes me feel like another "you should just quit" lecture coming on when a simple "Good for you!" or "Congratulations" would suffice.
Sorry for the rant. Just wondering if others still feel defensive as I'll be the first to admit I can be over-sensitive. The monkey is off my back but I still have slight pangs for the loss of a trusted companion although it is far outweighed by the benefits. I've heard enough negativity for 40 years. Just keep it positive friends and family.

Just tell the know-it-alls that "It must be nice to be you, being so perfect has got to feel great!!" Then go and get your vape on and forget them!!

Dice57 is that a Cheetoh you've got there? Looks like my grand cat.
My pet peeve (talking analogs here) are the people that quit their pack a month and want to criticize my struggles beating my 1.5 PAD for 40 years. Not to diminish their accomplishment but I just don't see how they can give me the "I did it you can too" lecture. Apples to oranges IMO.

CERTAINLY NOT!

I was in hospital for a month for tuberculosis, and on antibiotics for a year because of it.
If anybody says any such sillyness, perhaps I'll just smile, smirk or ignore their ignorance knowing that my lungs are in much better shape; or if it's a friend I might mention that there's no smoke particles or tar messing up my lungs and no ash and ashtray, and smelly clothes or smelly room or car.

Everybody's smoking (and quitting) experience is different. To criticize your journey towards being analog-free, instead of empathizing or at least acknowledging the effort is intentional belittlement or at least ignorance, in my opinion. I applaud your attempts to better yourself.

FYI- Dice57'S cat is something special.

I usually just mention the lack of carcinogens and about 4000 other ingredients. Can't argue with that.

Been me when I was smoking - neither assertive nor defensive, still am me when vaping - neither assertive nor defensive.

But I can relate to your feelings - vaping is a game changer and it is also a life changer - big time.

My first puffs on my first kit : holy wow... like pushig open the door to a new world :)

Totally agree with this! I tried my first vape in October 2013. Dropped analogs immediately. A week later, I tried an analog I smoked for 20+ years: nasty taste. This being said, I don't push vaping on people I know that smoke. I will answer any questions and encourage an interest in change, but pushing just seems to bring resistance. People are more open to change when it is their idea.

Can I just say you're awesome, Steamix? Great attitude and never truer words. People are who they are regardless of circumstances.

some friends get a bit defensive when i talk about vaping, but then i just use it indoors when we're hanging out and they have to go in the cold.

Most public places I have been in treat vapers like smokers (i.e.- pushed outside or to designated smoking areas). I'm not discouraged by this, however. When I'm vaping by smokers and the subject comes up, I am passive and positive about vaping at the same time. Talking to another vaper however, all bets are off. I'll preach to the choir till the cow come home!

Thank you :)

Going along with BlindSquirrel there, if someone asks about that contraption in my mouth and appears genuinely interested and time permits it, s/he may pick my brains about it. I make no secret about the fact that I am still smoking the odd analog for the heck of it, that it got me off chainsmoking, that my friends appreciate it that they now see me before they smell me ( owing to the fact that my clothes don't smell like the aftermath of a forest fire anymore ), that I stopped hacking my lungs out in the morning after just two weeks of vaping. I also give 'em the weblink to ECF and other forums to make up their own minds.

Some folks plus their smug/smart/snide/silly remarks. Well, I tell 'em a secret ;) . Pure, raw, steamed or smoked - it don't matter to the worms dining on your corpse ;)
