Dehydration Dilemma

Hey guys! so i would consider myself a pretty veteran vaper with alot of knowledge of PG/VG juices, builds, rdas, mechanical mods and such. (Not trying to be a douche in any way) but recently ive been having some gnarly issues. The issues being cotton mouth, circles around the eyes, receding gums, dry skin and tight muscles. Ive read here and there that "its the pg" or "its the vg!!" or you dont drink enough water etc... I drink atleast 1 gallon of water a day (a lot of ......) and i switched from pg to vg and its all been the same. ive read that its from dehydration and i hit the gym usually about 2 or 3 times a week drink lots of water so what could it be?

Theres a lot of things that could cause this really.... Nicotine level, flavoring that contains alcohol, the type of vg youre using, or maybe youre not a diy juicer and maybe even the brand youre buying is causing it! The only other thing i can think of off the top of my head is the temp youre vaping at. Im not a doctor or anything but try checking this stuff out. I hope it helps

I really think the dehydration stuff is a myth..... there is no proof or tests that shows vaping causes dehydration... and if there is I would love to have the link to it...

You got me curious, so I did some searching with Google and "propylene glycol hygroscopic humectant". the following site came up. Pretty interesting reading.

I know dehydration,And BOTH PG/VG do so. You may not be affected by either and that's fine.
I remember the first night I started vaping. It was Christmas morning and my brother woke me.
The first thing I said was "someone stabbed my tounge and I can't swallow."
I've seen bloody noses amongst friends and know that if I don't drink enough water I'll wake up parched where drinking a glass of water won't satiate . IT'S ABSOLUTELY DEHYDRATING.
I'm actually curious where you think this "myth" perpetuates from? "

Good point and good discussion. Perhaps it might be better to say that vaping (among other things) contributes to (rather than causes) dehydration. Many folks don't drink enough water to begin with. I know I was one of them. Vaping takes a bit more water out of my system (and your point is well taken - it's just a bit) than before I was vaping, so it was contributing to an already-established condition.

Thanks, I'll remember this conversation the next time I recommend drinking water while vaping and moderate that suggestion a bit.

some people get a dry mouth from vaping, therefore they believe they are dehydrated.... becoming nervous can cause a dry mouth... but they wernt vaping...
PG/VG are hygroscopic ( has an affinity to attract moisture) but only up to 40% of its actual volume... in other words, if you consumed and exhaled 10 ml of a VG/PG product, it would attract 4 ml of water... so for every 10ml of juice you vape you loose 4 ml of water... about a tablespoons worth. This is why I believe vaping causes dehydration is a myth...

Not trying to be an ***, but what do you know about dehydration? Honest question, no snark.

About 20 years of massive alcohol consumption and drugs. Dehydration was alway the worst part.
Kicked everything long ago, except cigarettes until recent but vaping parched me like nothing other . I'm used to it now though but it's certainly not a myth.

Thanks for the explanation voodoochicken :thumb:.

IMO there is nothing worse than hangover dehydration. Vaping never did anything even close to that to me, but it does dehydrate some people. The worst I ever experienced was a slightly dry mouth that I felt was more a irritation than dehydration. Now that I vape zero nic it doesn't affect me at all, so for me it's all the nic. Then again I used to do long distance bike riding and even when I was 3-4 pounds low on water I felt fine.

I suspect if someone is healthy they are not going to be affected by this much, but that's just my opinion. For sure though some people are much more affected by it than others.

You're right, they're both hygroscopic; many people think VG is less so because their throat and mouth won't be so parched, but that's the emollient topical effect of VG; it's just as hygroscopic as PG.

Raz, have you tried coconut water? It worked for me when I was so dehydrated that my electrolytes got totally trashed, sore puffy feet and ankles, it was awful, but coconut water both a) hydrates marvelously, and b) keeps the electrolytes in good working order.

Just chugging gallons of water won't help, because that just makes you pee more, so you pee out electrolytes, and the cycle just keeps getting worse. Adding coconut water, and also drastically reducing any caffeine intake, will keep you more hydrated without making your kidneys go nuts flushing all those electrolytes out Sports drinks are also not very useful, because they have as much sodium as potassium. When I first started it, I drank about 12oz of coconut water daily, till the problem cleared up, and now I drink 6-8oz daily, though if I start getting any foot/leg cramps, I drink some more -- the cramps are kind of my "distant early warning" of my hydration/electrolytes starting to go south again. I use the Zico brand, not from concentrate; they have it at Walmart, on the "mixers" aisle (tonic, soda water, etc).

One other thing that might help a little is try using a slightly higher nic level, so you vape less, which reduces your exposure to the PG/VG.

Many medications, including over the counter stuff, even cold meds can cause dry mouth. Are you taking anything at all?

I'm a 10 year MAV sufferer (chronic migraine condition) and take a daily med that cause dry mouth as a side effect and I already drink tons of fluid before I began vaping. Since vaping I noticed a slight increase in my fluid intake but nothing insane.

Anyways, my point is there is hundreds of medications out there that can cause dehydration symtoms like dry mouth and may not be vaping related at all. Medications include cold, depression, pain, anxiety, antihistasmines and decogestants.

I personally think you should see a doctor as health is nothing to mess with and no one here is a doctor and even if some here is, they cannot examine you online lol
