I hate when that happens. My Dream 801 atty had that nasty oil on it. I soaked it in Everclear. That stuff cuts the oil very good. Are you using Dawn dish detergent? That cuts oil very good also.
Just ordered some of the Kanthal ribbon wire. Still trying to get this darn Zap working right.
When you get a chance could you post a pic of the top of the atty?
I never heard of him. Does he do talk radio or something? If he's a good looking guy theres a chance we might be related.
A couple of pointers.
Wrap the coil in such a way as to shorten the distance as much as possible on the bottom leg going to the negative post and top leg to the top post. You don't have to have a perfectly spaced coil for it to fire properly. If your wick is properly oxidised then all you need to do is make sure that the entire coil is in contact with the wick (pull it tighter if you need too). Don't put any liquid into the tank until the entire coil is firing evenly. If your spending a lot of time on the same coil then pull it off, throw it away and wrap a new one. Burn your wire first, straighten it, then wrap a new one.

Could somebody educate me on the benefits of the flat wire? Is it just for more coverage?
Looks like a coverage thing. If I didn't have the 28 and 30 I would probably order some but i went nuts when I first started getting wire and bought way too much of it. I need a bigger house to put all my vape crap in but can't afford it until I stop buying all this vape crap. lol
I hear ya there. I ordered 32 and 30 gauge only to discover I already had 100' of 32 that I forgot getting. Now I have the ribbon wire coming too. No end in site.
I left the darn thing alone today. Tomorrow I will try again.
You could also try NOT oxidizing your wicks. Have either of you noticed the oxide discussion. Plenty of people making out allright pulsing a non-oxidised wick and working out the shorts. Most seem to be using some variation of the petar k method. SS mesh is one of those things everyone does differently though, so I'm afraid at the end of the day, you'll just have to keep on going until you finally figure out whatever works for you

I've tired it that way and I know people swear by it but it always seemed like the flavor wasnt where it should have been. I torch the top part of the wick where the coil is going to sit pretty good and just very lightly torch the rest of the wick. I'm anxious to try out the pourous ceramic wicks.
I'm with you on the porous ceramic wicks (though not interested in the ceramic rope stuff) - those look very promising. I've tried a few SS wicks now and haven't hit on one I like, but I do have a kinda crappy SS device (GV calls it "monster mesh", I forget what the other name is). Still just cotton for me for now.
