We consume a lot of things that should never be released into the environment. Look at the amount of trace drugs we get in our drinking water because people flush expired medications down the toilet instead of disposing of them properly.

I thought much of that was from all those FDA approved meds being recycled more naturally? My daily prescriptions + staying hydrated = pee frequently!

While this might seem off topic, some day we are going to have to come to grips with not simply human productivity's effect on the environment, but the magnitude of the human footprint upon our earth. The environmental effects of most of what we consume and dispose of are exaggerated by tremendous overpopulation.

Being concerned with how do deal with the excesses of human industry is to be perhaps looking for solutions at the wrong end of the problem.

Nicotine as an insecticide is bad for honey bees (and other pollinators) and has been directly linked to colony collapse disorder. Even sublethal concentrations alter the behavior of social bees and reduce survival of entire colonies, so, no I would never use it for that.
Nicotine is classified as a hazardous substance under federal law as well as most state laws or regulations.
"Nicotine-containing gums, lozenges, patches, and e-cigarettes are considered acute hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations at 40 CFR 261.33(e) for nicotine and salts (EPA waste code P075) and thus may be subject to hazardous waste regulation when discarded."
The EPA recommends that you check with your local solid waste district for information about household hazardous waste management options in your area.

Only problem is, there are somewhere between 15 and 20 million of us. If 5 million, somewhere between a third and a quarter, dispose of one 30 mL bottle down the drain in a single month, that equals almost three quarters of a million 55 gallon drums by month's end. That's a lot of juice.

You people suck at DIY then. :p

Besides, what about all those bazillions of nicotine (and filter) containing cigarette butts you are no longer contributing to the environment? We sure weren't over-thinking about what happened to those.

Some times We over think things a bit, Sure trying to protect the environment is important. Is the solution more of a problem than the exposure. In this case the consciences act is "Dilution is cure for pollution" Just water it down till the nic is relatively speaking gone.
