The Specials I bought are the same, still in the same pack as always. Absolutely no change at all. Same exact pack. Says: 20 KRETEC Clove Cigarettes, as I said, same, same, no change. Smoked them exclusively for eight years after they quit importing the King Size which were like Specials, but a little more mild. Believe it or not, the normal Djarum Specials are still available. I just bought a carton and smoked two of them. Read my post. The man in the
tobacco store told me that the ban did not effect the Specials, only the lights. However, I did notice that the Blacks were in a different box and said, "Cigars", but I didn't buy any and can't say what they are. I'm not lying and I know my cloves.
Actually, the ban does affect the Djarum Special cigarettes, and all other clove cigarettes as well, not just the Lights.
In response to the ban, Djarum is now marketing
filtered cigar versions of most of their clove cigarette lines sold in the U.S. I have seen and purchased Djarum Black, Black Cherry, Black Vanilla, Special, Bali Hai, and Splash
fcigars in local tobacco shops.
The difference is simply the legal distinction between a
cigarette and a
cigar. A cigarette is wrapped in paper, but a cigar is wrapped in tobacco leaf. The bill specifically bans the sale of flavored
cigarettes, but flavored
cigars are
not mentioned. Hence, to continue selling product in the United States, Djarum has taken their clove cigarettes, wrapped them in tobacco leaf instead of paper, and markets them as filtered cigars in packs of 12. They are larger in diameter (thicker) than the cigarettes they replaced, most likely because there may be a minimum diameter they must be in order to be legally classified as a cigar (in addition to being wrapped in tobacco leaf).
However, that said, the bill really did not say whether
existing stock can or cannot be sold. Most likely, that tobacco store's distributor still has some stock of Djarum Special cigarettes, and will continue to deliver them to tobacco shops until their stock is exhausted (at which point they will begin distributing the filtered cigars exclusively). When this "turnover" will happen I have absolutely no idea. But the FDA bill most definitely is putting a stop to clove
cigarettes being sold here.
The filtered cigars do draw and taste a bit different than the cigarettes which they replaced, but they are very close. If you prefer a fuller flavor clove cigarette, you may actually even prefer the new filtered cigars. Being wrapped in tobacco leaf adds some additional flavor and "richness" from my experience, which includes smoking cigarettes that I still have some boxes left "back to back" with the new replacement filtered cigars.
Luckily, the bill only stops the distribution and sale of flavored cigarettes -- clove of course included --
inside the United States. You can still order clove cigarettes from foreign countries and have them shipped to the United States. I have done just that and have ordered 23 packs of clove cigarettes directly from Indonesia, and they were delivered within a week. Many are brands and products that otherwise would not have been available in the United States even before the ban. Some sites will only sell cartons, but many also sell preselected sample packs or sell single packs of most (if not all) of what they sell. Obviously, it will be more expensive buying single packs instead of cartons, but it is still much cheaper than what is typically paid in a tobacco shop here -- between $2.50 and $5.00 a pack seems to be the norm. Also, you need to be aware that most packs of cigarettes produced for Indonesian domestic sale do not contain 20 cigarettes like is normally done in the United States. The most common contain either 16 or 12 cigarettes. Of the 23 packs I ordered, 10 packs contain 16 cigarettes, 11 packs contain 12, 1 pack contains 10, and 1 pack contains 6.
There is a chance that your shipment is picked up and refused by customs, but I have "read the fine print" on several Indonesian web sites, and many will re-send your order with no additional charge if it is seized by customs.
