That makes sense, and it certainly makes me a lot less uneasy to fiddle with it all later. Yeah...this is going to be more of a hobby than just an alternative, methinks. Lol.

....another one bites the dust!! I am too embarrassed to say what I've spent on e-cig gadgetry and potions, and I've only been at it for two weeks now! LOL Yeah, I'm kind of a spaz! :p

I fear that I'm going to be quickly following in your footsteps. I already have a lot of crazy ideas about my own miniature "laboratory" of sorts, lol.

I've always loved Teaberry gum--made by Clark. There is also a Beeman's gum that tasted like teaberry. Beeman's is now made by Adams candy co. and they make clove gum and Black Jack (black licorice) too. It's retro-gum, but is still made and sold in some places. I live in a little village in Indianapolis that is a small old hippie, artsy type mecca where even the gas stations sell lines of retro candy. Yummy stuff, that Beemans and Teaberry gum!

The teaberry gum is the greatest. It's always available at Cracker Barrel, along with the Beemans Clove and the Blackberry.

Here's a recipe from the DIY e-liquids forum. I have the ingredients on order for this and i'm just waiting for it to arrive.

You, sir, rock.

I've just switched from blacks to vaping; my wife and I both got DSE 801's yesterday, and found the clove flavor from Janty to be a bit lacking. Granted, we didn't expect it to taste exactly the same (a friend of ours had already switched, and let me take a puff off his, so I was prepared for the difference), but were hoping for a bit stronger flavor than what we got.

As it stands, even if we can't come up with something that's similar, I still think I'm digging the vaping more than smoking. A day in and already my sinuses aren't screaming at me. :D

Praise the computer gods for Google! I was snooping around for some hint of what might be in Djarum kreteks. Lo and behold I stumbled onto an article that suggests these three spices (in addition to others) that go into the Blacks. While Blacks weren't ever my first choice, they easily became my #2 pick for cloves when Specials weren't in stock.

Get this: cloves (duh), cinnamon (could be the cheaper verson of cinnamon, Chinese cassia or Cinnamomum cassia ), and CARDAMOM. Now there's a spice I'd forgotten about, although I keep cardamom on hand to make my own blend of chai. Now, I'm wondering too about nutmeg since it abounds in Indonesia and, without a doubt, the spices in the "special sauce" are to be considered native Indonesian spices. I also found some significant mention of nutmeg and mace. Mace is simply the lacy outer covering of the nutmeg, but is a spice in its own right (very compatible with cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon--think gingerbread or chai). No doubt Djarum also sweetens the mix because the first puff off a Djarum is always an "ahhhh" experience because of the sweet and spicy taste. I would go with liquid Splenda (sucralose) since a mere drop will sweeten a lot of juice.

Here's what I found at Port Numbay :: Java Tobacco Supplier and Indonesian Cigarette Company - Djarum:
DJARUM BLACK

The most popular subbrand of Djarum cigarettes (internationally at least), Djarum Black, is sold in black packaging. Each cigarette is rolled in black paper. They are sold in flat, skinny packs of twenty cigarettes, rows of ten across and two deep (as are nearly all other internationally sold Djarum products). The package bears an embossed Djarum gramaphone stylus logo, and a stylized red "A" in the word "Black". Blacks are a medium potency cigarette, comparable with "Medium" flavor cigarettes of many other common brands like Marlboro, though their tastes are dissimilar, attributable to the Asian "Srintil" versus American tobacco and the addition of cloves. By weight, cloves make up about 40% of the cigarette, the remaining 60% being tobacco. The filter of Blacks are coated in a spiced "sauce", flavored with spices native to the region; mainly the taste is of clove, cardamom, and cinnamon; the "sauce" is also rather sweet. Blacks are packed much tighter than most American brands of cigarettes, and tend to be hard to draw from for the first few drags. They also have a tendency to go out if not drawn from regularly, an effect that is exaggerated if the user packs the cigarettes prior to use. An additional effect of tight packing is the propensity for Blacks to burn 1/4-1/3 longer than more common brands, though this is of course dependent on the individual smoker as well.

It should also be noted that most Djarum Black cigarettes advertised for online purchase are different from those most commonly sold in America. Arguably inferior to the 20 pack International packs, these cigarettes actually originate from Indonesia and are sold in either packs of 16 or 12 cigarettes with noticeably looser wrapping and much milder taste.

So, there's a little contribution toward finding that perfect Djarum clove mix. I think we should experiment and come up with something that warms our hearts like a Djarum Special )

Lizinator, you are fantastic...thanks for the superb research!!! I think this Djarum Special frankenstein project may actually come to fruition someday, lol.

Also...please, please come back here to post any [successful OR failed, both] experiments for all to see, everyone! I will be doing the same when I finally get my hands on the proper funds and materials. You guys are just beyond awesome. :thumb:

Scarlette, I think you're my new hero! I've been smoking Specials for almost 20 years, with this ban I've been in a kind of quiet desperation, never really smoked anything else.

While searching for an online place to buy them your post came up. I'd never heard of e-cigarettes before...I'm still researching which vaper I want, and then I am all over this.

Sitting, I suggest doing a forum search for "cloves" and you'll find a number of members who have been in search of the Holy Grail of kreteks--that awesome Djarum flavor. Specials are my very favorites, but could switch to Blacks or another Djarum smoke if forced heheh. I understand missing the taste and I'm working on it so stay tuned...

One more die-hard D Special fan here. Smoking them for 10 years.

Just bought my first e-cig(510) and recieved it a couple days ago. Bought a few flavors from Aromajuice including "clove". Not impressed.

I don't think I'll get in to trying lots of flavors. All I really want is a decent liquid for a D Specials substitute.

So their secret sauce is guarded equal to that of the Coca-Cola recipe and includes hundreds of fruits, spices, flavorings..etc so it may be tough to nail; but it sounds like you guys are on to some of the foundations.

Has anyone tried the recipe in the this thread that can report on the result? I've got 75% of the ingredients ordered and just need the tobacco/nic juice. I also ordered some liquid splenda for sweetner as I thought that might be useful for this recipe. Maybe even mod a sweetened catridge as the mouthpiece to simulate the real thing even more.

What about the Eugonol that cause numbing and smell? Is that in the essential clove oil already? From what I researched, it seems like it's in the oil.

I joined this forum just to figure this out with you guys.

Thanks. I thought I'd start manifesting this into reality.

Did everyone give up? One more day til clove ban. Stocked up myself so im good for a few months. Would like to have a good recipe by then.

I'm still waiting on the nutmeg and nic to try this out.

The e-cig has weened me off analogs slightly...its not a instant switch...but I do find myself picking up the e-cig before the clove. The cloves even taste a little strange after vaping some ry4. I gotta say, that ry4 is not bad at all. Its the "after a meal" fix that is the hardest to satisy with vape.

Having the same issue. We're down to our very last cloves tonight, then it's nothing but vaping, as we won't smoke normal analogs.

Odd as it seems, menthol + vanilla vaping seems to work for me after a meal.

I do recall someone here mentioning that (or their significant other) they had worked out a (near?) perfect Djarum Black recipe, but I can't find the thread.

If *that* could be perfected, I would be in heaven, since the analog cloves leave a strong "burnt ham" smell after a while, and vaping doesn't have that particular issue.

Let us know how your efforts work out. :D

they banned Cloves?

Yep. That's what originally got my wife and I into vaping. Can't stand the taste (and smell) of normal analogs. Though after mostly vaping for the last few weeks, I've noticed that the cloves have a bit of a bad smell too. Not *as* bad as standard cigs (the clove helps a lot) but still... makes your skin, hair, and clothes smell like something akin to a Thanksgiving disaster. ;)

New member... First post... Hi everyone. :)

I smoked Djarum Splash exclusively for 15+ years, then started on Djarum Menthols just a few months before the ban kicked in. Like iblis above, the ban of my darling cloves is what has brought me to vaping, as I will not smoke regular analogs. I have a Joye 510 on order (should be here in the next day or so), along with "clove" and "menthol" juices from e-smokeytreats.com, even though I know I will need more juices to blend to get anything near satisfactory. (I just had to start somewhere.)

What about this RY4 juice? It's described as a "sweet" and "mildly spicy" tobacco flavor, correct? I may try that mixed with clove, and a touch of menthol. Maybe by adding in some of the other spices mentioned by Lizinator we can arrive at something close to the flavor we all crave?

Of course, I'm a total newbie, so this whole ordeal is already overwhelming my synapses. But please keep me informed as to any progress you all make, and I will do the same.

Meanwhile, I have one Djarum cigarette left. :( I hope my 510 arrives tomorrow...

I miss my cloves...i jumped between cherry (red) and black when I used to smoke them. The idea of adding clove flavor to RY4 is a good idea...unfortunately I don't have any RY4 to try it with. The Djarum black recipe I made did taste really good though, just maybe a little off. I'd like to try adding nutmeg oil into mix to see if that makes a difference. (Oil isn't necessarily bad for the atty, btw, as long as you don't put too much of it in your juice.) There's definitely something "fruity" in the mix or a Djarum though...can't quite put my finger on it. Quick, somebody put a Djarum in one of those mass spectrometer thingies and get to cracking the recipe! I want my Djarums back in vapor form, stat!
