Since there are so many smart guys watching this thread (and the discussion about a device that isn't even out yet has grown stagnant)...
Do LiPo batteries expand/contract when charged/discharged?

Last night I could feel the LiPo in my eVic moving inside the enclosure when the battery was damned near empty. After it charged overnight the movement was gone. I haven't felt that "clunk" before, but I had never discharged the battery that far.

How long will the beta process be I wonder? I hope the DNA beta test will go on for a few months before the device is released so that Evolv gets the best possible data on real life performance and can touch up hardware and software as required for a positive product introduction. I'm a little concerned that the beta test might be rushed since some folks are promising delivery in days for preorders. It could be that it's a staged beta where some folks have had the device for several months and some are in the late beta period and have only had the unit for a couple days.

If there are folks who are beta testers could you let us know how long you have had to work with the device?

It would also be interesting to know how detailed the operating instructions and other information that comes with the DNA 200 device is. That user communication will also be important to a positive product introduction for us new users.

Duane
Maybe they've been beta testing for weeks or months and only recently started talking about it? Loading new firmware just before shipping isn't hard or uncommon.

I've read that some cheap Lipos can swell up to 10% of it's size.

Exactly....a staged beta is common for complex devices where user safety is important. I think the DNA 200 deserves a well planned beta that isn't a matter of only days.

That's why I hope all the beta testers here will let us know how long they have had to work with the device so we can purchase with confidence.

    The short answer...yes, they expand/contract.

Pouch cells have pretty strict requirements for mounting and support. All cells try to expand/contract when cycled due to gases generated during the electrochemical reactions. Cylindrical cells also do this but the can prevents any change in size/shape. Pouch cells, however, unless properly supported will swell from these gases. This is not a good thing if left unchecked and leads to accelerated cell degradation and layer delamination over time. This results in higher internal resistance and increased heating...accelerating the expand/contract/delaminate/damage cycle.

[edit] there also can literally be a change in the size of the electrolyte molecules based on what molecules are being created/destroyed in the reactions. You might scoff at the idea of this having a visible effect but think about rust. The change in size between iron and iron oxide molecules is large enough to cause a significant change in size of the rusted metal vs the raw iron.

They do slightly. I have 3s 5600 packs that i use for RC cars. They puff slightly with full charge and contract slightly once they hit LIPO cutoff(3.6v in this instance)

Travis!! I see you made it out of newbie jail finally. (still cant believe you waited so long to make an account here)

Why didn't I think to ask you this question before I went and showed my ignorance in front of everybody?

If anyone is insterested i can measure mine discharged and charged with calipers to give you an idea on expansion.

All we can say at this time has been said.. questions that could be answered at this time have been and those asked that we cannot answer at this time have not been answered..... beta testing requires a NDA.... when more info can be given hopefully it will be....hope this helps....

Wow, thanks for the response, I understood about half of it!o_O

So, anything to be concerned with? It was hardly noticeable, and I could only detect movement in one direction. So it's not like it was rattling around in there.

*short answer will be fine ;)

I think you're fine. As long as the shifting isn't rubbing through the shrink wrap or damaging the cells. :)
Just follow all recommendations for charging/discharging/storage and don't overheat the cells.

Has anyone here participated in the beta test of the DNA 200?

dr g are you a beta tester?

Cloudmakers is going to offer the DNA 200 as an option for those of us who have discount tokens on July 1. I'd really like to exercise that option. I know you mentioned you were a beta tester for the DNA 40. It would really help to know how long you have had to work with the DNA 200 if you are again in the beta test program for the DNA 200.

For me the fact that the mod gives a warmer vape in higher wattages, in TC mode, seems like a fundamental problem.

Let alone hitting it at 50W...and expecting 50W, but getting FIRE instead?

(Click play, it's timed to that comment)

    Fast cars 50-150 = GOOD!

    Mods 50-150 = BAD!

    you shouldn't need to know.
OK I guess you feel folks shouldn't know about the device before they buy it. I'm still interested in the Cloudmaker DNA 200 option and I hope someone else will choose to be helpful.

No other maker gives you access to beta testing data. If you can't make a decision based on what you know, don't adopt early.

4g63 as in Mitsubishi? Just sold my 97 gsx with a hybrid 20g plus much more, pushing 27psi on pump gas. Oh Ya forgot this about the DNA 200. Sorry. I wonder how long it will take to charge the new Vaporshark DNA 200. Prolly need at least a 2.1 amp wall charger. So many questions I have.
