Wow that's a detailed answer. Thank you very much. I have no idea about the dimensions you quoted (I'm a metric guy) but I will do the conversions and imagine something to see if it's feasible to do and to actually make it work. I'm certainly not going to bother you if I don't see myself making something great out of it :)

Time to hit the drawing board :)

But when you remove the packs from the hard case, measurements drop to 73 x 43 x 16mm.

Oh...Hobby King didn't show that picture. Does "73" include the recessed portion and the connectors?

Having a background in rc, lipo packs in mods scare the schit out of me. I've seen them puff for no good reason.

I raised the question as well. The consensus I got was that the charging and draining are vastly different. On a day of flying I may drain and charge a given pack in a matter of an hour, rinse and repeat. I too have seen them burn.

You don't want to make your own enclosure? I can make you a box that is any size you want, a lot like this. You would then have to put the holes where you liked and well, you know, build the mod.

This looks great. Where do you source the extruded aluminum that doesn't require a ridiculously high minimum length?

I too spent many years in the RC world and have used Li-Pos in all my box mods. I have the chargers, so why not?

Vapers use Li-Pos in a much less abusive way. Our rate of discharge is much lower. (3.7V, 100W, regulated mod pulls 34.5A max; 7.4V, 100W regulated, pulls 17.25W max). We don't try to charge our 5Ah batteries in less than an hour. The PV's chipsets prevent the battery from over-discharging, which is what causes most of the negative issues in the RC world, combined with rapid charging.

If using good equipment, Li-Pos pose little more threat than cylindrical Li-Ions. They are far superior in almost every way and cost less to boot.

Don't talk about RC please lol.

I puffed 6S lipos more than once and if you guys are afraid of a 1S lipo, imagine the fireball of a 6S.

However, aldenf is right. Vaping mods are not in the same league power wise. Nor do we abuse them like in RC. I had lipos giving out 95 amps continuous for 4 minutes, landed or crashed, let them cool off for half an hour (they get pretty warm poor things) and then charge them at 1 or 2 C to get back in the air as soon as possible.

100 charges and they were dead. Many wouldn't even make it to 100.

If a Li-Po is well protected, I don't see a problem. My gripe with them in mods is that I don't walk with my lipo chargers around and having a spare lipo in a pocket is just an accident waiting to happen.

Lions have the convenience of USB charging and the dedicated chargers are also small and portable

I get aluminum at the local big box stores, Amazon and from McMaster-Carr. Brass is typically from McMaster-Carr or Amazon. I have also ordered from Online Metal Store | Small Quantity Metal Orders | Metal Cutting, Sales & Shipping | Buy Steel, Aluminum, Copper, Brass, Stainless | Metal Product Guides at OnlineMetals.com but find that McMaster-Carr actually has a better selection.

You can use a lion charger on a lipo without any problem. Its just going to go slower than if you try to use a specialized charger (and no ballance charging -- but thats not needed on a 1s/2p configuration.)
But it will also cut off sooner at 4.2V and real men only walk with 4.34V charged up Li-Pos [emoji14]

well except when going to a warm room as they might vent  :D

4.34V Li-Pos. Yes. The RC days...

This is one of the reasons Li-Pos are fine for vaping. We limit their charge range from 3.2-4.2V and maybe 40A of burst discharge. We use 1A chargers, if we're lucky.

With YiHi's new internal, 1A balanced charger, I think we'll finally see more 7.4V setups as well. MY VAMO box mod with 1600mAh, 7.4V Li-Po is an all-day-vape for me with an RTA @ 12-15W.

The two packs will square up to the 73mm. The leads are not included in the dimensions.

The two Lipo packs stripped out of their housing may be ~2mm less in one dimension when compared to a pair of nominally sized 18650 batteries.

The space occupied by the Lipo packs is nearly 20% larger than that of 2 nominally sized 18650 batteries.

Agreed. But the Li-Pos are far superior to traditional cylindrical Li-Ions. It would take close to 6500mAh of Li-Ions to match the battery life of the Li-Pos, which also have nearly twice the number of charge cycles.

You would need a sled for 2x18650 right? so the Keystone 1840 is a typical one used -- here are its dimensions:
21.3 x 39.8 x 86 ~72905

OR you can use the through hole version at
21.3 x 39.8 x 77.1 ~65360

compare that to the lipo without the case @
16 x 43 x 73 ~50224

not to mention the lipos have will give you more mah and C
maybe im missing what you are trying to say... and in the end its your choice -- I just thought it was an interesting option to share :)

Hobby king has a 5600 1s/2p hardcase pack that is lots smaller overall than the two 18650s ;) -- plus the C rating they give blows even the VTC5's out of the water -- and if it ever needs to replaced its slightly cheaper than 2xVTC4 18650s.

I'm saying the matter in bold in the first quote is false.

It is a metal band with two wood skins. The bottom skin is installed permanently, the top skin uses magnets to attach to a mounting rail. I don't sell them but would be happy to make up a box for you to mod. You just have to get your size down exactly as you want. The side bar is typically 1", 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" wide and can be 1/16" or 1/8th thick. The 1/16 this is easy to work with, the 1/8 not so much (you can see it on the bench under the mod). The wood skins eat up 1/8" each, unless you want thicker skins. The bar that holds the magnets also makes the layout critical. If you went down that rout, I would probably send you a box of your specified inside dimensions and the materials to mount the magnets. I typically do not put the magnet rails in until the chip and everything else is in as you will find yourself out of room.

Got any pics of a completed mod? Looks like a great idea.
