I finished my 1st mod using the frame/cradle that I designed and Bapgood converted to a 3D file and submitted to Shapeways for production.

Mamu's DNA20D Screen Cradle

As it comes, it needs some sanding and then paint. I used 320 grit sandpaper on just the frame surface. I did 2 coats of black Dupli-Color automotive paint and didn't like that texture, so then sprayed one coat of black Krylon for plastics over the coats of Dupli-Color paint to tone down the texture. I cut a 21mm x 7mm clear Lexan piece for the frame's display hole. I bought the Lexan at Lowes - it has a depth of 2.5mm which is perfect (1mm for the frame thickness + 1.5mm for the case thickness). I swabbed the inside of the frame's display hole lightly with clear epoxy, then inserted the Lexan piece into place.

For the cutout to insert the frame in the case, I did a 23mm x 10mm rectangular hole.

The frame is designed for a 1.5mm case thickness. Max and Lexi have a 1.5mm case thickness, but Delsy has a 4mm case thickness, so I dremeled down to 1.5mm inside the case just in the area where the screen is attached to the cable. Then I glued the frame in place, slipped the screen in place in the cradle part and... magic... perfectly aligned and straight display with a nice professional finish on the surface of the case.

The display hole is 21mm x 7mm (the exact same size as the black transparent plastic piece adhered to the DNA20D screen). The total size of the frame is 27mm x 13mm and needs a mounting hole of 23mm x 10mm...

On the underside... 1.5mm for case thickness + 1mm ridge to slide the screen into...

I'm working on Lexi now and will post pics when I git er done. :toast:

Looks great! I can't wait to get mine.

At what point during the build did you slide the screen into the holder? And is it glued in, or just snap fit?

The screen was the last part to go in, then I secured it in its cradle with epoxy on each end.

Looking good mamu :toast:

I like how it turned out too. Especially nice to have the frame with Delsy as it's hard to not to get any tiny wood chips when cutting out the hole for the display.

got mine in today mamu, looks great. did you put lexan in before the screen

Yes - I inserted the piece of Lexan before I glued the frame in place.

When I'm ready to insert the screen into its cradle I hook up the DNA20D input to a batt. I like to turn the lights on the display to see what I'm doing - I don't like surprises. With the cradle it makes it much easier as the screen slips right into it and there's no finagling to get it aligned straight, but with two open ends in the cradle the left and right position of the display needs to be centered, so it helps to have the display on.

So I have question on these bezels. I want to order a few, and wondered what the difference between the black and white "strong and flexible" ones and the black and white "detail" ones are?

I'm assuming there is some difference in the material they are made with. Which one take paint better? I'll probably be painting them with a faux woodgrain or faux marble finish, and then clear-coating.

Thanks!

From my experience the materials are different and the difference is manifested in the texture of the finish. It is a light rough finish similar to sandpaper (obviously not as abrasive), and the detailed plastic has a finer finish (roughly analogous to a higher grit sandpaper). This is very general and others might be able to back me up or offer their own estimations, but I would say the strong and flexible (and alumide) is similar in grain to ~220 grit and the high detail is like ~400 grit.

I have not painted either so I can't say as far as adhesion. However I believe it would be possible to sand the strong and flexible to a finer finish. The main issue with that would be that the plastic seems to go "white" where cut or sanded ... which wouldn't be a problem since you are painting it anyway.

I ordered a bunch of standard Mamu screen holders but I am not going to end up using them. If anyone is looking to order these soon, I am looking to move them out and just recoup what I paid. I have black and both polished and unpolished alumide, plus a few blue. PM me if interested. You will save a crapload of time.

I hope this doesn't amount to BST, but I figure since I'm not looking to make a profit it's about the same as posting the original Shapeways link.

An update on what I've done with the frame/cradle to give you guys an idea of what's doable with it.

I adhere a 7mm x 21mm piece of tinted acrylic into the frame's window with a very thin layer of clear epoxy. When that dries I mount the display directly behind the acrylic in the cradle portion also using a very thin layer of clear epoxy.

After that's assembled, I position the frame unit in place from inside the case and finagle it through the case's cutout and into position on the outside of the case. Then I epoxy it into place inside the case using a gel epoxy.

For Stealthy I chose the black, strong and flexible material...same as with Delsy...

For Lexi I chose the transparent material...

Hey Mamu, where did you get the black fire button on your stealth mod?

I didn't really get it anywhere as it's a couple of parts that I custom modded to get the look I wanted.

Would it be possible for me to order one of the clear cradles? Also what washer is on top of those? Are they the same just ones painted?

You can order what you want from shapeways.com. If you're going to order just one, the shipping is a killer.

There's no washer on top, so not sure what you're referring to. The frame/cradle is a one piece unit. The frame seats on the outside while the cradle portion that holds the display seats on the inside.
