Ok…I admit it. I’m one of those who fell for the “free trial offer” trap (i.e., scam). Highping was right on the mark with his sticky, as my experience followed his “free trial” model like it was a recipe.

It started with “only” $9.84 for shipping, followed by $89.79 ten days after I received the package (what happened to my 14-day trial? Highping knows, the clock starts running when shipped). 21 days later, $44.79 for their “monthly refill program.” What? I never authorized that! Well, you gotta read the fine print, sucker. Phone calls were answered with the “all lines are busy, please try your call again later” loop, and emails were ignored. So I took the easiest way out: Reported my card “lost” and requested a new one.

Total damage: For “only” $144.52, I got a mini (the one that looks like an analog) w/ one batt, one attty, two chargers (wall, usb), and 25 prefilled carts (didn’t even get to choose the flavor!).

However, the glass is never half empty, always half full…right? The pv works decently. My pack-a-day analog use is down to less than half (painless, almost effortless). With Hawaii’s “sin” taxes added, price of analogs average well over $8/pack…so I’m ahead 4 bucks/day. But best of all, the scam prompted research that led me to ecf.

What a wealth of great information! Immersed myself for days. Absorbed the wisdom of the veterans, and finally registered. Now ready to “graduate” to better hardware/software with a well-informed purchase…as soon as my new card arrives.

Do I regret being suckered? You bet! But that’s life, and living your life is a continuous learning event. Knowledge we get from life’s experiences stay with us forever…and that’s called wisdom. So fellow noobs, learn from the wealth of wisdom of the vets. I hope in time to contribute to ecf’s knowledge pool.

If you’re on this forum b4 buying your first pv, lucky you. Read the vets’ recos and glean what you can. But if you were a sucker like me…you’re here…the glass is half full!!

\m/

p.s.: A huge motivation for registering is to help stop the potential legislative snowball. I signed the petition, downloaded the pdf, personalized it w/ a couple of intro paragraphs to explain why, made 10 copies each w/ original signatures, and snail-mailed to the 10 recipients at the bottom of the petition. Fellow noobs, you all need to do this…no exceptions…it’s that important!

p.p.s.: Truly apologize for this super long first post…just very excited and got carried away.

For those of you who use a credit card for on line purchases check with your CC company and see if they offer what's commonly called a "virtual credit card".
This is a feature attached to your CC account where you can get another number that will allow you to put your own upper limit and expiration date on it. Then once used it is only good for additional purchases from the original supplier, but not to exceed the upper limit you select, and only up to the expiration date you assign.

For example:
You want to try one of these "free trials" but don't want to be suckered into additional purchases you don't expect.
Using shaka808's example of "only" $9.84 for shipping you could get a virtual credit card with an upper limit of $10.00 (or any amount you want to assign to it) and an expiration 2 months hence (the default on mine).
After the purchase they could get the $9.84 for shipping, but then anything over $0.16 would be refused for lack of funds. Also, the CC number would expire after 2 months and would then be useless.

This "virtual CC number" is not only good for this type of purchase but is also good for ANY CC purchase where you don't want to give out the "base" number of your CC where additional charges, scams, thefts, or other unauthorized charges can be added without your approval or knowledge.

I have my CC through FIA and the feature there is called "shop Safe". The "virtual CC number" is the only way I'll use my CC on line.

Seriously, keep the personal attacks out of this thread. This is a place where people can learn about experiences with free trials and be warned that many have had bad experiences.

Imarketman does have a valid point. In any contractual situation you can understand what is going to happen if you actually read the contract. Granted, some companies will violate their own contracts and try to screw you anyway, but I have no doubt that there must be some companies out there actually honoring the offers they make.

Would he have made that comment if igotcha had made the remark I did about free trials?

The problem being addressed in this thread is that there is a significantly higher number of companies out there using these free trial offers to lure people in and then charging them anyway in the hopes that some people will be too lazy to do anything about it.

Everyone here should have a say about any topic, but keep it on topic.

I agree urbancowboy and don't normally reply in that manner but knappy decided to attack me first in his finite knowledge about what everyone else is doing or not doing and just because I happened to be the only one that found a good "free trial" is no reason to attack and especially in that manner. He could have just disagreed and all would have been fine. I'm quite aware the the majority of "free trials" are not that at all, which is the reason I stated that you really NEED to read all the terms and conditions, etc. And I also noticed that you quoted my remark and not his...because I'm new?

I'm not saying I will never market ecigs but I have no site or articles or anything else that could be construed as marketing ecigs. I want to but I don't market something I know nothing about as some are known to do. I'm just another guy trying to find an escape from something that I love but know will kill me one day unless I do something about it.

On the flip, thanks for validating my comment about reading all the small print. I have quite a bit of experience about "free trials" from the marketing standpoint and finally quite promoting them all because I didn't like the way they were used. The one thing most count on is people not reading the terms and conditions of the advertised trial period. I think that if they say 14 or 30 days then that should be from the time you received your purchased product...but who am I except one that doesn't have to continue helping someone else rip others off. I'm here to do research (for future promoting) but also learn all I can for me and my health.

I feel pretty grateful to that radio ad that offers the "free e-cig". Before I heard that ad, I had never even heard of the e-cig, and hearing the radio ad is what caused me to google "electronic cigarette" so that I could find out more about it. This forum popped up at the top of the google list, and being a fan of forum-style information anyway, I naturally clicked on it. What a wonderful discovery it was too!

So I thankfully did not fall into the "free trial" trap, but I am still grateful to that radio ad that inadvertently led me here. : )

Is Direct E-Cig legit or no?
Looks pretty legitimate, and extremely interesting.
And actually, it looks like it very well might be an RN4081 model.

The starter kit comes with an atomizer AND some cartomizers.
Not a bad idea really.

BUT, THEY CLAIM TO HAVE A 5 VOLT BATTERY?
If that part is true, they really have something good there.

EDIT: SORRY, I READ THE TERMS, AND THEY ARE NOT LEGITIMATE
EDIT: THEY WILL BILL YOU $60 PER MONTH FOR NEW CARTRIDGES UNLESS YOU OPT OUT

I agree with you. From what little I have found out, it appears that they are 5 volts. They only sell a wall charger for them, which tells me that the usual USB charger may not be suitable.

And they talk about burning up the battery if you overcharge it.

I saw a discussion around here a few days ago regarding how it is not possible to make a 5v battery.
I would like to point the people in that discussion to this battery and see what they think.

Now I just gotta go find that thread again.
