Smoke by definition is the gaseous particles created by the act of combustion, as by-products of the ignition of oxygen and a fuel source, or something like that.
Since it's quite common for Vapor to be misinterpreted as steam, maybe this will help those that don't utilize the dictionary.

We use vapor to distance us from what we have always called "smoking" of analogs. Don't get this confused with what the word and process actually is.

Compliments of Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary
Vapor:
1: diffused matter (as smoke or fog) suspended floating in the air and impairing its transparency
2 a: a substance in the gaseous state as distinguished from the liquid or solid state b: a substance (as gasoline, alcohol, mercury, or benzoin) vaporized for industrial, therapeutic, or military uses ; also : a mixture (as the explosive mixture in an internal combustion engine) of such a vapor with air
3 a: something unsubstantial or transitory : phantasm b: a foolish or fanciful idea
4plural aarchaic : exhalations of bodily organs (as the stomach) held to affect the physical or mental condition b: a depressed or hysterical nervous condition

Smoke:
1 a: the gaseous products of burning materials especially of organic origin made visible by the presence of small particles of carbon b: a suspension of particles in a gas
2 a: a mass or column of smoke b: smudge
3: fume or vapor often resulting from the action of heat on moisture
4: something of little substance, permanence, or value
5: something that obscures
6 a (1): something (as a cigarette) to smoke (2): marijuana 2 b: an act of smoking tobacco ; especially : a smoking break
7 a: a pale blue b: any of the colors of smoke
8: pitches that are fastballs <if a guy's going to hit you…he certainly isn't going to throw a spitter—he gives you smoke — Tony Conigliaro>

With all due respect, I don't think it really helps to parse words. There's no arguing that there is a difference between tobacco smoke and the vapor from an e-cig. We've all heard the saying, "Where there's smoke there's fire." With an e-cig, there is no fire. But by whatever name you call it, the two substances are not the same.

Nevertheless, the way we perceive ourselves is important, I think, to our ultimate success/failure in quitting nicotine. With the discovery of e-cigs, I found it easy to quit smoking, not easy at all to give up nicotine. Since I associate the word "smoker" with tobacco and tobacco with nicotine, it's hard to see myself as anything but a smoker, even though that might not be 100% accurate. Actually, I'm a non-smoking nicotine addict, I suppose.

I agree with the person who said they never wanted to become a Nazi anti-smoker. What I'd like to say at some point is, "I'm a nicotine addict but I found something better than cigarettes. Would you like to try it?" I want to be an advocate for smokers by exposing them to the advantages of e-cigs or PVs or whatever we end up calling them. But someone shoot me if I ever do it in a judgmental way.

This is an interesting thread. I view my ecig as a controllable nicotine inhaling device. When people ask me what it is, I am tired of calling it an e-cig and then explaining what it is so I simply tell them it is a "controllable nicotine inhaling device". The next time I go to my doctor I will tell him that I do not smoke anymore and I will be sure to put a check in the correct box (which is NOT smoker).

When I am around "real" smokers now I do not like smelling their cigarettes anymore. I do not like smelling real smoke in my car anymore and I do not like smelling it off of people's clothes now that my senses have resharpened. I will always continue to be courteous and respectful of analog smokers around me and I will never complain though.

After a lot of thinking. I would never tell people (except the doctor) that I am a non-smoker. I would rather tell them I am an ex-smoker (which I do not think is the same as non-smoker) or an alternative smoker.

I was just having this discussion today with my dad. I consider that I have stopped smoking (which I just told my doctor Monday too) but not that I am a non-smoker (and God forbid, NEVER an anti-smoker LOL).

I have known people on the patch or Chantix and they say they quit smoking with the help of the patch (or Chantix or gum).

So I am going with that; I quit smoking with the help of the e-cig.

Incidentally I am starting to act like a non-smoker, I was in a car with smokers today and the smoke was bothering me, and all I could think was, "Why can't they switch to e-cigs?"

Hmmm,

I started vaping about two weeks ago and I feel like I`m still smoking because I still get nicotine and I have the smokers habits. I like being smoke-free a lot...and the e-cigarette habit is really interesting to me with all the different e-cigs, liquids and this forum, but
If I run out of juice for a day or two I`m not sure if I`ll be able to resist the analogs...

I've been tobacco-free since the end of January. I really do feel as if I've quit smoking, that I am not a smoker.

I do not, however, feel even remotely superior to smokers. I would still be a smoker if I hadn't found e-cigs, and I don't fool myself into thinking that somehow I am better than smokers or have more willpower.

And the truth is, I'm still addicted . . . I've just traded my addiction for something that I feel is less damaging to me and to those around me.

no matter how you look at it your a non smoker. just because you mimic
the act thereof it doesn't mean you are. e-cigs contain nothing of the
sort, there is no smoke......so how can you be smoking? if you need to be
technical about it then you would be steaming or atomizing, but definitely not
smoking ;)

if a child puffs one of those candy gum cigarettes where the powder comes out
the end,are they smoking? certainly not. is a person wearing the patch a smoker?
how about snus users? nicorette users ? nope,nope,nope.....just my 2c's

I didn't read all the posts, but I don't really feel like a non-smoker, even though I am. I feel like I lucked out discovering this and replacing my smoking habit. I will tell the store clerks that I haven't bought cigarettes in over a month, but I sometimes also say, "I switched" and then go on to tell them and show them my e-cig if I know they are smokers.

But, really, except for the lack of ashes and smells and other disgusting stuff, I'm still puffing away, and smoking (to me) was just the name we gave satisfying our nic addiction with cigarettes. Had we called it "puffing" or "dragging" or nicotin-ing" we'd still be using those same terms (maybe).

I act like I'm morally superior to my husband now (as a joke) because he hasn't switched over completely. As a matter of fact, I bet you he comes home in a few minutes with a new pack of camels. But, really, the truth is I'm still an addict even if I'm not a smoker.

Also, when I used the patches or gum or lozenges, I still knew I was a smoker, too. . . I was a smoker who wasn't presently smoking. I wanted to be a non-smoker, but I didn't want to suffer to be one. So, I always figured that I'd need at least several months if not more to start even considering myself a "non-smoker" in any real sense of the word. As long as I was craving cigs (no matter in what form), I thought of myself as a smoker who was abstaining.

Of course, this whole "i'm a smoker" thing could have been what fed into my three-pack a day habit. Maybe if I was able to think of myself as a non-smoker, I could have actually been one. :)

I consider myself a non-smoker. It was a point that hit home for me a couple days after getting my E-cig.

quick story..

I had not had a regular cigarette for about 48 hours, being totally smitten with my E-Cig. I took my wife out to dinner, eating a restaurant we both love. When the starter came, (french onion soup) i noticed an immediate difference in my taste buds. It was so much more tasty, i could really taste things for the first time in 15 years. For me it was the epihony moment, the E-cigs are for real, and i'll (hopefully) never smoke again ;)
