I much prefer the cottony break in taste of Cotton to Rayon, but that is gone with in about 5-10 hits... After I rewick I saturate the coils and wick fully and let sit for a couple mins. Once the coil and wick is broken in I much prefer the vape off Rayon. I can deal with the break in taste because the vape is so much better to me.

No, rayon isn't polyester... Polyester is a synthetic man-made material, rayon is basically purified cotton, nearly pure cellulose.

Ummm, no.

There is no cotton at all in Rayon. It is made from chemically treated wood pulp and is considered a semi-synthetic fiber.

For me, the cotton taste is gone within a few drags, and I can live with that.

Rayon is more difficult to get right (great flavor once you get it), not ideal in certain tanks, and IMO, a goopy mess.

Rayon is more efficient.

Use a little less than cotton and be sure it's not tight in the coil.

If you get any funny taste from rayon you have it wicked too tight.

I use rayon exclusively in everything except a Genny, which gets mesh.

Cellulose is cellulose is cellulose. Doesn't matter if it's "natural" or "synthetic," cellulose is just cellulose. To paraphrase: cellulose, by any other name, would wick as great.

Rayon and cotton are both composed primarily of cellulose fibers. The difference is that rayon, being "synthetic" can be made nearly 100% pure cellulose, whereas cotton, being a "naturally-grown" product, is also full of proteins and long-chain carbon molecules and all sorts of other "organic" stuff you don't necessarily want in there if you can avoid it.

Unfortunately it is not the Cotton, but the individual. No different than some liking sweet and others, sour.

I'm pretty much the same and finally switched to Rayon. Even it has a very short initial unpleasant effect on my flavors, but clears up much faster.
I Rarely touch a pre-made coil head anymore with the exception of my Cartomizers for on the road emergency backup.

I have tried all sorts of different cotton. Japanese organic cotton, Cotton Bacon V2.0, the cotton balls they stick in with your new tank or atomizer, etc..... But for the first several drags they all taste like I'm sucking my liquid through freshly washed bed linen. I saturate well before I seal up my decks and assemble my tanks but this taste pervades. I've even pulled tanks apart again right after filling them because I was thinking I'm getting dry hits but the cotton will still be good and saturated. This taste lasts for several good draws and sometimes doesn't go completely away for a couple of hours. Eventually it settles down and I start tasting my juice in full effect but the first several draws almost make me gag from the taste of cotton.

Let the record show I have experienced this on Kanger Subtank Minis, my Smok TFV4 Mini and a couple of clone tanks I picked up. That being said, I don't think it has anything to do with any particular tank either.

If there is one think truly dampening my vaping experience right now, it's that fresh cotton taste. Is there some way to get rid of this??

Yes.

What I do.... oh, and this is with drippers... is I usually use a strong tasting liquid after I do a fresh wick.

With a tank, I suppose you can just prime the coil with a strong tasting liquid;

This may seems like a silly suggestion, or even an insult, but it's not. Right before I build I wash my hands thoroughly then again right before wicking and again before filling ghe liquid and again when it's all said and done.
I also puff a few short drags and blow out without inhaling in the beginning.
Oh, and if I find some cotton taste too horrible, I quit using it and switch to other brand.

Rayon tastes worse than cotton to me when new. It goes away quick, but it isn't pretty IMO for the first 5 or so hits.

It is all I am using now though as I do prefer it to cotton.

As mentioned, Sally's is the place. 500 feet is $13.99 and should last the average vaper 40-50 years. The 3lb box is just idiotic as you will be long dead (even if you are a teenager now) before you finish the box. The 10ft package IS NOT RAYON, it is actually cotton.

Sorry but you have that backassards.

Rayon relaxes, cotton expands when wet.

You want as much Rayon as you can get inside the coil without deforming it.

LESS cotton, as it will Expand when wet.

I think the nasty taste at first is More Often Than Not, just one small area of wicking that isn't
wet and burns. I go to Extra efforts with coils to Be Sure they are saturated first, no power hits
and also working the voltage up from hardly any at all to the usual.

Shrouded coils I'll drip in the chimney til juice seeps out the covered vent holes of the coil shroud, Evod coils, I soak the wick then put the chimney stem in and install and vape.

It's a lot easier to burn a few drops of excess juice off than it is to get that nasty burnt wicking taste
out of a tank/coil.

That's interesting Bad Ninja. I use both KGD and rayon these days. I've found I can stuff a lot of KGD into a coil compared what I used to think I could get away with and still get a great vape from it. But not as much as I can put in with rayon. I find rayon actually compresses over time and cotton is the opposite, so if I err with either it's usually a bit less rayon than optimum vs a bit too much with cotton.

Thanks for all the input and enlightenment on rayon. I will have to get some ordered soon.
Kudos to all of you!

I hope it works out for you Willie :thumb:

I don't really get much of any 'off' taste from either KGD or rayon, but a new wick does taste a bit different for a little while than after it's broken in. Of course, the coils are super clean then too and I think that changes the taste too. Most of the time I like that difference but that's just me. When I was using different cottons I typically didn't like the first few dozen drags. I may have simply gotten used to it now or I may be better at wicking. Might just try my next re-wick with some ordinary cotton and see :)
