wait a minute, are you saying that having the same group of people make up industry, the regulatory body overseeing that industry, and the government branch overseeing the regulatory body is not a good idea? Or that industry contributing to campaigns for the government representatives that appoint and oversee the regulatory body that regulates that industry is a conflict of interest?

That's just silly.

Regulate that!
Oh, it was regulated. Building codes, and building inspectors, etc, etc.

Me, I wonder if all those people were out on that balcony to smoke because in Berkeley, you're no longer allowed to smoke in any multi-unit housing. Of course that nonsensical law also applies to "common areas such as private decks, balconies". Huh? If they're private, how can they be common areas?

Anti-smoking bylaws causing fatalities.... Who could have thought..... They obviously should be repealed until we figure out the long term effects.

Last time I met with a regulator was when my dad was selling his long island home. Dude came in to give a building inspection on the home. I was a kid. He walked around with my dad and I with his clip board in hand (late 1970s early 1980s). About 2 hours later, he started talking to my dad. My dad opened his wallet and handed him 6 - crisp 100 dollar bills. He threw the clip board sheet away and said change those outlets.. and pointed, everything else looks good. Yes. that is a true story.

Zoeller calls on FDA to protect youth from e-cigs

INDIANAPOLIS — Attorney General Greg Zoeller is calling on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to include and prohibit e-cigarettes under the Tobacco Control Act to protect youth from the addiction and adverse health effects of nicotine.

This plea is a result of growing concern as more Hoosier youths have access to e-cigarettes. The number of young people using the products has skyrocketed. In 2014, about 16 percent of high school students admitted they use the products – more than any other tobacco product used among teens. After the proposed regulations were issued, 29 attorneys general filed comments on Aug. 8, 2014, supporting the action and recommending that the regulations be strengthened in several respects. However, the public comment period closed August 2014 with no subsequent action from the FDA.As it stands, e-cigarettes remain outside the FDA’s authority to protect public health.

In a statement, the Zoeller said that after all the hard work put in across the nation to reduce youth smoking and tobacco use, he thinks that it’s “hard to believe we are willing to sit back and watch our children develop addictive smoking habits.” In October 2013, Zoeller and 40 other state attorneys general sent a letter to the FDA asking that the agency issue proposed rules and begin regulating e-cigarettes. More recently, Zoeller along with Maine Attorney General Janet Mills sent an urgent letter to the FDA, expressing their frustration at the lack of action ensuring that e-cigarettes will be regulated and not marketed to the nation’s youth. In the recent letter, Zoeller and Mills reiterated the following policy suggestions, urging the FDA to not only include e-cigarettes under the Tobacco Control Act, but also:

  • Subject e-cigarettes to the same advertising and marketing restrictions as combustible cigarettes.
  • Ban characterizing flavors.
  • Require stronger health warnings on e-cigarettes, noting that nicotine is a harmful and addictive product and e-cigarettes contain potentially harmful chemicals.
  • Prohibit all non-face-to-face sales of tobacco products to prevent youth from purchasing e-cigarettes off of the Internet.
During 2015 session, the General Assembly passed some laws that require ‘vape’ shops to be licensed and that e-cigarettes containers use child-resistant packaging. The Attorney General said in a statement that he will “continue to urge for stronger regulation of these products with addictive properties and other unknown health effects.”

BTW - Where is steve to tell us that Everything is Fine in Indiana?
I'll save some time:

"Just because he's asked for it, doesn't mean it's going to happen."
"You can't buy online, but you can still vape."
"Everyone I know uses products from BT anyway, they're perfectly happy without fruit/candy flavors."
"CR is really beautiful this time of year, I have to go, one of my ladies just messaged me."

So it's all good fun to make jokes about this, and click our teeth at the ridiculousness of it, but we're not doing anything about the heart of the matter.

This AG does not see a difference between smoking and vaping, so in his mind, all of the same rules apply. How do we open his eyes to the fact that vaping is not smoking? I don't think conceding the first point to him is the way to go about it.

Whether or not you agree with the studies about smoking, at least they exist, and to the extent that it convinced many people that smoking is harmful to your health. That is supposedly the basis for the TC regs, to help protect consumers from a harmful product.

Why do we just accept this justification for ANY regulations against vaping? There are no studies showing that vaping is harmful, at least not credible ones. Aside from the inhalation, and possible presence of nicotine, smoking and vaping are completely different.

Looks like "by public demand" FDA "will have to" put the black lungs and assorted pics and warnings on e-liquid bottles:

This is troubling

What bothers me is that when I drive down I-75 to get back and forth to work there is no signs that say driving on this highway may cause inhalation of potential dangerous chemicals as the 16 wheels belches forth a blackened cloud that makes me scramble to get my recirculating air conditioner setting on, while dodging the 16 wheeler on my right and the lady on the left that thinks she is one of the rare human creatures that is able to text/drive/listen to the radio and talk to her passenger at the same time.

Why are we so worried about kids vaping? The more kids that vape, the more money gets pumped into the American economy. Under funded schools? Have the schools initiate a "juice making" hour. The schools can sell the juice! Kids are small and have small hands - who better to make 30ml bottles? Learning the formulas would help them learn math! Understanding which flavors sell better and how much of each supply to order - economics! Learning to let the smartest kids lead the teams - management! Letting the creative kids make the labels - art! Watching the occasional dumb kid drop a 55 gallon drum on himself - safety, science and natural selection! Letting the sport kids load and unload everything - physical fitness! Using a few of the hot moms in promotional materials - advertising and self esteem! There is no downside to attracting kids to vaping. Except stupid reactionary "we must save the kids from imaginary dangers" adults who some how slipped through the natural selection process.

And we all know that being AG is prime qualification for making public health recommendations.

...

What do you Suggest we do then?

Remember, we Don't have Years anymore. We probably have less than 6 Weeks.
