I recently got a dse 905. It is a Nomads (that is what is says on the box) made in May 2010. I read up here about probs w/ older models but thought I would give the newer ones a try.

Hey, I like this thing! But about a week after it came the LED stopped working. I don't mind that because it was kinda bright anyway. It works great other than that. I emailed my supplier and they said I could send it back. I would rather keep it if ??? there is not some safety, or other, reason for having the LED. Other mods have no led. It does come w/ unprotected 14500 batts.

Should I send it back?

I read somewhere that protected batts would not fit but not sure that is true.

Not sure about what the best choice would be on whether or not to return it. Really a matter of personal choice I suppose. Then again if you aren't sure why the LED went out all of a sudden whose to say if you may soon have further issues with it or not.

As for the batteries both the AW and Trustfire protected 14500s fit just fine in the 905 I have here.

Thanks for the input Thy! I thought about the "further issues" thing. It has been over a week now since the led went out. It is still working fine. The reason I would like to keep it is that I like the no LED deal. I was thinking about asking at the forum if there was a way to turn it off. But, I was worried that I would not know when the batts are getting too low and that this might be a safety issue. Or, might cause the bats to not last as long. I change batts each day but as they get older this may not be soon enough?

Should I get some protected batts. If so, what are the best and where is a good place to get them?

I am using 901 attys and 808 cartos w/ a carto adapter. They both work fine but the flavor from the 901s might be a bit better. What do you other 905 users use?

Yeah I would definitely suggest using protected ones whenever possible. I haven't done a lot of research into prices as I have yet to need to buy any other than what came with my units. I know a lot of people use Lighthound for batteries. Provape also carries the 14500 AW & Trustfires. I've never had a problem with either of those brands myself and they seem to be the most common along with the Ultrafires.

I felt the tingle and thought it was just me, checked it out more closely and noticed... it was bad. Not enough to shock somebody but enough to let you know that something's not right.

I never had the LED dying out issue but I had a black one and, after it got a few scratches, I decided to sand the paint off of it. I continued to use it without any issues. A short while later I got my first Ttip and when I went to use it I experienced the same issue with the tingling.

I ended up asking Scottbee his thoughts on it and this is what he had to say :

I don't have a DSE-905 and have never taken one apart.... but I am very familiar with what you are talking about and I know what causes it. And.... you will have this problem with cartomizers too!

My strong guess would be is that the atty connector for the DSE-905 is electrically insulated from the main body (unlike an eGo or a KR808D-1, or a 510.. 901 and etc..). When they do this.. and I don't personally like the idea.... they connect the positive pole of the battery directly to the center pole on the atty, and use the button to "switch" the ground.. in other words, to disconnect and reconnect the outer casing "ground" of the body to the outer pole on the atty.

Now that you have removed the paint, you have removed the insulation from the body of the unit. Your hand is in direct contact with the body.. which is one side of the circuit... and your tongue/lip is on the outer case of the atty.. the other side of the circuit. Your body completes the circuit.

If my hypothesis is correct, the "tingling" should come and go as you press the button.

If I'm wrong.. it won't change when you push the button.. and it just means that the atty connector is insulated and the internal wiring is reversed.
And it turned out he was correct. No tingle unless pushing the button and if I put a napkin between my hand and the unit the tingle was no longer there.

I've been meaning to clear coat it ever since but haven't gotten around to it yet since I haven't been using the unit.

This may sound like a silly question but is the positive end of the batt pointing towards the atty? Reversing the polarity of the batt will cause the LED not to work. This is something folks have found out and some do this on purpose.

A question though, by doing this (reversing the batt) does it disable the protection circuit as well?

Thanks Thy! That Scott is a smart dude. And so are you for asking him. It could be the paint on Dy's silver 905 is not much insulation? It all looks like metal to me.

And thanks OldCoot. I will check that out.

Hmm, what is the very best 14500 protected?

Switched, I do have the batt w/ the + nipple end pointing towards the atty. Good question to ask though. I was not sure what would happen if it was turned wrong. Sooo, someone besides me likes the LED off. I would have been scared to do it. And yes, it sure might make other things not work right. Hmm, maybe my protection is not working since the LED is not?

Ok, I have now read around here that unprotected batts may be safer that protected ones. I have been using protected Trustfire batts w/ my 905 that may not longer have it's protective stuff and all is fine... for now but...? What scares me is that there are no vents on the 905.
Joe
That is bogus. There is such a thing as safer chemistry, but even batt U says safer chemistry should also have protection. When in doubt, use protected batteries.

The difference between the two: safer chemistry = vent without fire. LI Ion = vent with fire and may actually explode. We are vaping what boils down to pipe bombs, I feel safer with protected batteries.

If anything else it is an added measure of safety. I recently had a runaway that got avoided because of no panic and thanks to previously acquired knowledge. I was using LifePos at the time.
