How could you SAY such a horrible thing! She's obviously completely inexperienced with the icky cigarette thingies!

[Thanks a lot, you made me scrub the clip to extract some thumbnails... 8-o:mad:]

This is so interesting. I actually watched the wretched video, the poor doc trying to say something he had little knowledge about, but I was absolutely fascinated by the way she grabbed that cig. Like she's been doing it all her life. Look, I'm a smoker, I'm really good at that. You noticed and I noticed the same thing: no nonsmoker holds a cig like that, like it's a part of your hand. Second nature. It takes years to learn how to do this right. Don't believe me? Go to the other video with those four docs and see how they hold a cigarette--like it's gonna explode in their hands. Oh, the holier than thou, the closet smokers. The reformed smokers. The smoking police. God help us.

I'm torn by a sense of doubt - dread?

As I sat down and scrolled through your quote of the images I flashed on a possibility.

Before I suggest it, let me say I wholeheartedly agree with you. In fact, it's the reason I can't and won't use manual batteries. I need the two-finger hold. Something I practiced to get right and is ingrained more than any habit I can think of. Anything else feels entirely alien.

That said - could she be feeling the familiarity of a pen/pencil?

The "dread" comes from not wanting to wrongfully "convict" in the court of forum opinion.

Kat notes above the lip-licking. I did catch that which suggests my position as devil's advocate is ill-founded.

I'm going with Drozd's take, which seems to echo your final observation.

And that first image is pretty dam.ning. She actually would have had some style and flash to her smoking, something that doesn't come naturally in my opinion - it's deliberately practiced.

Adrenalynn,

I appreciate your doubts and sense of fairness. I don't feel that we are condemning her as it were. Smoking is not a crime and we're not exactly writing an expose and sending it to the Enquirer or the NYT. We're chatting. I really don't much care if she smokes or used to smoke. I smoke. I just found it striking that at least three other people made the same observation. You know how smokers hold a cigarette in their hand and forget about it? It's just there, a part of you, I'm not explaining it well. I used to direct in my previous life and occasionally you had an actor who didn't smoke, but had to learn because his character smoked. It was the hardest thing on earth to teach a nonsmoker how to deal with a cigarette so that it would feel and look natural. And that was what I expected from her, a nonsmoker trying to deal with an unfamiliar prop. If she never smoked, she's got some talent.

:sleep:There are other clues. When she talks about her friends who swear by the patches and she touches her arm, it's so instinctive, so protective, so self-soothing. Body language. Drozd saw it, an alcoholic asked to hold somebody's drink. Then she talks about holding pens or pencils and playing with them to satisfy that hand to mouth fixation, she does it, and she does is so well. Nonsmokers don't play with their pencils like that. This is quitting smoking 101. That's what they teach you. Grab a pencil and pretend it's a cig. Yeah, right.

I don't wish to besmirch her either, I actually find her quite pleasant, bit too perky for me. I saw a show or two when she was on the Foodnetwork. I didn't know she had a talk show on network TV... Goes to show you how much I know. If she's struggling, I feel sorry for her. I agree with you that if she really used to be a smoker, she should have said so. Would have made for a much better television, if nothing else. But that's just a director in me looking for a drama.

yeah--i agree gals. & before i got down to your last post there, 'lynn, it was that first image that did it for me. that's the look of a gal who has had a heated discussion with a cig in her hands...

joe camel, i don't think she's ugly, but unfortunately her voice/manner are so imprinted in my brain that even stills bother me. tho more tolerable than video. ;) i used to work with a woman (who i also disliked, strongly) who had a very similar voice and appearance so i essentially spent 2 years having that negative association driven home. *shudders*

and, echoing katya, the reformed smokers and the closet smokers are the worst. though of the two groups, it's the closet smokers that irritate me more. used to have a pal who wouldn't take smoke breaks with me in front of restaurants, etc, even if it was just us two--but as soon as we were in my car she was bumming a smoke. (didn't want to carry them around, yanno. )

I haven't watched the show or found the desire to click play on the posted videos so I'll take your word for it. :)

Well, after reading some of the posts, I thought the clip was going to be a lot worse. Not too bad. The positive spin by the doc was nice.

Generally can't stand RR...or any of the Oprah spin-offs.

The way she held the ecig definitely caught my eye. She's a pro, or an ex-pro...not that I care, it's just funny. As someone else said, the worst...the holier than thou ex-smoker/ closet smoker.

Overall, the more positive exposure that PV's get, the better.

I posted a message on her board and I'll update if they return an e-mail or call. Why are nic patches so much better in her eyes than e-cigs? They may edit my listing but I just wanted her to know that she should not throw stones unless she has tried it. I also let her know that we have a support group here, and she could come and join anytime she likes.

Not as hot as Giada
Giada is beautiful...but she has pancake booty, ruins the whole thing I swear...

Giada has a weird bobblehead thing going on that's really off-putting. Whenever I flip past her show, it looks like she's going to topple over.
She seems like a decent cook, though.

Wow, you guys are sharp - I never would have caught that!

I just did a quick google search for 'Rachel Ray smoker' and found quite a few mentions of on blogs and what not of people spotting her smoking. Not sure if she still does (probably not), most of the reports were from 2006 and 2007, but seems she used to have quite the habit and (understandably) kept it hidden for the most part.

Here's an article where her publicist is claiming she doesn't smoke....

And the ajoining picture...

I'm sure she was just holding that cigarette for the camera guy who had his hands full at the time.
