I'm game, but -- mind you I've never had the pleasure of being an inmate -- I'd be too concerned about appearances to use an e-cig in prison. I mean, I get comments from smokers like "I wouldn't be caught dead with that prissy thing" and "...They're more socially acceptable in Europe". I'd be out in the yard smoking analogs like the rest if it helps me avoid any of the... anything.

its not only a blunt or poking type weapon.
there are a lot of 'jailhouse' applications for a power source, metal, plastic, wires and potentially blinding liquids.
is nicotine (or flavoring) combustible or explosive if concentrated?
and then you have the e-liquid black market.
"hey, man.. i got 36. you need some 36?"
and how would it be standardized?
cartos-tanks-clearos-whatevers?
allow flavors or just tobacco or menthol?

this sounds like a big can of worms to me.
someones gonna end up getting murdered for some Zombie Apocalypse or pack of cartos.

for the record: i've never been an inmate but, i have a mcguyver kind of mind & i could certainly make something dangerous out of a gas station ecig - let alone an X2, carto & tank full of liquid.
just sayin.. not really a good idea from a security/health & welfare point of view.

The consensus is, they can be fashioned into weapons. The batteries can be used for who knows what. If you've ever watched Lockup, you realize prisoners have a LOT of time on their hands, and find ingenious ways of perverting any object into a weapon.

I saw one episode where an inmate used plastic drink cups, lit them on fire with a lighter, twisted the melting plastic into a point, and then quenched it in the toilet bowl. Once he took it out, it was a solid stabbing weapon. Totally and 100% lethal.

If they can turn plastic drink cups into shanks, imagine what they could do with a metal or stainless steel, or hell, even a wood, mod, apv, or any vape of any kind.

you could cause a battery to explode with the wire out of a carto.
crimp it a few times at certain intervals & you could effectively have a time delayed fuse.
and thats just off the top of my head.
metal tube, potentially explosive liquid, battery with on/off switch, plastic projectile - you could probably shoot someone with an X2, carto tank with driptip.
it might take a minute to build up critical pressure but, a homemade steampunk gun could be quite deadly.

If the only 'reason' they're not currently allowed to smoke i the health factor it would definitely make sense.

You can't smoke outside in prison? It's not like Shawshank Redemption?

The op said jail not prison so that' what I based it on. In maricopa county jails (az) smoking is prohibited whereas in the az prison system it's allowed. Maricopa detention officers aren't even allowed to smoke in the facilities.

Now I know this will start a lot of commotion, but I was wondering if inmates should be allowed to purchise e cigs off commersery. It could turn them onto a more relaxed state of mind insteade of having a constent craving for something. It would help turning more people onto not.smoke analogs. Just a thought.

God no. A portable source of power that can conceivably turned into a weapon? If we're worried about relaxing their minds, let's just give them all prozac. :p
