See pictures. The "box" is a 4 AA battery holder with cover. It came with it's own on/off switch and wiring. Easy simple mod. The holder contains 4 AA NiMH batteries, I simply took a really poorly performing DSE901 atomizer, soldered the red lead to the centre post, the black to the outer ring where the screw threads are, and "assemble" it with a strip of duct tape. Taadaa!! It's easy to hold in my right hand and operate the switch, it's not a push button switch, but a slide switch. It's not much of a hassle, I just activate it with my thumb. Since I already had the batteries and soldering iron, this was a grand total of 5 bucks! And as imagined, nice clouds of nico-vapour!!! mmmm mmmm good!

Ah, it's easy to unsolder and do another one. I tried using the battery connector from a dead battery so I could just uncrew it, but I melted the grommet between the contacts and it shorts out. I've got my good and bad atomizers separated. Good ones for e-cig use, bad ones for my monstrosity.

IT'S ALLLLLLIIIIVVVVE!!

haha what happens when that atomizer dies! hey at least it's workin!

I saw that model after I made mine, I swear your honour!! They read my thoughts as I slept :D Next step will be....As soon as I have another dead battery, I'm gonna drill a hole in the housing of my battery holder, remove the excess wiring, and epoxy the battery connector right into it.

But the best part with this setup is, I can take the tape off and dunk the atomizer in water and switch it on, and boil out the gunk from the inside. I did that this morning and it did pick up a bit in performance.

crikey !! nice work , but don't let Ludo see these or you may find yourselves in court for copyright infringements of Janty's new 2009 model :p

Hey, youfillintheblank! Where did you buy that box? I am using exactly the same box for my USB modded pen-types here in Hungary. It is so cheap (about 80 cents here) that I thought it is made somewhere here in Hungary.

Anyway, my USB modded pen-types are the prettiest ones: there is no switch on them, just the USB cable, by which they can be connected either to an USB port or to that box containing four NiMH batteries :)

at the store "The source" in Canada. Says made in china, so who knows. Share some pictures! If it has no switch, what activates it?

If it has no switch, what activates it?
Here are some pics.
You can also see how I activate it: by turning the atomiser slightly.
There is a multifuse resistor inside the battery housing (in series with the supply) that protects the atomiser and also the batteries to some extent, if the e-cig were left "ON" accidentally. It also protects the filling material of the cartridge against burning in normal use. No more burned taste with the USB mod :)

Edit:
I would correct now: "protects the atomiser to some extent". Because chances are that I killed my atomiser with a totally dried-out cartridge the moment I sent this post. Dry cartridges are vicious :(

Holy crap Barry!! Let's hope yours and mine never meet up somewhere. The whole neighbourhood will be praying that there's no children. God knows where we would send them to school.

I am frightened to be seen on the street with mine, sooner or later some's gonna call out the anti terrorist squad..........................

Can you imagine the conversation.....

"Hello, this is the Anti-Terrorist hotline, all our agents are busy at the moment but your call is very important to us - please hold the line"

5 minutes of the 1812 overture, (the bit with the explosions) played on a Rolf Harris Stylophone...........
..............
"Hello, this is A.T. agent Shootamded - get down on your stomach, put your hands on your head and state your business and make it snappy, I still have 5 do-nuts and a coffee to get through."

"Ah, Good morning Agent Shootemded - I wish to report a suspicious character carrying a suspicious object..."

"Describe the object!!"

"Mmm, lets see now, It's about 3" x 2", has a bunch of wires and some batteries, and - OH MY GOD - ONE OF THE WIRES IS RED!.."

OK, calm down sir - what else do you see..?"

"Well, there's a long black tube sticking out of one end, a black push button switch on the other end, and it's all held together with rubber bands"

"Well, it Certainly sounds like an IED Sir, please describe the suspect.."

"he's short, wearing a red shirt, blue checked bedroom slippers, brown trousers and blue braces - he's very old and very ugly - with a large hooked nose"

"That sounds like one of our 'most wanted' - a very dangerous man called 'Iva Bin Fishin' - please remain where you are and observe him carefully. I'll get 17 of my best operators there immediately and we'll disable him with 17 .22 soft points to the head - Oh, and make sure that you identify yourself to my operators by holding a large placard above your head containing the words - 'I AM NOT A TERRORIST - I DO NOT HAVE A BOMB!'....."

".......OH MY GOD! he's lifted the device up to face level, he appears to have his thumb on the button - AND THERE IS SMOKE COMING FROM IT - WHAT SHOULD I DO...?

"I suggest Sir, that you get down on the floor, get into a tight foetal position, push your head as far between your knees as you can and kiss your ... goodbye....
Do Have a nice day and we'll see you when we are sure that the scene is safe."

Very interesting! So many of us have that "I can make it better" guy in us. I had a wacky idea to make one with a hand crank generator from a battery-less flashlight. I could see it now, just like BarryK with his e-cig-detonator, I would get the STRANGEST looks with that in public.

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a perpetual motion e-cig! Like Rolex watches, they would wind themselves by your body movements. Keep it in your pocket while walking around getting ready for the day and it's good for 4 hours! YES! I call on Madog to try this one.

:lol:For this one you may want to put it on an armband like the ipod. People may think you are charging more than just an ecig with all that movement in your pocket.;)
