A quick update. Bought a small torch about a week ago and torched the heck out of the Ekowool. It improved greatly (burning dog hair taste is gone :p )but there is still either a little flavor muting or slight taste there, especially in the beginning. I'm using it but still not entirely thrilled with it. Will probably stick to regular silica or organic cotton. At least it got better - the glass is half full.

Cheers,
Steve

I'm using a Kayfun Lite with a 4.5ml tank capacity. Something I've noticed in my short span of DIY'ing is my cotton wicks remain almost Lilly White even after 3-4 tank refills, so that's 12-18mls of juice through one cotton wick. The store bought stuff I had been trying gunked up my wick even at a few mls.

I keep seeing this KAYFUN LITE popping up in these threads. I did a little research and got the manual on it and now its got me courious. Can you tell me about this and how it vapes compared to the Kanger T3's. I've seen some clones for very cheap on ebay thay look exactly the same construction wise and I'm tempted.

I'm looking at them too Danny, very interested indeed. I'd love to be able to get an original (non-clone) but at this time of year that's going to be hard to swing.

........ I made the coil using the sewing needle method and didn't remove it until it was done .........

I'd suggest trying a little bigger id coil, regardless of what you wick it with. If you have a small allen key, or a 1.5mm drill bit or a 1/16th inch drill bit or anything around 1/16th inch od then give that a try.

I had the sewing needle going through the middle of 2mm Ekowool (bigger than 2mm standard silica). I believe it's plenty big enough, 5 wraps with 32g Kanthal is giving me 2.2 ohms. I didn't make it by just wrapping it around a sewing needle. Happy Vaping :toast:

I bought a very inexpensive torch from Harbor Freight Tools. It cost $8.99 plus tax at my local store. I use Zippo brand or similar canned butane to refill it from the bottom.

I'm even able to use it one-handed and it gets very hot! Adjustable gas flow and air adjustment to get the hottest flame possible.

I torch my Ekowool 'till it gets white hot. I takes about 10 seconds or so, but I believe getting it white hot really eliminates any odor issues, plus it make the wick very stiff making it easier to cut and wrap coils around it. I have not had ANY off-taste or odors doing it this way.
This torch is able to get up to 2000 F.

I have no aversions to clones, in fact I use my Hcigar Nemesis everyday and I love that thing...but as for the Kayfun clones, that may be a different matter. I can't say either way as far as the quality of it's clones but I can tell you that the Kayfun Lite is the pinnacle in design/flavor and consistency. I've used protanks, davide's, iclears, t3's and I can tell you the difference is hard to even comprehend. They are pricey buggers but worth every cent and then some. I spent as much on the aforementioned devices that I could have bought a KFL easily and have been done with it.

If you looked at the user manual you can see from the design the way juice is served to the wicks through the juice channels, the KFL is designed to create a vacuum within the tank. What's so amazing is you never have any degeneration in taste, you'll never get a dry or hot hit (unless you run it slap out of juice), you'll never get the fouls taste so common with the PT"S of a gummed up, gunked up nasty tasting wick.

I just got sick of buying replacement heads for our PT's and started rebuilding them and even then the vape was mediocre at best on a good day and degenerated very quickly...it's wasn't until I bought the KFL that I realized the difference was of another world. A 5/64 drill bit, 28-30 gauge kanthal wire, 8-9 wraps for a micro-coil @ 1.8ohms, pop in a cotton wick and that's it. I've used the same coil for way over a month and the only reason I would replace it was out of boredom and just wanted to wrap another with a different ohm. About the only maintenance I do is to change out my cotton wick every now and then. I normally won't even change the wick when I change flavors, I'll just vape it down low and fill it up with another flavor and keep trucking. Hell mixing juice flavors doesn't scare me, that's what we do anyway, it doesn't take but a few drags till the new juice takes over anyway.

But to make an already long story a little longer. The KFL is the best investment I've made. You'll be hard-pressed to find any Kayfun owner that doesn't absolutely love this device and if you find anyone that doesn't, I'll guarantee you, it's not the device but user error.

I started using micro coils on my evods with a cotton wick and the flavor is night and day.Tons of flavor and vapor and none of the scratchyness I got from silica.
Dannyv45 I have to agree with Blueser I have a KFL+ clone from EHPro and it is awesome. simple to build simple to fill great flavor and it's nit fiddley.

Yes I know what you mean. At 70 to 90 a pop thats a lot of cash. I kinda like the 19.00 price tag on the clones on ebay. the problem is I like carrying a lot of flavors with me as I switch often throughout the day thats why I like the T3's there fairly reasonable pricewise. But for my main vape I think the kayfun would be worth it.

Thank you for the detailed information. That convinced me to pull the trigger on it. Should be here in a week or 2. I'm going to PM you just to have you in my mail list in case I need some setup advice. Thanks again for the great info.

Well this is interesting. rocket kayfun clone for 12.49. Just ordered the same one for 19.00 on ebay.

Kayfun 3.1 Clone, Rocket Rebuildable Atomizer Kit (Better than Dream BT804)

They seem to be getting very good reviews.

Fastech also has them for the same price.

As I stated, I can't attest to the quality of a clone. The original that I have is made in Germany. It is precision made. But you know the old saying that is normally true..."you get what you pay for".. hopefully everything will work out fine. Just make sure you have wire on hand. I buy mine from Temco kanthal a1....and sterile rolled cotton from CVS pharmacy

Yep thats why I bought both the rocket and the kayfun clone. The kayfun clone from fasttech has gotten rave reviews and the rocket has gotten decent reviews. It's far to out of my price range to get the original. I have a nice full roll of kanthal 32awg A1 which is by temco and plenty of sterile cotton roll (also from CVS) and 2mm silica so I'll try both. I haven't tried cotton so I gather I just take a bit of it roll it to about 2mm and coil around it using an 18gauge needle as I did the silica?

Do you micro wind it (8 - 10 wraps)?

I've been reading quite a bit about the original which everyone loves and the clones. Seems like the clones can be hit and miss. I really want an original but am going to have to save up for it. Seems like in the end I'll know its all stainless with quality craftsmanship.

If I know me, I would buy a clone, be somewhat unhappy and end up buying the original somewhere down the line anyway (finances withstanding). I just keep telling myself I need to be patient, unfortunately patience isn't always my strong suit lol

Cheers,
Steve

Danny- I've got a couple of the rockets. Once you figure out how to get a good wick and coil installed correctly you will love the flavor you get. I use mine at home only as they don't like traveling (will leak out of airhole for me) but they really give a nice vape.

Thanks for the info can't wait for them to arrive. I don't think I'll be traveling with it because it's so bulky so it should be good for home.
