Yes. Building (and DIY liquid) was never about saving money for me.
I can't say I'm not too serious about saving money either. I just created the last 30 days report of my vaping expenses and I've spent $638.49 so far. And nothing there was really necessary, unless the FDA bans vaping in the near future (then it was worth every penny). ;)

And while building your own builds was always thought of as a more flavorful vape. But I believe this is changing. As some of the coil heads now rival building your own. I believe things started changing with the introduction of vertical coil heads. Then they came out with dual bore, tri, and quad vertical coils (and even more). And some claim that mesh coils even beats those vertical coils for flavor. I never tried mesh coils yet, but I am seriously considering it. ;)

Chimney coils were always a very flavorful build, just a PiTA to keep the wraps tight around them. Encasing them in a metal shell like the coil heads do, solves that problem perfectly.

You really should try mesh drop in coils, grab a FreeMax Mesh Pro with the triple mesh head and your Crown coils will gather dust. ;)

Do the new mesh coils do TC? Unlikely we will see any in Ti? So off my radar :(

Sitting down, facing forward.
I'll admit to being a skin flint. I started re-building way back in my cig-a-like days to keep costs down. Can't believe I used kanthal and silica, how quaint! Then I got into DIY more to avoid not being able to get my favorite flavor because the supplier would run out without warning and it would take months for them to restock.

Now, when I look at the number of re-builds I do to keep two of us vaping and add in the liter or so of liquid we use in a month I know, for certain, I'm saving a fair amount of money. Plus there's the satisfaction of building the mods, themselves, rebuilding the tanks and then vaping a liquid I mixed, myself.

I bet! The thing about those Crown coil heads that I really like is I also bought the optional RBA for those and I thought I would build my own and do better. Well I tried many times with those RBAs and those UWell coil heads are just better for flavor. If those RBAs were a bit larger inside, I think I would have a shot at building a better coil. :)

Strangely enough, you are the second person who told me this today. I guess I'd better add that one to my shopping list. ;)

For me, it was all about one very specific thing: Not being dependent (or even becoming accustomed to) anything that could get banned.

Back when I learned to build, the results were consistently better than anything that could be bought in a store. That may or may not be true anymore; doesn't matter. I'm happy with my vape, and I don't need or want anything different or "better"

Most mesh are either Kanthal or Ni80 I believe. There are some SS mesh though. But hear tell that mesh is a real bear to get them to behave with TC. Maybe Replay can handle this?

Titanium mesh? I haven't seen any. But I see no reason why not. If the demand for them becomes greater, they'll be here. ;)

True, but I do both coil heads and build my own. So I got both bases covered. ;)

You know what is weird, same here. You know what is weirder? I am currently playing around with a Geek Vape IM1 vertical Kanthal coil head (which I would have said in the past never in a million years) and you know what? It ain't that bad, in fact it is really quite good.
how quaint!
Oddly enough when I hear the word quaint, I think of that Star Trek movie, the one with the whales. Where they travel to our present to get a whale. And Scotty is using a computer from our present. And he asks the PC something and it doesn't respond back. No Siri or Alexa, yet. And Curt says try this and points to the mouse. And Scotty says how quaint and picks it up and talks into it like a mic. That doesn't work either. So Scotty uses the keyboard and his fingers are flying a thousand miles an hour.

Back in the R91 and Taifun days thats all I did was vertical builds. I bought longer screws and cut some spacers off of some skinny SS tubing for the screw on the top side of the coil. Using a drill bit to maintain the coil shape, Id wrap a string of hemp (pre-rayon days) tight around the coil to keep good wick contact, then put the chimney on and fill the void with fluffed hemp, then pull out the drillbit. Worked like a charm, was easily the best vape I could find back in those days. Like a carto from hell.

Back when I learned to build, the results were consistently better than anything that could be bought in a store. That may or may not be true anymore; doesn't matter. I'm happy with my vape, and I don't need or want anything different or "better"

That first month or two I wasted boatloads of money trying different juices, and finding most of them unpalatable. Living in an area that had no vape shops within 100 miles at the time, my only choice was potluck via mailorder, I wasted a bunch of $$ on juice that got dumped down the drain.

So within 2 months of starting vaping I learned how to DIY juice primarily because of the tremendous cost savings, and secondarily because of the ability to customize the juice to suit my taste. I still dumped a bunch of juice down the drain during my learning curve, but at least it was a 90% less expensive than store bought.

Then I started reading up on the whole Fed thing, and the first round of seizures that got made back in 2009, and all the activity after that. It was then that I became determined to become self sufficient.

First I learned how to build Mods, starting with the Altoid Tin type and growing from there.
Then I learned how to rebuild coils.

The one thing I still lack is the ability to build an atty from scratch (no CNC machine), so I stockpiled those.

I havent bought more than 1 commercial mod in the last several years. I havent bought store juice in at least 5 years. I havent bought any commercial coil cartridges in the last 4 years.

Nice! I never tried a chimney build on a Kayfun or Taifun, the long screw and spacer was pure genius!
My AGA-T7 had different posts heights so you could put a chimney coil in it quite easily, but the thing leaked so bad. Also the single hole 3mm fill port on the top was basically useless.

I made a few attemps at AMDTrucking's Rose V2 chimney build, but never could get the wicking tight enough to the coil. I was a new Rayonati at the time and I'd be damned if there wasn't an atty I couldn't get Rayon working in, should have just used the KGD and been done with it.

Ah yes the degummed hemp... Great for juice that had a nutty flavor profile. ;)

Fond memories of a time when one couldn't wait for the next Busardo video to drop and that bellend from Joisy was an unknown.

Once I don't know what I was thinking of while building a coil for a RBA. I had a common round wire horizontal coil in there like usual, but I wicked it totally differently. No wick through the center, but instead the wicking laid horizontally around the horizontal coil. So from the side view it looked like this... (O) and went 360° around the coil in a disk shape with a rectangle hole in the center for the horizontal coil.

The airflow came from the bottom and through the coil and up to the chimney. I didn't really plan on it that way, but it just ended up that way when trying something else when I was very tired late one night. I thought what the hell, just juice it and see what happens.

And it had outstanding flavor for a horizontal build! And that coil just lasted and lasted. Like it was sort of was self cleaning or something. When it came time to rebuild that one, my second attempt vaped like crap. I dunno, wicking too loose or too tight or something. So I went back to the standard way of building horizontal coils. Maybe I should have tried it a third time.

2 FreeMax Mesh Pro tanks with 2 triple mesh packs in the mail. ;)
