Blocking Windows Updates
I've been doing pretty well from keeping Windows updates from my four Windows 10 machines. This one, Microsoft snuck 1903 on it and this one is ok with it. I've been toggling off Windows Update in services. Although I noticed that Windows will reenable it during boot and sometimes coming out of sleep. That is how Microsoft snuck 1903 on this one.
I thought if I only knew what URLs Windows 10 uses for updates. So I googled it and came up with this:
windowsupdate.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
*.update.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.com
download.windowsupdate.com
download.microsoft.com
*.download.windowsupdate.com
wustat.windows.com
ntservicepack.microsoft.com
*.mp.microsoft.com
So I blocked them. And so far everything is running very smoothly. And the Windows Update service hasn't reenabled itself either. I did reboot and it popped up a setup like screen like Windows was just freshly installed. But one option was skip for later (wish I had taken a screen shot now.) and I clicked on it and then the desktop appeared like nothing happened.
My hunch is that was Windows phoning home to check to see if this copy is authentic. Isn't there a time limit before Windows refuses to go to the desktop if it can't be check? With Windows 8, I thought it was 30 days. With Windows 10 I dunno. I rebooted again and it still goes straight to the desktop. Under Windows Info everything looks fine.
