They're going to have to raid retirement homes to find Cobol programmers and good luck finding enough to fix the mess. Imagine how many lines of useless code is in those programs by now, after 40 or 50 years of "tinkering". Our tax dollars hardly work.

That is interesting since there is a story of a man posting online from '99 through '01 who claimed to be from 2036.

(John) Titor claimed to be an American soldier from 2036, based in Tampa, Florida. He was assigned to a governmental time-travel project, and sent back to 1975 to retrieve an IBM 5100 computer, which he said was needed to debug various legacy computer programs in 2036 – a possible reference to the UNIX year 2038 problem. The IBM 5100 runs the APL and BASIC programming languages.

Yeah kind of far fetched story I know. Worse is he also stated while time travel is possible in the future, you could only travel back to another timeline. Which isn't exact as his own. So things that happened in his history, might not become our future. Anyway when John said they were using code from the 70's, still in 2036. It sounded really crazy back in 2000. But now it is 2020 and they are still using that ancient code and only 16 more years till 2036... well... it doesn't sound that crazy anymore.

working on the systems back then to make sure the year 2000 wouldn't crash everything
Hah! It was the first, most wordy, strict language I ever learned. Some damn fields/definitions had to start in specific columns. I/we were fixing Y2K problems from the mid 80's. My Director, an ex IBM guy had run into the problems when actuaries were working life insurance stuff (and mortgages) when future dates hit into year 2000.

While I have posted a picture of this before I am getting quite a bit of use out of it lately.
Ebay box, $10.50 DNA75 board, 3 cell LiPo wired parallel. Voltage drop is way less than a single 18650.
Total cost including Ulton TGT4 with shipping not included...about $45. Built by one of our members.

    The mod was a gift.

    Sitting down, facing forward.
I just acquired a USB external 1.44 floppy drive, I'm not sure if I still have any discs. I'm styling now.
(someone discarded it where I work)

I still have a tower, used for a backup server storing backups, with a 1.44 floppy drive in it. In fact I still have it in the boot sequence.

Thats been my standard mod for years, ever since Evolv designed it. The Hanamodz dude sold quite a few of the clone enclosures to me, best money ever spent.

I still have these with built in floppy drives.

2 '93 Compaq Concerto (both still running Windows 3.1 for Pen)
    2 '99 Toshiba 2595XDVD (one running Windows 98SE and one Windows 2000)

WOW, I love it. I would never have left DRDOS 3.3, WordStar 5.0, Borland Reflex database and Lotus 123 had not some legal research software I used quit supporting DOS. I have not enjoyed computers since my adopting Windows 2000. The computers seemed to be less mine and more Microsoft's merely granting me permission to use the machine under their terms and conditions.

It's my last OG VTC5, it has sentimental value :) J/K I'l rewrap it next charge :)
Those are some of the most awesome batteries ever made. I have some from early 2014 that are still in service. Mind you, they've been used lightly (0.75Ω) in my "breakfast" rather than my ADV mod, but they still hold 4.18-4.19V after charging, and 0.2C discharge tests last summer show them still having ~90% of their rated 2600 mAh capacity.
