Sitting down, facing forward.
I don't know, without my basement I wouldn't have anywhere for the drill press, miter saw, and the workbench where I, occasionally, build my mods! We're pretty lucky in terms of water/dampness down there. The soil here is sandy down to at least 15 feet so it drains well, plus we're on the highest part of a small rise. I also put two coats of water proofing paint on the poured foundation and sealed the floor. The Bilco was leaking at one corner, but that was a crack in the plaster on top of the outer flange of the door. I fixed that by filling then a few coats of rubberized paint under the finish paint.

No full basements here unless you have lots of dynamite handy. 1/2 basements are possible if you build on a steep hillside, plenty of those around here. Even then, most of those those are not truly subterranean. About the only thing underground here are storm shelters and most of them are dug on steep hillsides as far in as possible then the rest is buried. Ours was done that way back in the mid 1900's. Rock walls, leaks and creepy. My wife won't use it unless I go in first and beat down the snakes:lol:

Makes me think of a funny (not for the builder) story. One day I got a call from one of my custom home builders. He was informing me that a project was cancelled. Said he got a call one day from his excavator that he had hit cheese and it stunk. Stunned he went there and sure enough they hit cheese. They tried to remove it but after taking 5 dump trucks worth to the dump decided to scratch the dirt off to see the extent. It was huge. Turns out the land was previously owned by Kraft and they burried the not usable batches etc there. The State determined that at the time they did it many decades ago there was not anything illegal done. During mediation Kraft bought the property from the owner at an inflated rate to avoid more bad publicity. So when someone talks about this or that being a problem with a site he has the "topper" story.

You know in some cultures that cheese might have been worth a ton of money.

I'm still laughing at the cheese & Willie's comment.

Btw Willie I have this favorite snap-on ratchet screwdriver that the ratchet part seems to be failing, its the kind that you can take the bit fitting off & reverse it for the smaller size... Can I just put some grease down there?

Even if it was made by Kraft? I think calling the stuff they sell "cheese" is being pretty kind, so ponder what the stuff they decided to bury must be like!

A few drops of penitrating oil is what I would try first. I have three of those, if crud works it's way inside it can "screw" them up. :) If your's is the same as mine, on the side of the selector (the right or left selector) there will be a small section with a cutout with two prongs sticking out, those are the ends of a circle clip, squeeze them together and it will come apart but do it over a big bench covered with a towel, tiny parts can fall out, springs, a pair of tiny ball bearings (if I remember right?) and a ratchet pawl. I wouldn't take it apart unless it's the last resort, I do remember it's a pain to get it all back together, getting that clip to fall in the slot all the way around was a bugger on top of keeping the tiny parts in place. Flag down a Snap-On truck and hand it to them, let them put new parts in it for you for free. :thumb: Or if you know a tech, leave it with them and let them give it to the Snap-On guy, I'm sure they still come in the shops every week to pickup their payments.

Since all my snapon tools got stolen back in the early 90's I've replaced them all with alternative tools. Husky mostly and a Lincoln floor jack (same forgings as snapon). I've had great luck with the huskies, haven't broke one yet. I must have had 3 or 4 warranty replacements of the snapon 1/4" drive ratchet in 5 yrs. Not sure what the deal with those was, all the others held up fine.
Google "who makes what tools". You might be surprised who makes what.
