I'd get that accounting program installed on a desktop somewhere and copy the accounting data over as well.
can't be done - used up the license we had and the company no longer allows transfers - if you install the program on a new machine you need a key to get it to work

All programs should allow existing software to be deregistered from one machine to be moved to another without buying an additional licence. Just for circumstances like this where there is a hardware failure, but it is what it is.

Solutions -

A backup is a good place to start. An image or clone of the drive is a good idea and do that at least weekly. That can be backed up to a large hard drive on a desktop computer or to the "cloud if you're so inclined (and trust the "cloud" or is that crowd?) This is a future solution.

You can remove the hard drive from the dud craptop and either install it directly into another craptop of the same model. That may hiccup on the first boot as Windoohs gets the license straight due to the new digital signature, but should work pretty much seamlessly. You could also install that drive into a desktop and install the software onto that desktop then use the existing data from the craptop drive. Given what you said about the license key I'd suggest moving it to a real, desktop, computer and run backups regularly in the future.

Bottom line is never, never, ever, only have one computer with critical/important/gotta have information on it. You're courting disaster and it looks like you got married to it at the moment.

well, i need help again
the dell latitude d820 that contains an accounting program that i desperately need to use right now is no longer charging the battery or powering up when plugged in. google and plenty of other people assure me it's either the charging dock or the motherboard. my battery is down to 40 minutes of life so i was looking at ebay at used d820s just to have a way to charge my battery ;) most of them are gutted and i have no idea if a laptop will charge a battery without hdd and/or operating system.
Dell D820 for sale | eBay
can somebody help? :(
FYI: I don't know if this effects the d820 or not, but some Dell laptops have a third thin wire on their power supplies which is used as a communication line. If that wire breaks in the cable or you use a non-Dell supply, the laptop sees it as a non-Dell product and will not charge or sometimes won't even operate. So I don't know if it applies here, just something to keep in mind.

Has me confused, never had a Dell and they may be different, plus I'm far from a computer expert, but I've powered and run laptops before off just the charger with the battery packs pulled.

Another thought tibs, on that software lic, I have a lifetime subscription with ASV4YOU, when I updated my computer with new version of Windows I had to email them, explain I updated the computer and they sent me a new key code. Couple years later when I updated to a new mother board, CPU and memory again I contacted them, this time they emailed me back and said that was the same as a "new computer" and I would need to buy a new key. So I called them, we went back and forth on what was just updating a computer and what constitutes a "new computer", so I asked what they considered "the original computer" and they told me the case/tower, when I explained I used the same tower and be happy to email them a pic of it, I just updated the components they coincided and gave me a new key. It might be worth fighting for!

To me, my simple mind, a lifetime key should mean just that, that key should be "mine" and good for my lifetime, for as long as "I" am alive. Not for how long I use my computer, or before updating it or even replacing my computer.

When I bought this Compaq desktop at BestBuy I was planning down the road. I asked they open the tower so I could see inside, wanted to make sure I'd have room to add and update, it's a big tower with lot's of extra bays. The only thing left original is the tower itself, I've had three new motherboards, CPU, memory, combo's since along with a lot of different HD's, PSU's and fans in it, I guess I picked a good one. :) It still has the Win XP key sticker on it LoL.

FYI, From ASV4YOU website Frequently Asked Questions

3. I have the UNLIMITED license for your software. I bought a new computer. May I use this license on a new computer or do I have to buy a new one?

As AVS4YOU software is licensed on a per-computer basis, you will need to purchase a separate UNLIMITED or 1-YEAR license for every new computer.

7. I would like to upgrade my personal computer (change video adapter, sound card, etc). Will the old license for AVS4YOU software still work with a newer computer configuration?

Yes, it will. The old license should function with the new configuration of your personal computer after you add expansion cards and adapters, change the display and so on. If you still have any problems with AVS4YOU software registration, please feel free to contact our support team via the support form on our web site.

Check what that software lic agreement reads tibs! Fight for it, worse they can say is No.

thanks, guys! :)

so have i, willy! ;)
unfortunately, not this time - it's either a bad charging port or bad motherboard. the moment i plug in the cable the green light goes out on the brick :(

not as dire as that - all the info is safe with my accountant ;) but when that guy moved all the way down to south carolina years ago we decided to install his software on my machine - i make the entries then use a thumb drive to email him the updates. at that time he had one unused license and because i do just data entry in the general ledger it did not matter much that i never got the updates the software company makes every year to reflect the changes in the tax law.

As in vaping, back up. I do a daily system and file back up on alternating external hard drives, stored out of the work environment. It's not perfect but I have done so for years.

Still, if you had an image backup or a clone of the drive you'd be a lot better off. I have a machine that is a dedicated backup server. Just an older motherboard and CPU with basic video and some large hard drives. My main desktop and both laptops get backed up to that twice a week and it runs an image and a clone of itself twice a week as well. I got burned once, and I used to manage the backup systems when I was in IT (should have known better) but it ain't gonna happen again.

Let's see how many remember this;
( you'll show your age if you do... )

“From the halls of (fill in blank) School to the shores of Bubblegum Bay,
We will fight our teachers’ paddles with spitballs, gum and clay.
First to fight for right of recess, and to keep our desks a mess,
We are proud to claim the title of “The Teachers’ Number One Pest!”

TrollDragon And one of my bestest friends was just like Eddy Haskell around my parents. I got up to more bad things with him .
We all had friends like that back in the day, some went to jail some unfortunately worse.

I would always had to ask one guy when he called to get together for a night out if I was going to end up in court afterwords. ;)
