My first e cigarette was an ego clone. It helped me quit analogs, was simple to use and maintain, and the batteries kept working for almost a year. The original kit more than paid for itself.
I fought the software wars. Good liquid was easy to find. I went from cartridges to tanks, cartomizers, clearomizers and carto tanks. I've settled on Resurrectors for the time being, but still hoping to find a good delivery system with a larger capacity.
The hardware wars started when I got tired of swapping batteries roughly every 4 hours. I vape a lot! Foolishly, I've not learned a lot about batteries beyond stacking is evil and mods with removable batteries have to have vent holes. I've been experimenting based on duration of charge.
First, I got the ego 18650 mod with a Trustfire charger and 2 Trustfire 18650 batteries. It just felt weird, so I swapped out for an Epower 18650. The batteries lasted about 10 hours, but I felt weird carrying it around. Within 2 months the charger and batteries began humming louder and louder every time I plugged them in. The supplier told me that was normal with age, but I was outside the 30 day point, so I couldn't get replacements. 18650 just was not working for me.
Next I got an Epower 14650 kit. The batteries lasted about 7 hours, a little less than I had hoped for, but it was very comfortable to use and carry. Unfortunately, something ragged inside the tube ripped a strip of casing off one of the 14650 batteries. That supplier has offered to replace the kit, which is wonderful, but I'm back to the old ego batteries until the replacement arrives.
Is there a mod I should be trying instead? I know Provari is the best of the best of the best, sir, but due to the cost, I'd feel like I had taken a ming vase to a rugby match!
I would like a durable set up with a 510 connection, battery life between 7 to 10 hours. Any serious advise would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Size and weight seems to be important to you, from what I can understand here. It sounds like you like the smaller mods, and understandably. I have a 14500 mod that I use for work, I carry a small carrying case with me that has; 3 extra 14500 batteries, an eGo battery, and about 5-10 filled cartos. The eGo is mostly incase my mod decides to die when I'm out and about.

I have an 18650 mod with a Kick that I use for at home and in the car when I'm doing errands, and the 14500 mod for when I go to work, and the drive to work.

If you're happy with a 3.7v device, and want something that's going to be durable, I would recommend that you check out the Silver Bullet. It's a bit on the larger side, probably a little bigger than you're looking for though. The same vendor makes a smaller version called the BB (Baby Bullet), which is a 14500 mod, smaller, lighter. Both are pretty solid mods, and the vendor stands behind their product.

With the right resistance coil, 3.7v is really enough for most vapers. You get good taste and vapor and it's not so hard on the batteries vs a VV mod cranked high.

The Lavatube is available with single 18650 IMR batteries. IMR is a safe(r) chemistry that can heat up to around 480 F without going into thermal runaway and the AW 18650 IMR can produce up to 10 amps of spike current without self destructing. I haven't heard of it happening, but the IMR batteries just produce high heat in failure mode and don't blow up like failed Li-ion batts. I don't think there is a recorded occurrence of a single battery 18650 mod self destructing, anyway. The ones that have were stacked battery mods.

The E-power is another low cost 3.7v device that is popular.
