There is zero evidence presented, but rather biased opinions of several folks who dislike cigarette warning labels, at
Anti-smoking ads make some smokers smoke more!

According to cigarette industry sales data:

Cigarette consumption in the UK declined 2.4% annually during the three years after that country required picture warnings on cigarette packs.

Cigarette consumption in Canada declined 1.7% annually during the three years after that country required picture warnings on cigarette packs.

Cigarette consumption in Brazil declined .9% annually during the three years after that country required picture warnings on cigarette packs.

Cigarette consumption in Australia declined .8% annually during the three years after that country required picture warnings on cigarette packs.

I strongly suspect that cigarette consumption in the US will decline by at least 2.5% annually during the three years after picture warnings appear on cigarette packs (now set for September, 2012), although much of that decline is likely to occur due to smokers switching to smokeless tobacco and/or e-cigarettes.

Looks like our friend Judge Richard Leon has been assigned to adjudicate the new lawsuit filed by tobacco companies challenging the new cigarette warning labels.

Sophey, welcome to the political end of this journey and you are right in understanding Bill is very much in our corner in this fight. Most of the news coverage comes from the anti side but that has changed somewhat. Something you can do to help the cause is let your representatives in Congress know that you don't agree with the government trying to tax safer tobacco products, like E Cigs, the same as cigarettes.

Okay, I have voted and left a comment. :)

When I saw the list of organizations in support of this bill, I must say I felt a bit disheartened. It seems there should be more organizations against it than only CASAA. On a positive note however, individuals are speaking out against it, and I can see how important it is for all of us to add our voices. Thanks for the heads up!

They make an excellent point, Bill. If they are to follow the written labeling requirements as well, they might have to start making the box that holds the products the size of a laptop.

  1. “the name and place of business of the tobacco product manufacturer, packer, or distributor,” see Act § 101(b) (inserting Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (“FDCA”) §903(a)(2)(A)), 21 U.S.C. § 387c(a)(2)(A);
  2. 2. “an accurate statement of the quantity of the contents in terms of weight, measure, or numerical count,” see Act § 101(b) (inserting FDCA § 903(a)(2)(B)), 21 U.S.C. §
    387c(a)(2)(B);
  3. 3. “an accurate statement of the percentage of the tobacco used in the product that is domestically grown tobacco and the percentage that is foreign grown tobacco,” see
    Act § 101(b) (inserting FDCA § 903(a)(2)(C)), 21 U.S.C. § 387c(a)(2)(C); and
  4. 4. where applicable, “the statement ‘Sale only allowed in the United States,’” see Act §301, FDCA § 920(a), 21 U.S.C. § 387t(a).
Likewise, the Act mandates changes to the substantive content of the text of the warnings. See Act §
201, 123 Stat. at 1842-43 (listing nine new textual warnings).

But then again, they could just use 3 pt font for the written stuff on the label....

On the other hand, it would be the most helpful if the label on each different type of product included a statement of "What are the odds" for lung disease, heart attack, stroke, and cancer compared with not using the product. Of course, that's a pipe dream, since getting an accurate number that all can agree on would be as easy as teaching a fish to ride a bicycle.

Well, Guinness proved that it could be done, using effective motivation...
Fish on a bicycle - YouTube

Ok. Now we will return to the thread already in progress...

Sent from my GalaxyS 4G with my non GRIP'n hand.

Possible, maybe. Easy, prolly not.

But I think "effective animation" is more accurate than "effective motivation", no?

Smokers are gonna collect those things like baseball cards. People who smoke know the risks, they have for decades.
