I disagree. I think you were right the first time, and the campaign will be successful in its intended purpose.

Sad to say, I think Lolady hit the nail on the head here!

I'm surprised BT is fighting the labeling. The FDA has given them the perfect marketing strategy for getting tobacco into the hands of teens. As a former secondary and college educator, I can nearly guarantee these "warnings" are going to make smoking among teens more popular than ever. Especially "successful" will be the ads of the zombie-like figures. Smart ad campaign! And it's completely free to BT. It will also benefit BP and gov't funds dependent on sin taxes. The only people it doesn't benefit are the kids who will pick up smoking just to be cool by passing these stupid warnings around at parties.

:sneaky:To the "wise men and women" pushing this "warning" campaign, you either don't get it or (even worse) really do!

Youth smoking has sharply declined during past decade, and it will continue declining.

The only reason I urged Senator Enzi to amend the tobacco Control Act (to require color graphic warnings covering 50% of cigarette packs) was because smoking rates and cigarette consumption declined in Canada and Australia after those countries required similar warnings.

Although cigarette companies have paid lots of folks to claim that these warnings won't reduce smoking, and although cigarette companies have now filed a second lawsuit against these warnings (Judge McKinney ruled against the cigarette companies in the first lawsuit at http://www.tobaccofreekids.org/pressoffice/district_court_opinion_01052010.pdf), I remain confident that the second lawsuit will also be unsuccessful, and that cigarette consumption will decline after the warnings appear on cigarette packs.

The way i'm looking at it, BT knows exacly what they're doing. They know that initially yes, the packs will turn into trading cards. BUT... look at all the publicity they will get when they take this to court. The 'kids' will see what the 'grown-ups' are trying hard to keep from them. They're gonna hear 'save the kids' over and over again. The more you say no to some of them... Because 'grown-ups' don't have a clue or a life.

So looking into it, I think BT and the ANTZ will get what the want in the end at least in the short term. BT get new customers, ANTS can sustain their campagn.

Just my observation

Except the none of the large tobacco companies and none of the anti tobacco organizations supported Sen. Mike Enzi's amendment to require color graphic warnings on cigarette packs. In fact, all of the large tobacco companies and CTFK/ACS/AHA/ALA opposed Enzi's amendment.

Its not only inaccurate, but absurd to assert that tobacco companies support color graphic warnings on cigarette packs (after all of the large tobacco companies except Altria have repeatedly sued to strike down the warnings).

And this story illustrates how sometimes implementation of well-intentioned plans results in unintended consequences:

Anti-smoking ads make some smokers smoke more!

It's easy to find a counter argument to anything these days .. much is propaganda promoted by BT .. or used to support someone elses agenda .. anyone can write an article about anything, publish it on the Web, make it look official ..

It does not help that all of the graphic warnings are either staged or photo shopped. That alone points to the dishonesty of the anti-smokers.

Most everything is altered in one way or another these days .. or staged .. what's the big deal .. ?? You think your Big Mac looks as good in person as it does in an ad .. ??

Perhaps the makers of Chantix should be required to place graphic warning labels on their product as well. Graphic pictures of a young man who's soiled himself hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom with a noose around his neck; or a teenage girl sprawled dead in a bathtub of blood from slitting her wrists while on Chantix; or an elderly man (on Chantix for a period of time) found slouched on his sofa, soaked with blood, unrecognizeable because he has blown most of his head away with a gun. And of course no need to photo shop these pictures, they are very real and the numbers continue to climb. After all if these pictures deter even one person from committing suicide then they've done the job.

I wonder what Pfizer would have to say about this idea....or the FDA....or even lawmakers. Sadly we all know the answer - evidently it is not the profit nor the foreknowledge that makes death distasteful, rather some perverted moralism fueled with intolerance and self-righteousness that tips the scales of feigned justice and presents a grotesque facade of acceptability under the delusional banner of "for the greater good."

I’m just a former smoker who tried everything to quit and chanced upon a little gadget that brought about a miracle for my health. My personal experience has convinced me the e-cigarette is a wonderful smoking alternative; it is the one thing that helped me (and my father who smoked for over 50 years) quit smoking.

The best way to see the e-cig widely accepted by the public is for anti-smoking campaigns to embrace the use of e-cigs as a positive alternative to smoking. Something I did not realize, before a little Google search, is that SmokeFree PA encouranges the acceptance of e-cigarettes: “Bill Godshall, executive director of SmokeFree Pennsylvania and a longtime campaigner for smoking bans in public places, theorizes that e-cigs are ‘at least 99 percent less hazardous than cigarettes and there's no smoke, so nonsmokers don't get harmed’” (Davis, Carolyn. “Smokeless Smokers.” Philly.Com: Article Collections. 05/25/2011.) <http://articles.philly.com/2011-05-25/news/29582141_1_e-cigarettes-real-cigarette-nicotine>.

While I remain a bit skeptical this “warning” campaign will be accepted as anything more than yet one more attempt to harass smokers, in addition to becoming a means of advertising (“Bad press beats no press.”) for BT and BP, I do thank you Bill Godshall (and SmokeFree PA) for speaking in favor of e-cigs!

In the end, I think it’s highly possible e-cigs just might also end up with some great free advertising as a result of the controversy these warnings and the pursuant court trials will churn up. I’m beginning to see great opportunity to add comments regarding the availability and efficacy of e-cigs below media articles. After all, the more people are exposed to the existence of e-cigs, the more they have a real chance to become ex-smokers.

Sophey, welcome to the political end of this journey and you are right in understanding Bill is very much in our corner in this fight. Most of the news coverage comes from the anti side but that has changed somewhat. Something you can do to help the cause is let your representatives in Congress know that you don't agree with the government trying to tax safer tobacco products, like E Cigs, the same as cigarettes.

https://www.popvox.com/bills/us/112/s1403

This link allows you to voice your opinion and it notifies your representatives of that opinion. Register and speak out, it takes less than five minutes. Have your father do the same and post the link to any social media that you may be involved with. Getting people to step up to the plate, even for a short time, is difficult in our culture. Government doesn't hear the people if they don't speak up.

Bill has been a great help to the smoke-free alternatives movement.

On a different note, I must say that the guy interviewed for that Smokeless Smokers article is both intelligent and attractive.
