As a new member, and a new supporting member, I thought maybe I'd offer my somewhat fresh eyed perspective.

Having been an admin and a mod of a rather large community in the past, and being someone who believes strongly in supporting the web presences you appreciate, I have to say this community impresses me, both members and staff, and that is why I chose to pony up. If I don't end up staying emotionally invested in it and find myself drifting away after a time, I may not choose to do it next year, and that's normal, web communities are very liquid that way, and you have to just assume that you'll have a turnover from year to year- old members go dormant and stop paying, new members sign up, and if you've got a healthy, strong community, it will still balance out. It's just the nature of the beast.

Here's the thing I love about a paying members area, from a cold calculating management perspective: when particular users start to get cliquey in a thread or subforum, they bond with each other in a way that is far less liquid than the community as a whole. They tend to congregate in those threads or forums with each other to the exclusion of other areas, and that will naturally build on itself. They may become less active elsewhere, less able to be active elsewhere, because they are dependent on the clique that's developed in said subforum. Being cut off from that subculture will be an extremely uncomfortable idea psychologically, and many people will be happy to pay on a continuing basis to stay connected with their chosen group, even when it is technically possible for them all to hang out elsewhere.

Once you've been in the clubhouse, it's no fun to be relegated to the yard; even if all the same people are there- you'll always wonder what they're doing in the clubhouse without you. So personally, I think it's a very smart idea, and one that would tend to retain a lot more paying users in the long run, regardless of what other perks you decide to implement. You can't underestimate the power of the clubhouse.

As to the improved communication issue, perhaps you could frame it as a sort of concierge service, which, in my mind anyway, is more of an added value type thing, as opposed to actually giving higher priorities to paid members when it comes to regular avenues of support, if that makes sense.

Anyway, as a month-old user, I think this community and it's staff does an excellent job of being a welcoming, stimulating place to learn and contribute- I'm already finding myself drawn into potential friendships here, and the value of my education has been frankly priceless. You've really got a beautiful thing going here, and I'd love to see it thrive financially as well. My :2c:, yours to keep.

Your thoughts are exactly in line with ours. It's not about alienating non-paying members, because they have the same opportunity as others, it's about rewarding the members who choose to support the forum. This support helps make the forum better for everyone. So I applaud your thoughts, you are right on target.

Ok, I reworded the better communications with staff statement to hopefully clarify the meaning.

I also added basic PC support involving the forum. We have several staff members whom are knowledgeable when it comes to computers and the internet, so this could be a great idea!

I also added an additional category called "Other Ideas for Abroad" for things suggested not necessarily meant for the Supporting Member area.

Please keep in mind, just because it's on the list, doesn't mean it will make the final cut but it will be considered in discussion when we begin to put together our final product.

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far, keep them coming!

I wouldnt put any xtras as far as help and important info that could be of any kind of help to the community as a whole, that would go against the sole purpose of this forum.

Keep it special and reserved,no problem
It will still annoy a certain % of the membership, its inevitable, but I know you guys can manage that.

And yes, getting a tiny bit more since we support the site is great,as right now we have zip compared to a non-supporting member, cant argue that angle any way you look at it. (while respecting my 1st point!)

As for suggestions:

1-I want a bumper sticker!
2-More signature space!

I would be against it, unless you have an address to send a check to become a supporting member.
For those of us unwilling to do pay-pal, and no way to use a regular credit card, yet are willing
to contribute money........give us a means.
Send me a check and I'll donate in your name. I imagine after all this the big dogs would go for that. BTW it doesnt have to be me it could be someone you know.

As far as this whole getting thru to the necessary parties goes, that had nothing to do with my deciding to support. And FTR a while back I came across something on the web that I felt Roly needed to know about asap. I quickly found out I couldnt PM him. Well it took all of 2 hrs for me to get a response from him directly. I simply asked the vets to get the message to him, and just like that he and I were chatting. So I personally dont see any issue with having to follow proper channels to get in touch with someone who is got bigger and better things to do than to deal with 6 million PMs about all kinds of silly stuff.

Yeah, you are correct. We have to keep in mind he is the Website Manager. Dealing with the day to day matters on the forum is really not his responsibility, that's what the Admin and Mod staff for here for. So he isn't always on the forum and a PM may go days without being noticed (not likely but potentially), when if referred to the Admins of Mods, it get's handled rather quickly. If it requires rolygate's attention, we can reach him more quickly than anyone else. So this is the reason his PMs are turned off. It's not that he doesn't want to help, in fact if you look throughout the site, you can see he is a part of the community as well and joins in to help where he can.

Basically, there's a chain of command here, just like most any operation. First line is the moderators, second is the Admin, third is Forum Manager, then there's the Website Manager. It works very efficiently.

donating in somebody else's name is, atm, not possible. i'm sure joker will substantiate that.

This can be done but it would require one of two things to happen.

1. The person who is allowing you to use their PayPal would have to give you their login information for PayPal. Which if it's someone you know and trust, it wouldn't be a problem but if it's not someone you know, you probably don't want to do this.

2. The member would have to give out their login credentials for ECF and allow the friend to process the subscription.

Neither of these are recommended because in both instances one person becomes vulnerable. We have had a brother allow the other brother to use their PayPal account, so it can be done but extreme caution would have to be exercised.

I am checking into a way we can do this more efficiently but currently I have no solution to this problem.

The winking avatar gave me an idea. How about larger avatars, say 250X250 for the supporting members ?

Does this mean you want a BIG winking phoenix bird for your avatar?

ok....back to our regularly scheduled programing...........

A larger signature line would be nice, but not necessary.

Kay, I thought about a winking phoenix, but IMO that would be a bit too much.

In fact, I don't think that I would even want a larger avatar, but since j0ker is looking for ideas, I figured, why not. :D
