For the past 8 months or so I've been taking my passthrough when I go out and attaching it to a Kensington Power Pack in the cell phone pocket on the outside of my purse. I hit it whenever I want and never get a second look. I think since it's on a cord and people don't know what it is, that they think it's some kind of medical device they've never seen before and ignore it. Before that I tended to stealth vape.

I wish I didn't feel awkward. But I think most people are not familiar with PV and would say something - and I don't really care for confrontation - especially with strangers. Outside of vaping in areas where analogs are allowed, I vaped at a hockey game and didn't encounter any problems from any of the employees. I didn't go out of my way to hide it, but I didn't flaunt it either. I look forward to trying it after a meal in a restaurant and see what happens. Generally, I just wait till I walk outside -- I mean, its not like I'm hanging out at the table that long after we finish eating that I can't wait till we leave. But when I do hang out after a meal, I look forward to giving it a try.

The one place I feel awkward vaping is acquaintance's homes. I suppose it would be easy enough to explain it to them, but it just makes me feel uncomfortable. For example, I'm on a committee at my condo, and we had a meeting at a neighbor's unit tonight. I wanted to vape, but I just didn't feel comfortable. Wish that feeling would go away.

I run into this when I visit my parents. My mother was a smoker for many years, she tried to quit a couple times, the last time was with chantix and she's been off the smokes for around 2 years now. I've showed her my e-cig and explained it all to her, she hopes it works for me. But I still can't bring myself to puff on it in her house, even though I'd smoke around her outside. Her overall mood has been pretty bad since she quit, she really enjoyed smoking. I think I'm afraid she may want to try the e-cig and not like it and go back to analogs.

When out and about in public, I vape where one is allowed to smoke. Which means on the way in, on the way out. The only place I've openly vaped is in a tavern (and that is rare since I don't frequent them often) I won't do it in eating establishments, especially family ones. Its a bit of a new generation, lots of people like to keep that away from their kids, not just because of the health reasons so why go out of my way to pick a fight and ruin everyone's night.

I think it's a good idea to not vape in family establishments. Even if vaping does not have any adverse health effects (I'm not stating that it doesn't, I'm just saying IF), vaping still looks like smoking and kids (and adults) may not be able to distinguish between the two.

I stealth vape a LOT. BLowing the vapour into my chest, or under my arm usually works - I also try to hit a few between aisles where nobody is, or they're at the other end of the aisle.
I have lost count of all the places I've SVed, but a few I remember are: Macys, Kroger's, Brookshires, Albertsons, Sears, Dillards, Ridgmar & Hulen Malls, 7-11, Shell Gas Stations and other gas stations too, Pilot Travel Center (I purchased a NJOY NPRO Starter Kit right afterwards!), and lots of others. I'm making a 'game' out of it (isn't life a game, anyway?). Maybe somebody ought to start a Thread "Places I've SVed" - I'd do it but I'm very tired and fixing to turn in...

Heh, I'm finding stealth vaping a rather fun "game" myself. I'm SV'ing in various places and sometimes think, "Tee hee....maybe a camera will catch me and I'll get nabbed by security." :vapor:
I've vaped in this cafe with friends a few times, doing it fairly discretely but in plain sight of the staff and other patrons. I'll even have a little toot and notice a patron seeing me vape, and I'll be staring at them like "go ahead and confront me, I DARE ya." But they turn away and keep talking with their friends and I'm sitting there like :( aw poo. LOL! I haven't been confronted about vaping yet.

But yeah, like others have said, you don't want to be obnoxious about as it won't help our "cause".

Aside from the obvious health benefits compared to analogs, one of the most appealing things to me about vaping was that I CAN do it anywhere. I used to leave a store or whatever just to take that trip outdoors and have a quick smoke. Now, I just vape pretty much anywhere I go, including at the office. The office in this case is a corporate HQ, and at this point I think everyone there has seen me puffing away in my cubicle. I've not gotten a single dirty look or complaint about it, just some curious questions, and a good deal of support as well. Around my area, it seems most people have at least a rudimentary understanding of what a PV is, at least as much as knowing that it's NOT smoking. Vaping in public has started a few conversations, in each case (so far) with current smokers that are interested. Just today while waiting for a bus, I spoke with a very discouraged smoker, who is trying to quit and failing with every other substitute they've tried. I offered what I could about my PV, and they seemed more interested in trying it after I shared the little I know from my experiences (and from reading here).

Of course, I do believe in courtesy as well: and it would just "feel" rude in certain circumstances. To me, that comes down to basically any indoor space thats: crowded, cramped, someone else's [w/out prior permission], or anywhere in plain sight of children.

I killed my own kids' curiosity right off the bat when my 1st pv arrived. I let them try it. The 15yo gagged and said it tasted like my analogs smelled. The 12yo agreed and almost hocked up a lung. After watching his big brothers, the 10yo was scared to try it. Problem solved with them immediately.

My workplace is a different story, since I'm a teacher. A stealth vape for me means when one class leaves and before the next class arrives. But I promise you, the kids I teach, especially the ones in those last few classes of the day, they would appreciate that I'm doing it if for no other reason than my newfound patience with them. :)

This is to be expected in this day and time. Smoking is so Taboo now. When people see what they think is smoke they assume its a tobacco device of some kind. There is not enough known about vaping and most of the public dont even know what a E-cig is. Its just human nature that you are going to feel awkward vaping in public. I just vape in a discreet manner while in public. Maybe soon this will change as the popularity of vaping increases. My friends and family have been educated by me on vaping, so i freely vape while at their homes.

Stealth vape whenever I can....Movie theater: blow it into my sweater. Mall/Shops: hold it it a little longer. Restaurants and Bars don't seem to mind at all - just full out vape there. Probably the only place I wouldn't vape would be in my bosses office!
Once you do it a couple of times, you lose your fear.

First couple places I used it at work, were my boss, and the big boss' offices! I had to show it off ;) Neither of them smokers, my boss had quit years ago.

My turn ;) And so much better way to do it!

I have to chime in here.

There are few places I don't vape: Church, court, restaurants, peoples homes who have not okayed it.

Other than that, I vape everywhere, walmart, bank, grocery store, every other store. Nobody has said anything to me yet. Some people give wierd looks, honestly most people don't notice at all. Even if they do notice they don't care.

I'll tell you why, I'm not hiding, I'm not ashamed, nor am I sensitive about what other people will say. When you stealth vape, you send the message that you are doing something wrong, or something you aren't comfortable with.

Within 5 seconds of someone lighting a cigarette you know exactly what it is and where its coming from. So although people may not know what a PV is, they know 1 thing: ITS NOT A CIGARETTE.

I disagree with the I don't vape where I wouldn't smoke. I VAPE EVERYWHERE BECAUSE IM NOT SMOKING.

There is a current cowardice mantra of: If we aren't sensitive to other people blah blah blah, it will be banned or whatever. Newsflash, no matter what you do, the powers that be will attempt to ban it regardless. Grow a backbone, stand tall, and be proud that you are saving your life by vaping. If you are going to hide it, stand outside and vape in the cold you should have stuck with ciggies. Your bad.

To each their own.... my answer is simple.

For me, I don’t

There is a lot of backlash from... where is the list

The FDA
The tobacco industry
Rabid anti-smokers
believe it or not... some smokers
Big Pharma
The airline industry
Both political parties

the list goes on

E-Cigs have gotten kind of a bad rap.... so... I treat them exactly like a cigarette, I smoke where smoking a cigarette is allowed, and am never where they are not. I don’t ask to vape in the home of someone that does not, but I do invite them to come outside and let me show it to them.

The less "in your face" we are about it, and the more educational we are, particularly with other smokers ( who are smoking where smoking is allowed ) the more courteous we are, the further we will go.

Being able to smoke where smoking was not allowed was never ever a push for me to do this... so I treat it exactly like smoking a cigarette.

My reasons are for courtesy. I don't feel awkward about people seeing me vape at all and I love sharing pv and vaping info with anyone who asks. One is use to odd looks when they vape this, its not something one can hide. :)

Though I do recall the times you could smoke anywhere, including a doctor's office, not being allowed to smoke in stores etc came into play long before smoking got even more taboo. I just think it goes right up with with people who feel the need to be all over each other making out in public. Some places are just more acceptable than others. One must just use their grown up judgment.

As far as just feeling awkward, I think that is normal for a lot of people who have just started vaping but once who get the chance to explain what you are doing to curious people, the awkwardness starts to go away.
