can someone recommend a good starter mech mod and atomizer? i'd prefer a clone, cos i don't want to pay a lot for the first one, because i may not enjoy it! i just want to test the waters. i'm really intrigued by the mechanical mods. i like how simple and flush they look and like fiddling with things, making things, etc.

Do you know ohms law? Are you prepared to fork over the bucks for the right batteries? Are you willing to rebuild? Mechs are not for everyone, no matter how elegant and pretty they are, they have a purpose and an intent. If you get one you are headed down RBA alley, and you'd better be ready for that. You will need an ohms meter, voltage meter, the right batteries, kanthal for your builds and wicking material. Then you need to learn how to build whatever atty you decide to go with.

A mech just puts the current right to the coil, no questions asked. Your control over your vape is how you build your atty. Think on these things.

I have been down the road and have a few thoughts looking back. Mechanical mods definitely look better, IMHO, and we all know it is better to look good than to feel good. I spent a while using a mech mod with nautilus tanks and it worked fine, I have a nautilus on a mech mod right now.

A regulated mod, like the MVP or provari, was a far better choice for me at the start. They are easier than a mechanical and, with some of them you do not need batteries, chargers, etc. Just plug it in the USB and it charges. It also tells you when to charge, looks after the battery, and keeps you safer.

Now I have both regulated and mechanical. If you wait a few more weeks you will have regulated mods that go to 100 so you can do, almost, what a mechanical will do.

This is exactly what I tell people when they start asking me what my set up is, and to tell them where to buy the stuff so they can do what I do...

My first mech was the Tesla M5, although it's fun getting new vape gear and building coils. Its absolutely critical that you ensure your safety at all times. Using the right batteries, not building to low of ohms unless you know ur battery can handle it, etc

We cannot stress this enough. Get good batteries from a reputable vendor. Sony VTC4 and VTC5 are the most recommended. DO NOT buy batteries from FastTech unless you want to wait 2-3 months for them to arrive. This is a well known vendor of VTC's (18650 Batteries Li-ion rechargeable)

As for recommendations on mechs and attys goes, I would recommend a stingray clone (~$40) with a patriot clone (~$20). This is what I'm currently using and it's really easy to work with. If you get your gear from FastTech it'll take 2 weeks to a month to come in.

Here is a good read:
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/blogs/baditude/6589-15-inexpensive-mechanical-mod-rda-setup.html

The only thing I can add is if you don't mind clones..and long wait..head over to Fasttech or Focalecig, look up Nemesis mod, since you're on budget

if you don't mind paying little more, there are few sites that people here buy from the USA, 101vapes, 88evape, vapingwalrus, even E-bay..these sites give you good few on these mechs...I would also see if youtube has some reviews on them...

but please keep safety in mind...and read that link and it's other links..but in the end it, it's up to you and your safety...

I have regulated mods. I'm not completely new, though I have only been vaping for a few months. I learn fast, and I'm thinking of trying out the whole mech mod thing. Thank you for the safety warnings, too. You seriously can't have enough of those,,not trying to get injured. Thx for the recommendations, I will think on this some more.

I've been reading up on all these things. Some I already knew a bit about just from reading random articles and viewing video reviews. I've read tutorials and whatnot, and I do believe that this is something I am capable of understanding and doing. I would like to go down this road for several reasons, but the most important ones are a) I simply have too much time on my hands and need a new hobby and b) this will keep me from smoking cigarettes and--more importantly--the drugs that I've spent the last few months trying to stay away from.

That being said, does anyone else have any more suggestions, preferably with links? I'd rather avoid buying from fasttech, as I've ordered from them before and it just takes so d*** long! Any other sites? I could pay around $40 for the mech mod itself, $20-30 for a decent atomizer, and whatever is needed for the wicking material and kanthal and batteries. CLONES PLZ. I just want something to learn on. Thanks you guys!

As long as you have some 30amp batteries (or at least 10 amp draw batteries) you should be ok however, do NOT do any rebuilding without an OHMS checker. This will do a couple things for you. First, it will tell you exactly what you're running at and you can figure out how many amps you're going to draw. Second, and also very important, is it will tell you if you have a short. IF you have a short on a build, your mechanical mod is going to get very hot very fast! and has the potential to hurt you.

Next, please don't start building sub ohm right off the start. Go with 1.2 or so at least and get used to building. That means you need to learn how to build coils properly....don't go trying to run a clapton coil or twisted 26 gauge your first day or you're just asking for trouble. Start rebuilding by all means...but do your research, watch some videos from respected builders (not just any yahoo on youtube) and do LOTS and LOTS of reading.

Be prepared to be frustrated, but if you work through it and take your time you'll get there. We all had to start somewhere. Learn from others mistakes.

Let us know if we can help you through this journey. :D

I've been looking at Stingray clones. Any other good ones like that? I really like the ability to change the battery size of the mod. I don't see a mech mod being my primary vape, so I wouldn't mind using a smaller battery. I feel like I might prefer the smaller setup.

a quick search reveals there are issues with the button on several stingray clones. the best advice i can give you when buying a clone is to look for problems...if you can't find anyone complaining about it and its been out longer than a month you might just be safe buying it. good luck.

You can get a nice setup for $70 or so. clone Mech and clone Atty. Just so many to choose from is the problem. They all have some little quirk about them but they are all pretty much the same thing. Once people really get into them is when they start discussing all the tiny differences; brass vs copper, voltage drops etc and IMHO those are really the guys that are cloud chasing and extreme sub-ohmming. Unless you are just a stickler for details you probably wouldn't notice. But you definitely need some things like an ohm meter. That on is a must period

Exactly, I bought a Stingray and the button is a little crunchy. I can see what the people are talking about now but there are fixes out there for it as well.
