Creative Accounting helps.

I have spares of everything, so I don't count it as an expense until I use it. An example would be the 20 Star Dusts. I have extra vg, pg, nic etc. that I don't charge to vaping until I break the seal on the bottle.

So, using that logic, I broke even yesterday, and today again (opened vg, pg. but that will last weeks, maybe a month.)

I am out of pocket $846 (includes $260 that I spent using HD Smoke and buying $5 (yes, each) pre-filled cartomizers) but have $265 'in Stock'. Don't forget, you can't vape those shipping costs and even I can't 'stock' them.

Wouldn't trade a minute of it, except if I had found ECF sooner I would have passed up the HD Smoke!

Edit : I guess money spent without a time frame for it is pointless.
Reduced smoking all January, so money ahead.
HD Smoke all February, 5 packs of cigs instead of 29
1100 mah pass-through all March, 0.00 smoked.

We claim progress rather than perfection.

I does decline eventually. I figure we probably spent close to $3000 or more our first year of vaping, but our smoking costs for the same period of time would have been $4800. The second year we spend less than $500 so we saved another $4800. I just went on a spending spree of about $700 with my tax return, but I think we've only spend about $300 in addition to that so far this year.

 And what about stuff you'll end up never using because something better/prettier will be on your PV?
Your way of calculating things makes me happy. So, I DIDN'T spend 800$ this month on supplies, I spent only ~100$.

I'll explain a little more. Now that I am even for what I have opened so far, including all open juice, as I come ahead the surplus is used to pay off that 'stock'. No, i don't intend to ignore the 'white elephant' forever!

I am saving $9 per day so another 30 days to clear the slate completely (yes, I have that much juice opened to last 30 days). If I sell a battery or cartomizer to a neighbor, that reduces the 'owed' account as well. I actually have a jar that I keep my 'smoking' money in and I watch it move each day. Another incentive to not buy cigs. I actually have my last 7 cigs sealed in a large pill bottle so I do not have to buy a pack if I do weaken or get curious.

What ever works for a person is all good. I like to see the visual and know what I did spend, what I would have spent, and that each day is making a difference.

If you buy a car (thousands) the cost compared to a taxi ($20) is quite daunting but the whole experience opens up a new world for you. That's what vaping is to me!

I really think that I'm ahead, way ahead of the game. Sure, I've spent a bit of money on vaping, but I have something to show for it. In the 7 months I've been vaping I'd have spent about $1470 on stinkies. I know that I've spent less than $900. So I'm ahead. I have PV's that work well for me & at least 400 ml of good juice that I like. I have plenty of cartos & other supplies. I could in theory not spend another dime for a few months or longer, but something will catch my eye & I'll spend more.

Luckily, I have pretty much settled on the equipment I like and didn't have to buy a lot of other stuff before I found it thanks to the good people on this forum. That being said, I went from buying 5-6 cartons a month at $42/carton to buying one 5 pack of cartos ($10.68) and two 30ml bottles of juice ($23.17) to last me the entire month. So roughly $34 - cutting my expenses by 86.5%

I dicken with Quicken so knowing my numbers is a no brainer. And sure, our sigs with counters only tell part of the story. But when I run my numbers starting with April 2011 - the month I still bought my monthly supply of cigarettes and two complete eGo kits in the same 30 days - I'm still ahead $1,021.43 to date.

Those first couple few months always look bad. First I bought my eGo, Then I knew I needed a second charger for backup. And since a kit came with a charger and two more attys (knew I would need more of those too) - let alone extra batteries - there went the KA-CHING on kit number two. But after that my hardware expenses were minimal for the next 10 months.

And you have to look at the long term average. There have been some months where I have spent nothing on e-cig hardware or liquids because I had so much at hand. December? I spent more than I normally used to on smoking. (Curse those wacky Christmas and New Years sales!)

You can quit and save money doing this. Or you can have a hobby. It can be hard to do both.

One intangible often mentioned as a saving is health, and that's certainly a biggie! But there's another one that's almost always overlooked, and to me it's just about as important as anything else I get from this whole vaping experience: education. I Love To Learn, and since I've been fooling with PVs & visiting this Forum the things I've been learning here really are priceless to me. I got here with a bit of knowledge (mostly rather dated) in electronics, as well as a number of other things often touched upon in the wonderful world of vaping. But a lot of this knowledge has been asleep for years. Here, it's being reawakened and given new applications, a new playground full of hope & positive direction. Folks, thanks to all of you I'm having a ball with this.

I'm also proving - to myself, if to nobody else - that it doesn't *have* to be expensive to be fun. I don't place deadlines on myself for anything, and I'm retired & single so I can ignore any deadlines anybody else tries to place on me. When I mix a juice that turns out especially vile (this does happen) it can always be made tolerably less vile so I can use it, and learn something (or some things) from it. No hurry.

I think whatever we spend on vaping or anything else, at least a part of that expenditure is for new knowledge, whether we realize it or not. At least I've realized this is true *for me*, so any time I spend money or use anything I bought & fail to learn something from the experience, today I know I'm not getting all I paid for - and it's my own fault.

So for a "break even" point, I ain't looking for one. It's just more fun for me being a player than a scorekeeper, but that's just me.

Hope everyone's having a great weekend, & Happy Vaping! :vapor:

My initial outlay in the first month was approximately £300, I planned to break even by the beginning of month 6; and I was doing well until the middle of my 4th month vaping full time and all of a sudden the kit I had been perfectly happy with just didn't seem to be quite doing it for me any more so another round of trying things to find out what did "do" it for me happened, now I'm pretty much set, I have a few things on my "wish list", you know nice to have things rather than must have things, but here I am at day 166 of full time vaping and I'm STILL down by almost exactly £300!!!

I have considered writing that money off as valid expenditure for a "start up" hobby; but the stubborn part of me wants to see my spreadsheet break even.

So here follows a few months of frugal vaping and using up some of my back ups of back ups of back ups of back ups, I will not get carried away with the shiney, honest............ahem!

Well folks this is all very interesting. And I also have calculated my 1st month's expenditures & I am upside down too. But I recall that in ~1980 I attended Smokenders at ~$500.00+. It was successful in my quitting analogs for approx 25 years. But if you factor in inflation the equivalent cost today would easily be $1000.00 or more. Just sayin that quitting analogs is priceless.
PS. Thanks for the spreadsheet John

I did the same at start, got me a 510-t kit ... A PCC 2 extra batteries, some cartos etc. Alot of juices to test. I am now using XL usb ego-t/c batteries (1 of each) with ego mega dual coil cartos from smok. This is it for me. I did buy some other carto's, stardust, lil mama tank etc. But the mega dual carto's are it for me. So I might spend some money on some stuff .. But I have to read good reviews before buying anything else again. Now I am spending more money on DIY flavors :). But if you look at it for me almost those 5 months. I spent less then I would have on analogs

I have spent a ton of $$ but mostly on trying to find my all day vape (Found it now) and turning everything I have pink LOL. I have now decided that I get 57.00 a week to spend or save towards vaping stuff as thats how much I spent on the stinkies. I have spent probably 600.00 since Feb 10th but am having fun and breathing better. I am now to the point where I know what PV I want but it doesn't exist yet. I want a VV GG so I have decided to start saving and when He makes one I will be among the 1st group to get 1 or 2. This is going to be a long and fun journey for me. I always said I loved smoking because it was the only thing that was JUST mine. Now I get to combine vaping with shopping (my two favorite things) in the whole wide world. I love vaping and don't care about the cost no matter how big it gets. Happy Vaping :)
