I'm new to vaping, about a month in, and decided to try to rebuild the coil in my evod. I'm do excited because it actually worked. The first time. It actually worked the first time (yaaaay!). I'm reading about 2.3 ohms, 6/5 coil, with a cotton wick. Now the only problem is that I'm afraid to actually try it. I'm afraid that I actually didn't do it right, and it's going to blow up in my face. Am I the only one who has this fear, when just starting to build coils?

If it's reading 2.3 ohms, that means, to me, that you've built a good coil. I wouldn't be afraid to use it. I've done a couple that didn't work on the meter, so I trashed them and started over. One was shorted somewhere, the other was too low to fire on the Vamo (<1.5 ohms). Put it on your battery and push the button to see if you can hear it working,
Ok, so I've wrapped a few coils this week, and they've all come out pretty good. Yes I have used them, and no, they haven't blown up in my face as I first feared 
. Anyway, my issue now is with dry-burning. I've removed the wicks from 2 of them and let them soak in water overnight. The next day, I let them air dry then tried dry-burning. They both taste burnt after dry-burning. I've watched YouTube vids on how to do this, but I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. I'm pretty good at figuring stuff out on my own, but I was even having problems with the replacement heads doing the same thing (which is why I started wrapping my own, since I was going through heads too quickly).

I pull out the cotton before dry-burning. I may be a newbie but I know that much! Lol. I've been changing the cotton once a day, because it's so easy to do, and I don't have enough evods yet to have one for several different flavors. I've tried dry burning if I notice the coil get gunky, depending on the juice I'm using.

For now, I'm using just an ego battery. As I'm just getting into this, I purchased a few batts and evods to use while I'm still learning the nuances of vaping. I plan on upgrading gradually after doing my research and saving money for the good stuff. I can't wait to get into the more advanced options available but I need to keep my wallet happy first.

your rebuild sounds like it went much better than mine. my first attempt came out around 7 ohms.. second attempt at 4 ohms, and third attempt at 1.2 ohms. all not in the 1.8-2.6 range i was aiming for. can build coils for my dripping atty now, just cant hit the right resistance (with correct size so it doesnt short on the metal enclosure)for my bcc rebuilds.
I didn't actually expect it to work the first time, or be so easy. There was a thread that I found on here that had pics of how to rebuild the coil in a protank and use a cotton ball as a wick. I just followed his directions and it worked great. He used a toothpick to wrap the coil and to position it in the head. It was simple, I had everything but the wire on hand (which I bought off eBay for dirt cheap). I originally did a 6/5 coil, then tried a 5/4 coil which suits me better. It came out to be about 1.9-2.0 ohms. Much better vapor production. I'm not sure how to reference threads in other threads, but I found it by googling "evod rebuild with cotton ball wick" or something like that.
I shoot for 1.5-1.6 ohms on my coils (work fine with my eVic) and vape like a dream at 8-9 watts. I am a very conservative type and am not looking to change weather systems with my clouds. Have fun!
The burnt taste may be from ashes left over from dry burning. Some cotton fibre may have been trapped between the coils and when you dry burn...,ashes.
Don't just rinse the head after dry burning. Get a bowl of water, hold the base of the head and tap the head in the bowl of water. You'll probably see some ashes in the bowl. If you just use running water to rinse, the ashes may still be trapped between the coils. Hence the need to tap the head.
The burnt taste may also occur if the rubber grommet is scorched. Hence, when you dry burn, do not fire for too long. The coils can take the heat, but the grommet can't. The burnt taste if this happens is a rubbery smell.
