For strength:
3mg = 0.3%
9mg = 0.9%
12mg = 1.2%
18mg = 1.8%
etc.

Some companies use % while other use mg, so the conversion is good to know, and simple.

Notice how the decimal point moves over one place in the conversion (either way). No need for math.

I agree with Bronze that you should try 12mg (aka 1.2%) strength if you think 9mg (aka 0.9%) isn't doing it for you and 18mg (aka 1.8%) was too strong for you.

If you can't find 12mg (aka 1.2%) strength in your chosen brand/flavor, you can always buy one 10ml bottle each of the 18mg (aka 1.8%) and the 9mg (aka 0.9%) then mix them together in a larger bottle to get 13.5mg (aka 1.35%) strength, which is close enough to 12mg (aka 1.2%).

Personally, as an example, I vape about 10-12ml of 6-8mg (aka 0.6-0.8%) strength per day (I used to use 12mg (aka 1.2%) up until a few months ago).

Lots of people on this forum vape a lot more juice than 10ml per day, however most of those people probably use a much lower strength than me.

How much is too much for you? You just have to experiment.

When you see the strength listed as "9mg", that means
9 milligrams of nicotine per 1 milliliter (also written as "9mg/ml").
That means every 1 milliliter (ml) of liquid contains 9 milligrams (mg) of nicotine.

Therefore, for 9mg (aka 0.9%) strength juice...
  • 10ml of juice will contain 90mg of nicotine in total
  • 20ml of juice will contain 180mg of nicotine in total
  • 30ml of juice will contain 270mg of nicotine in total
  • 50ml of juice will contain 450mg of nicotine in total
  • 100ml of juice will contain 900mg of nicotine in total
  • etc.
BTW: The fact that your bottle says is 0.8% strength (aka 8mg) but then goes on to say 9mg is false and confusing. Disregard the 0.8% and assume that what you have is 0.9% (aka 9mg) strength. That makes 90mg of nicotine for the whole 10ml bottle.

If none of this makes sense, reread it and reread it again.
Wow thank you so my 10ml bottle has 90ml of nicotine in?

Yes. If you vape the whole bottle, that means you consumed 90mg of nicotine.

Is that "too much". I don't believe anyone on this forum can really answer that as no one seems to know what "too much" is and it will vary from one person to the next if they will feel a little sick from that. For me? No issues. But I have gotten sick from vaping just a half a ml of 24mg a long time ago. but for all i know there could have been something wrong with the juice or it was much stronger than 24mg (meaning the label was wrong).

Would you say a 10ml bottle containing 90ml of nicotine is like smoking 9 cigarettes? Or can you not compare on that?

So if I smoke half a bottle
If you're off cigarettes entirely, you don't smoke anymore. Cool, huh?
I started on the 18ml nicotine and after about 3 days started ri feel unwell so went down to the 9ml but don’t think the 9ml is working think I need to go back up to the 18ml
i smoked about the same amount daily as you and 6 mg/ml works well for me except early morning or after a long while being unable to vape; then i use 12 or 18. Everyone's different but you might consider that you don't have to always vape the same nicotine stength.
I’m so confused now
Yeah. There's a learning curve but it's really not all that complicated once you get the hang of a few things. Don't get discouraged. A lot of the folks here are very nice & helpful, too.
9ml nicotine
Nicotine concentration is specified in mg = milligrams, so...
90ml that seems like a awful lot of nicotine
Figure maybe 6mg nicotine in a light cigarette, times 15/day = 90mg inhaled/day. 90mg isn't so much. And your body isn't actually absorbing all the nicotine in the e-liquid. Besides, nicotine itself isn't harmful in the concentrations people get from vaping or smoking. Don't drink the bottle and you'll be fine. :)

I’m so confused with it all now
Pause a second. You’re asking if a 10ml bottle is like vaping 90ml of nicotine. That makes no sense so it’s hard to figure out what you’re asking. How can you vape 90ml when your bottle is only 10ml? You’re vaping more than your bottle contains. That’s impossible. I have no doubt you know what you’re asking but I’m not sure what you’re asking.

I’ve been vaping for about 12 days I started on the 18ml nicotine and after about 3 days started ri feel unwell so went down to the 9ml but don’t think the 9ml is working think I need to go back up to the 18ml and maybe I was feeling unwell from the lack of nicotine from smoking in general ‍♀️ It’s all so confusing

You feeling unwell could be due to 2 reasons:

-Not smoking-
Yes even if you sub vaping for smoking you still going to get some symptoms from not smoking anymore.
Even thou your ''nicotine'' needs are met you will still need a period to get accustomed to vaping.

-18ml maybe to much nicotine-
18 ml nicotine may have been to much hence you feeling unwell.

Not sure where you are located (top right of the screen,click on your name,then personal details and put in your country,helps us to give you advice since some countries going on a vape ban spree) but if you have the chance go to a vape shop.

Get yourself whatever bottle of e-liquid you like and buy 2 of them,one with lower nic,let's say the 9ml you were with at the end,then another bottle with the 12ml or 14ml.

Start with the 9ml and give it time,if you still ''crave'' a cigarette after vaping then up switch bottles and see how it goes.

Hard to say how one reacts when they stop smoking and switch to vaping.
Everyone is different and we all smoked for one reason or another,for me it was 50/50,50 anxiety related and the other 50 was the craving of nicotine...so for me it was pretty easy to stop smoking.

In my case i started with a MTL device (Mouth to lung,less vapor...so kinda more like a real cigarette,keep vapor in mouth then down to your lungs) and 6ml of nicotine.

After a while i just went down to 3ml nicotine and i am fine with that,tried to go back to 6ml and it made a bit sick hehe.

Main objective is that you find your ''sweet spot'' nicotine wise so you don't ever touch a cigarette ever again.
After that well the sky is the limit,you can try several atomizers,mods etc etc but for now focus on getting the correct amount of nicotine you need to get thru the day.

Thank you so much this has explained it all I was trying to work out how many cigarettes roughly to how much nicotine I was vaping

I’m so confused now I thought my 10ml bottle only had 9ml nicotine in the whole bottom but it actually has 90ml that seems like a awful lot of nicotine if you vape half a bottle a day

It's Really Not.

Because (here comes a One Way Ticket to MORE Confusion - LOL) the way Nicotine Level of e-Liquids is Measured is by Total Nicotine per Milliliter. Whereas the way Nicotine is Measured in Regular Cigarettes is How Much Nicotine is Absorbed into the Average Person when they Smoke 1 Cigarette.

So if you Vaped 1/2 of your 10ml Bottle of 9mg/ml e-Liquid, you would consume 45mg of Nicotine. But you Don't Absorb it all. You maybe Absorb 25 ~ 40% depending on what type of Hardware you use.

So by Regular Cigarette Standards, you would be Absorbing about 11 ~ 18mg of Nicotine. And that's pretty much inline with someone who Smokes about 8 ~ 12 or so Regular Cigarettes per day.

But Here's the Thing... It Isn't so much the Nicotine that Makes Cigarettes Harmful. It's the Tar and the Cornucopia of Chemicals that are Formed when Tobacco is Burned. That and all those Wonderful other Chemicals that Cigarette Makers put into Tobacco and the Paper.

So I Wouldn't worry about Vaping 5ml's of 9mg/ml per Day If that's what it Takes to Not Smoke Cigarettes.

Thank you so much, I’m begging to understand it all now yes I think I have been feeling unwell due to not smoking cigarettes I have smoked for 24 years at 15 a day, I’ve been reading all these post on the internet about how good people have felt after giving up and I don’t feel great at all if anything the opposite, it’s hard to tell if I’m smoking to much as I get dizzy spells anyway and suffer anxiety, just wanted to check I wasn’t smoking to much. I am in the UK and all our vape shops are shut as we are in lockdown at the moment :( as soon as they open I will pop into one.

You're getting caught up on large #s thinking that big # = too much.

Let me ask you this, do you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, how many milliGRAMS of nicotine one of your preferred brand of cigarettes has in one cigarette?

Small advice?
Forget about the numbers,don't try to calculate and sub the 15 cigs you had a day to whatever you vape now.
Dropped the cigarettes? awesome,that is the best and hardest part.now it's just a matter of time to find whatever amount of nic or device is more suited to your needs.

So forget about the numbers,percentages and cig to vape ratio it will just stress you out,for now just try to get thru the day without a cigarette...each day without one is an acomplishment in it's own right.

I was a 1 and half to sometimes 2 pack smoker a day since i was 19 (45 now),this last november was my 2 year anniversary vaping wise,haven't had a cigarette since.

Trust me it is worth it,just get your nicotine dosage right for now and that will do,got more than enough time to delve into the more complex side of vaping in the future.
