I know cartos are cheap but this is good for when they aren't available. I got this idea from another post where someone was talking about cleaning a carto, so if that person sees this please take credit. I used tweezers to remove the material from a kr8 carto. This left the heating element and wick sticking up in the carto. I tried to be as careful as possible but it took a lot of twisting and pulling to get the material out and one carto had a mangled looking heating element. I straightened it up and it worked fine. For the new cart material, I took a Lipton PTB and folded it longways down the middle. I took a regular drinking straw and slid it over the heating element and to the bottom of the carto. I then wound the PTB around the straw and slid the PTB down the straw and started it into the carto. I took a larger straw (the big red ones that come with slurpes I think) and slid it over the smaller straw and used it to slide the PTB to the bottom of the carto. Remove both straws. I then filled the carto with juice (I used a syringe) and let it soak the ptb. I removed the excess juice. When the PTB is initially put in, it lies tight to the sides of the carto, but the juice will make it swell and fill all the voids. Today, when I was removing the o-ring to fill the carto, I caught the PTB with my tweezers and it pulled out. It slid back in easily. This might be a good thing for washing periodically. This mod doesn't hold quite as much as an original carto (carto lasted me a little over an hour). One of the cartos had the wicking material around the element chared, and even it saw a lot of improvement.
