Hello all. I'm looking for a little feedback and advice as a vaper new to rebuildables. I recently purchased a Digiflavor Siren 25 and have been having some issues with it. It tends to pop once very hard when I first start to pull on it and I've noticed a little bit of juice making it's way into the drip tip and into my mouth. Looking threw the glass section of the chamber, it looks like there is quite a bit of juice sitting on the deck. I've also had very slight leaking out the AFC ring. When first vaping the tank after rewicking, the flavor is great, but after at tank refill, I tend to notice a slight burnt taste. I'm also finding that it's going threw juice like there's no tomorrow.

I have a 3.0mm, 26g, kanthal, 6 wrap, spaced coil at 0.8 ohms in it and I've tried vaping at 18-22 watts. I've tried rewicking with more or less Japanese cotton and have found similar results. I have my wicks running about 3/4 of the way down into the tank, not quite touching bottom. I've been vaping on the smallest and second smallest air holes.

I also have a Kayfun V5 clone and have had similar issues with it. With it I have been running the same coils as above but at 2.5mm and 0.7ish ohms. Again, I've tried wicking with more or less cotton but still get the popping / flooding issues.

I like a loose MTL draw and probably pull harder then most. Before the RTA's I have been using a Joyetech Cubis Pro tank and Joyetech eGo AIO's with the SS MTL 0.6 ohm coils. I vape at 23 watts with two air holes open on the Cubis tank and vape the AIO's wide open.

Let's talk about the popping, as that is IMO an issue that is pretty much the same with all atomizers when using cotton. I've found that when I put less cotton into my coil the pooping as you describe it becomes more aggressive.

I know you said "I've tried rewicking with more or less Japanese cotton and have found similar results. I have my wicks running about 3/4 of the way down into the tank, not quite touching bottom."

I'm referring to how much cotton is stuffed inside the coil, in other words how tight the cotton wick is in the coil.

I've found the tighter the wick in the coil the less popping I get, within reason. That doesn't mean I never get any popping ... a new wick in a clean coil always pops a bit for me at 20'ish watts, and that means everything is good, and I'm happy with that. But if my wick is really loose in the coil it gets loud. That can still be a good vape, but it's definitely loud :)

Totally agree.
Popping comes from ejuice that is sitting on top of coil that did not get absorbed into the cotton. Need more cotton.

Hey, thanks for the replies. I've read that, when wicking, the cotton should fit tightly through the coil, but not so tight that it deforms to coil as you pull it through. I've also read that with this type of cotton pad you should use ≈2.5 times the cotton in millimeters as compared to the ID of the coil. I've tried to adhere to that as closely as possible and then deviate slightly one way and the other to see if the issue improves. Next time I rewick, I'll cram as much as possible in there and see how it fairs. I'd love to post a picture of my build for critiquing, but can't figure out a way to expose the deck on the Siren without draining the tank.

Hi Plan B & welcome
Popping & sizzling are pretty normal and most of us just get used to it. In my mind though they are two different things and are caused by different circumstances and here I have to disagree with S&S on the popping.

The only physical explanation that I can surmise for such a loud popping noise is the quick release of compressed gas, and there is only one place in an atty that gas can be trapped and compressed and that is inside the coil and being trapped there by the wick. The heat of the coil creates the gas bubble and raises its pressure until it can escape the wick in an explosive popping.

The tightness of the wick would definitely influence this process but whether it should be looser or tighter is something that needs to be experimented with to tell so Rayedan may well be correct in saying that making it tighter would reduce the occurrence. The size, type, and length of the coil itself would impact it too and possibly even the juice.

Sizzling is most likely too much juice and/or too low a power and it is most likely caused by the juice boiling on the metal coil's surface. At least that's my best guess.

I've never noticed a correlation in popping and sizzling with the power setting but I could envision this also having an impact so who knows.

Getting juice up the drip tip to your lips and mouth is undoubtedly also related to the sizzling and popping but would also be impacted by the size and shape of the atty itself plus the force fullness of your draws. I get a lot more noise and juice from the smaller atty's than I do from the full size ones. It's simply a case of how close to the coil your mouth is and how well can the airflow carry drops of juice up the chimney.

Keep playing with your coils and wicks and if you come to any conclusions as to how to minimize the problem come back and let us know as I suspect we'd all be interested in it.
