Its a great atomizer once you get the build right. Dialed mine in on the second try. But it took me almost a dozen builds to get my kayfun working properly so I can really sympathize with your problem. I got so angry having heard so much about how a kayfun was better than a clearomizer and I couldn't get a build to even be on par with an Aerotank. Perhaps luckily I got the V4.3 (per this threads definition, the one with the big deck) which is most happy with kayfun type builds so after my first build with cotton, I joined the rayon revolution and the second wicking of my initial build was great. I felt like I felt after I'd gotten that Kayfun build correct. It was a so this is what they're all talking about moment. So just stick with it, I'm sure you'll get there.I don't wanna know how many builds it took to get to that!
I have the large deck and wick like a Kayfun, nothing in the channel just over it. Otherwise my builds look much like what the kiwi shows with the exception that I use noticeably less rayon...I also have been coiling my wicks with rayon the same way @thekiwi is and I'm not noticing a whole lot of difference compared to cotton. It's definitely smoother and haven't had a dry hit, but the flavor and vapor seem to be on par. I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong here. The other thing I noticed is that with rayon, my juice lasts longer than with cotton. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around. Guess there's a bit more trial and error to be had with it. I think I put too much rayon the first go around.
My gut reaction to what you're saying is that you've got too much wick. It really should go faster because rayon does wick better and you should notice at least either an increase in the wetness of the vapor or flavor.
The one thing I've found from my switch from cotton to rayon, may not apply to you, is that rayon is so good at wicking it works so well that when you get it wrong you may not realize it. If the density is so high that the center of the coil ends up not getting any juice from the wick inside the coil just the shoulders and the wick at the outside edges will keep the coil wet enough to prevent dry hits. You won't get the moistness, flavor or vapor of doing it right but you'll get something akin to what you were getting with cotton. So if you're not really seeing a difference try reducing the amount you use. Another clue to too high a density is gunk. There's no way, with perhaps the exception of a NET, that after a tankful the wick would be extremely dirty, let alone needing a dry burn. So check on it after the initial tank and if you see a lot of dirt or gunk know you've used too much.
