Shortage of pertinent information. “Vape pen” could mean almost anything, device type wise, considering the source. The serial number on the battery could tell if the device was a counterfeit or not perhaps. I can’t think of a reason for a new device to explode like that no matter how badly treated though unless it was defective.
The Asthma thing is weird. Could it have been a “special materials” device? They are often much more poorly made and frequently completely sealed.
The battery lawsuit is a weird tack on. Some idiot obviously carrying unprotected batteries in his pocket. No pertinence to the origional story.

Noticed it was posted by a “new member”. There are only two posts by this person almost a year apart. The other post appears to be an article about the battery lawsuit tacked on to the other story. E-Cig explodes in man's pocket, he's suing the shop. Will he win?
I read only a few comments from that thread. The word “clickbait” was used by several commentators.

"A store employee who witnessed the death said the vaporizer was not purchased at the store. He said authorities had instructed him not to talk about details of the death."

That sounds suspect.
Not seeing that detail in the OP. I didn’t pay the $0.99 for the full story though. This directly contradicts the claim of the grandmother and makes the claims made in the story almost completely valueless.
Are you looking at another version of the event or did they hide the “this is actually mostly crap” behind the paywall?

With this sort of news story I pull up everything on google I can find about it and see if I can find discrepancies or more information. Ghoulish as it may sound, I sometimes even check out fb, twter and other social media accounts.

The article mentioned "He was also burned on about 80 percent of his body", I'm not sure how that could be possible?

Different person. They tacked on another death that happened that happened in Florida in May of last year.

This story appears to be getting a lot of traction. Seen versions in several major sites.

The most recent one I saw was here. No idea if the link will work or not.
Deadly vape explosion highlights safety gaps — The Verge

The article seems to me to be primarily focused on non vented mechanical mods and their lack of safety features.

One of the more interesting links to me in the article was to an FDA publication on how to prevent battery accidents which pretty much jibes with information on this site.
Tips to Help Avoid "Vape" Battery Explosions

What is a mech mod?
More or less, a mod without any electronics in it. Basically just a battery holder with electrical contacts. Such mods are usually fairly old, though there are a few still made. They have a lot of safety and control issues. To use one safely requires a certain amount of electrical knowledge and common sense. The issue in this case is apparently that Some of the older ones are also unventilated. This means they screw together with no holes in the case to release pressure if the battery outgasses. Such mods can build up internal pressure and explode more or less like a pipe bomb. They are generally considered unsafe to use at all by the general vaping community.

They still remain attractive to some users though because they tend to be sleek and small while still delivering a lot of vaping power. I’ve still got a couple I think but I stopped using them years ago.
